Today I received a MacBook Retina from Apple.
It's a great machine. But three keys (f, m and 7) only barely work. You have to press them exactly in the middle otherwise no input will be recorded.
That is not acceptable for me and the Mac will be returned for a refund. :(

That sucks. Always disappointing when you receive something with a defect.

I'm not sure why you wouldn't just get it replaced/repaired. Or is there some other reason you've discovered it doesn't fit your needs?

that was the case for me as well, defective keyboard and an apple that's also a lemon.

The biggest concern for me is the keyboard. I've played a lot with the Macbook in the AS and I really don't get along with the new keyboard.
I'm pretty sure I'd get used to it after a couple of days, but you never know...

I wonder what everyone's typing scenarios are - I write a lot with my Air on my lap but am considering the Macbook in the summer - is the keyboard best when at a desk or when slouched on the sofa?

It's fine in both scenarios. It has a stable base and large palmrests. One the couch the lack of damping behind the keyboard is probably a bit less apparent.

I hope people are not disappointed when the new macbook pro have the same keyboard. After all this is the future of computers as apple has pointed. out.

the bad: the keyboard: I read a lot about the butterfly keyboard. tried it at the apple store. didn't like it, but was confident I'll get used to it, so bought the machine last week.

The keyboard is great once you get used to it. You need to give it more time. What's that they say about breaking up with a girlfriend? That it takes 50% of the time you were together to get over her? It's like that. But not quite as long.

Yeah, I guess the new keyboard will make its way into the new rMBP this year. They'll be able to shrink it a little bit more this way, of course as long as it has the old USB port it can't get too thin, but that's the future of Apple's laptops.

No, it's just all about that keyboard. I could live with it when all the keys worked perfectly. I guess there's too little manufacturing tolerance allowed this new design. I also have durability concerns. So I will wait for the next iteration.
Until then my newly purchased entry level MacBook Pro 13" will do fine. Although not equipped with the latest generation processor it's a very well engineered device with the same quality of display.

They may also improve it in version 2.

I'm not going to write it off if it makes it into the new Macbook Pros, but i'll certainly be re-testing it before committing.

Who knew that so many people were so 'into' a particular style of keyboard.

I have been using computers since the BBC Micro when I was a kid. I never really thought about key travel when I used that back then and I don't really think about key travel now when I'm typing on the MB.

Humans have an uncanny ability of not liking change. Men in particular hate change.

I wonder if the so called problems with the MB keyboard aren't just men holding other men back with there stereotypical lack of accepting change and instead ruining any chance for the rest of the population to enjoy something new.

Just a thought.

I really love the keyboard! It is very easy to write on, just don't slam down your finger onto the key, it is not required. I rather write like a butterfly that is hopping from flower to flower, just much faster. I found it actually less straining than writing on my MBA and that keyboard is already great.

The keyboard is really polarizing.

My girlfriend got the rMB. We both love the portability, the screen, the speakers, and even the performance is flawless. However, the keyboard... she LOVES it and I HATE it.

That's completely opposite of my experience. This is my favorite keyboard in all of the laptops I've ever owned. I bought the MB because of the keyboard. I type faster and more accurately with it than my MBA. The low travel is one of my favorite features because it is less response time than the mushy MBA. Feels more precise. Obviously, just my opinion.

Sorry, but you musta got a lemon, mine has had zero issues. It's been exactly what I expected it to be. Never had the flashing folder issue. Further proof yours was a lemon.

Wow this sure sounds like a bad experience - Very sorry to hear!

I'm a user of the MacBook and have been since early December 2015 and my God this little baby has been good. It's my sixth Mac over the course of 11 years and this has been the best in my experience - The speed of the machine including the SSD speed is great for my use and it's just a perfect size and build quality.

But mate - do yourself a favor and check a new one - I haven't had a single issue with the ?-folder and LOVE the keyboard - seriously the best and most speedy I've used. My non-retina-MBP feels like it has massive tall keys now.

I gave up after a few days, vented here and got talked into giving it another try. I put in the time and really worked at getting used to the keyboard. And this morning I booted with Command R and reformatted so I can return. The keyboard is a dog. It's not just hard to type on and prone to frequent errors, it makes my fingers hurt. It's a keyboard for two finger tappers, not for people who can actually type.

As a touch typist (with all my fingers) who is happy with the rMB keyboard, I call BS.

It's perfectly fine if the keyboard isn't suitable for you, but don't be so myopic as to make such such a patently bogus claim. That smacks of the poor workman blaming his tools.

Lmao, no. So the keyboard isn't for you, doesn't mean it's for the people who can't type properly.

I like the keyboard, I got used to it pretty much instantly.

I am also a touch typist (since 1980), and I absolutely love the rMB keyboard. My favorite keyboard of all time.

I have the rMB (2015) and this is indeed the worst thing about it. I never got used to it. Also to me, either I hammer the keys, or sometimes a keystroke is not registered. I recently got Apple Smart Keyboard for the iPad Pro, and I much prefer that, even if the keys are more like rubber!

But the other features of the rMB makes me accept the downside of the keyboard.

Now here we have a cogent assessment.

My only suggestion is try another unit in-store or something, just to verify that you don't have a defective keyboard.
