Can someone shed some light on this topic for me? I have been reading a few pages of this thread and I can't seem to figure this out all by myself. In a few months I'm going to buy a MacBook Air via the Apple Online Store as I want to get the 13'' model with 8GB and 256 SDD. Lets say my Mac arrives and I see the display is manufactured by LG, am I able to return it to Apple just by saying that the display isn't as great as the Samsung one? Do they accept that as a "reason" to exchange it? Do I have to do that on the Apple Store or do I have to talk to the guys at the Online store? Thanks in advance.
You can just say you don't like it and want to return it, as long as it's within 14 days of the purchase date. I returned mine without any problems.

At least in the U.S. you don't need a reason to return a computer within 14 days but the replacement might have the same kind of display.

Interestingly, my second MBA, this time i7/8/512 is shipping out of SPARTANBURG, SC. There isn't even an Apple store in Spartanburg, SC. I thought all of the custom order originated in China.

Edit...this is just the $100 Apple card, not my MBA.

Thanks to you both. Yes, the time you have to return it is quite similar here in France. It's a pity they are using two different manufacturers with two different 'quality' for the display, something that is very important. I wouldn't care so much if it was the SDD or other component. I think it's no coincidence that all MBA on display at the Apple Store are using Samsung's displays...

If my second MBA has the same issue I'm going to see about getting it properly calibrated. If it still looks weak compared to the Samsung, I'll know for myself that the LG panel is sub-par.

I have an Apple rep following me on this one. I think it's important for Apple to know about this, because it's possible that the LG screens are simply being issued with poor calibration. If that's the case perhaps the whole issue can be corrected prior to the point of assembly.

I got a Samsung display and it looks much better after I calibrated it with my i1 Display Pro. If you can get a calibration tool, I would highly recommend calibrating the display no matter who the manufacturer is.

I ordered a Spyder4 Pro today. I had my plasma TV professionally calibrated and remember what a difference that made. Figure it can't hurt trying on my MBA.

It should be quite noticeable and if you have an external monitor, it will benefit from proper calibration, too.

And the same was true of my LG display (similar colorimeter - i1 Display 2). The default calibration was seriously funky.

13" 2.0GHz i7/8GB/512GB SDD

LG screen :(
Samsung HD

Seems like every screen with this configuration I have seen so far is LG. I haven't calibrated it yet, but it seems like the screen needs to be titled just right or you can see a brightness gradient from center to edge...

I objectively sat back and looked at the display, and it looked fine. I noticed the resolution increase over my MPB as the screen is smaller with equal pixel count. Also I ran blackmagic and I was getting 430 read/ 240 write.

I have the toshiba SSD and LG Panel. :(

But my advice is to check and see if you can deal with what you have BEFORE you benchmark it. Because I already decided that I'm okay so it hurts less...

"Less" :)

Is anyone getting a BTO i7/8/256 that has a Samsung display? I have a stock i5/4/256 that has Samsung display and SSD. The wife wants one too, so I was thinking of giving her mine and going the BTO route. But not if I have no chance of getting a Samsung screen.

I got the i7/8/256 with both Samsung display and SSD. Good luck playing the lottery. :)

My stock i5/4gb/256gb had a samsung. I ordered a i7/8gb/256gb and that one had a LG. I am going to return it and play the lottery again.

If you will return more than 3 times directly to apple, they will flag your address, name and CC info - then, you can say goodbye ordering anything from Apple again.

In how long? I have returned at least 3 in my lifetime. And I'm sure I'm not flagged.

Ya a couple weeks ago when I returned my MBA for having a recessed trackpad on the right side (much lower than left) I tried to explain the trackpad situation. The guy didn't even bother to listen to why I was returning and just said it doesn't matter you don't need a reason to return it. It was kind of rude but whatever. At least I don't have to explain myself if my next air doesn't have a samsung display since my first one did.

That seems wrong, both ethically and factually. On the former, how is it the customers fault if she ends up with three defective products? On the latter, there was a guy in the iPad forum who returned more than 10 iPad 3's because they had irregular backlights, coloring issues, or bleeding. He showed photos in the forum to evidence these issues. I doubt that he got flagged. Can you give some more background information on why you think this policy exists? I know that Amazon kicks out customers when they return too much.

Well, it won't cost you anything if you'll try it except for holding charges on your CC, so try it and tell us what happens. 3 returns in a row (not in a lifetime) without any good reason with the same Apple ID. First time they won't ask you anything, second time they probably will, third time they will ask for sure. Every big company is doing it: Office Depot, Staples, Best Buy, Amazon, B&H, and I can continue forever.
If you want to return 500 times, then use different Apple ID (at least).

I'm familiar with the Apple lottery. You wouldn't believe the number of iPad 3s that I went through before I finally found one without a screwed up screen. My luck seldom works well enough that I get an MBA with a good screen and a good SSD. The chances of me actually having it happen again are pretty slim. But at least I can run right down to the Apple store and return it if I don't like it. I'll end up with a stock with 256GB, but at least the screen is easy on the eyes.

Lol at this BS. I've made more than 3 returns of the same product in the same week and never had an issue.

My MBA arrives in 2 days and this thread now has me worried.

Obviously, I am hoping for the Samsung screen. TBH, I think its just what ever lot of screens get sent to the manufacturer. No rhyme or reason to it. However, there is a clear difference it seems between the panels. Very disappointing to hear.

I'm new to the MAC OSX system and this is my first experience with a MAC computer. Not happy to hear of such inconsistent quality control of their screens.

Anyway, I ordered the 13" 128/8GB MBA

When it arrives, I will post with details of panel and drive.
