Wow. The exact same Applications that I run. What's the specifications and the year?

Exactly the same scenario here. I'm a freelance writer. The iMac is my main machine because the large screen is more convenient for writing. I use the MBA in the evenings when I'm in the family room with my wife and need to get caught up on writing.

I also have a first-gen iPad, which for two years I struggled to make work as a laptop. Hence the MBA. I still use the iPad for checking email, browsing and ham radio stuff.

To me, an iPad cannot function as a permanent replacement for the laptop, though it is a very good substitute.

I did have an ultimate 2011 but it was a lemon and apple gave me this baby after my 7th visit for a sticky keyboard and my 2nd visit for a broken trackpad

while its good performance gain the 2011 was capable for what I needed

might I ask what field are you in?

I don't see the point of getting the Maxed out 2012 MacBook Air if there's the MacBook Pro Retina, which is more suitable for your activities.

Well heres the thing....... I bought the Macbook Air last year so I could use it to bring to meetings and client presentations because I hated carting around my old Macbook Pro. So I bought it from Best Buy as an open box computer and got it for like 1500, it was the top end air of 2011 so I thought it was a good deal but it was having issues and well apple ended up about 3 weeks ago. They replaced it with the top end model of 2012 so I didn't spend 2200 for it, that would be a waste as I would have just gone for the retina.

Also at home I use a Mac Pro so the Air isn't really my workhorse computer but it is really capable, as I have done a couple of things on it that were large scale 50+ megabyte Photoshop/Illustrator some big SketchUp work occasionally some Rhino or AutoCAD files. Even though it doesn't have dedicated graphics card or a quad core it still gets the job done nicely especially with the ssd.

I like the speed so much that occasionally I will just work on the Air and bring the file over to the Mac Pro to let it all render out.

I use mine for:

Coding (iOS apps)
Little bit of webdesign
Occasional games, like WoW and Diablo 3
Internet browsing, iWork stuff and iPhoto.
Virtual Machines, for work related stuff

My MBA is the 13,3" i5/8GB/256GB

I am a copywriter, so I use it for writing online articles. Programs I use: iA Writer, Sparrow, iTunes, Skype, Marked, Skitch, Pages, Dropbox. Nothing special at all so I didn't get, and couldn't for complicated reasons anyway, the 8GB RAM. I won't keep this too long anyway, maybe 2 years and I will upgrade. I decided to upgrade every "tock generation" if I can.

goofing off:
Google chrome/firefox
Photoshop/xdarwin/inkscape
windows 8 (haha, just kidding)
random goofing off with other OSes too

fixing stuff

Programming:
xcode
motodev studio
textwrangler
eclipse
whatever else

Playing games:
Dofus
need for speed
trackmania
team fortress 2
portal/portal 2 (haven't gotten 2 yet)

Slicing assorted food. (lol jk)

Basically, all kinds of stuff - but when I'm sitting at a table I usually use my G5. Unless I'm not home, then I use my macbook air there, too!

This little machine is pretty darn powerful and ridiculously underrated. However, I would like more than 4gb ram/128gb hd space!

More like what can't you do with a 2012 MacBook Air? It handles anything and everything you can throw at it. :)

Gaming (Diablo 3, SC 2, Half-Life), porn, numbers, word, youtube, this, tweetbot, mail, safari, itunes, hd videos (movies, series), netflix, transmission.

I had the 2011 ultimate, now with the 2012 'affordable' ultimate (256gb, as 500 dollars for 512 seems like an insult), could NOT be happier.

Well when you think about it its not crazy, I mean what is a i7 8GB Air equilvant to in terms of past Macbook Pro or Mac Pro? People were doing "pro" work in 2005 with top of the line Mac Pro's. In 5 years its going to be crazy what ultra laptops are going to be capable of. Obviously the software keeps requiring more from the hardware but its still amazing what the specs are on an Air today compared to anything on the market not that long ago.

I mean a film like Cold Mountain was edited with G4s(Obviously theres more to it that just the computer G4 hardware but still)

I hate it when the fans kick on on the Macbook Air for things like Aperture, Gaming, and Video encoding. Going back to a Mac desktop next time since those handle heat better.

It doesn't matter what Mac you have, the fans will be running from the moment you power it on. It's is a very good thing, it keeps them cool and from over heating.

What I use my Air for...

For handbrake, do you just use a USB DVD drive or just using another drive over your network?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just got ours a couple days ago. It's mostly for my fiance. She wants to start writing stories and likes using a laptop more than a desktop. I want to start learning to code iOS apps and I like to play Starcraft 2 (even if the settings are set to low).

I bought my air to replace my desktop computer. It's just fine! Does everything I need it to do.
