MacBook and MacBook Pro Disassembly and Photos

This is definitely a good start but we don't have this just yet without FireWire. ;)

And when I said it could be done with a special smart USB cable, I should point out that the article makes it clear that it would require a firmware update, which Apple has shown no intention of providing.

Do you think they're gonna merge the Macbook/Pros to simplify their product line to make way for a tablet or whatever?

If they wanted to, they just missed a great opportunity for it. ;) But no, they won't do that. They might call them by only one name but they will keep an entry-level model differentiated from a higher-end model with a different price point.

Here's a article that claims it could be done with a special smart cable:

http://www.christopherprice.net/yes-usb-target-disk-mode-is-needed-badly-627.html

But if it eventually does come back, it might well be implemented with eSATA:

http://arstechnica.com/journals/apple.ars/2008/08/22/apple-aims-to-patent-target-disk-mode-for-esata

I read the first article and it really bugs me that people who should know better (or at least do a little research before they make a comment) keep repeating the line that consumers don't use or need firewire anymore. It's as if they think if you repeat something totally false enough times it will become true. Other than that, it sound like a possible solution to the target disk mode problem. That is if Apple has already decided that target disk mode is no longer needed.

Putting this in huge black caps so that it is not missed:

TARGET DISK MODE WORKS WITH USB, AND HAS SINCE 10.4

There are many reasons to bitch about Firewire being gone from the Macbook, but Target Disk is not one of them.

I'm going to ask this again.

You can boot a Mac into Target Disk Mode and mount the internal drive(s) on another Mac via USB?

WRONG

Notice no mention of USB on this page: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661

If target disk mode worked with USB, why were they forced to implement Migration Assistant using Ethernet or wifi for the Macbook Air? (Which is now what you have to use with the new Macbooks.)

Faster maybe?

No. The MBA uses an optional USB ethernet adapter that only supports 100 Mbps, which is the same speed as its 802.11n wifi. Both are significantly slower than USB 2.0 (theoretical speed of 480 Mbps, somewhat slower in practice but still way faster than the networks).
