AppleInsider pictures are great

Apart from this review
has anyone read another good reviews?

Me too wanna know - I tried google, but can't find any good review. How does new MacBook measure up against previous generation? Faster, cooler, quieter... ?

my uncle can load movies to his pc on usb, why can't mac. is there something i'm missing?

It's probably a flash-drive or hard-drive camera. In that case, it's just a data file and can be moved over any connection.

But for DV and HDV cameras that use tape, firewire is the only connection I've seen. If there is one that uses USB, it's rare. This is a camera issue, not something that can be changed with different software.

Anyway, I'm just guessing, but that's probably your uncle's deal.

But in the last 2 years I have convinced 7 people I know to switch from a PC to a Macbook. Not a single one of them will ever spend $2,000 on a laptop. And most of them have DV camcorders. What will they do when it's time to upgrade?

Are all of their DV camcorders FW only? Most DV camcorders support USB. You can still use your camera and transfer video to the MacBook. It may not be as elegant as FW and it may be slower but as long as your camera supports it, it should be OK.

On the plus side the built in H.264 encoder /decoder in the 9400M will greatly improve your video editing software.

Target Disk Mode?

No firewire? does this equal no target disk mode? it just came to mind and I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere.

:apple:Seriously... When the 13" was taken apart, was there ANY indication that Apple was intending to put Firewire on their Macbook?

It's not really proprietary. Displayport and Mini Display port are industry standards, it's just that it's so new so there's very little with these ports on them currently, which means you have to get adapters to connect to exisitng displays.

Having to get other cable adapters does suck, I agree.

------

As for the take apart pictures, I'm a bit surprised at the second cover over the battery. So you have the bottom piece of the case to remove. Then the battery cover. Isn't that just extra weight for no reason? At least 3rd party battery makers will have it easier, since they don't have to recreate the silver bottom on the battery to match the case.

Oy, industry standards! They don't even make a Mini-DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable! What so "standard" about it if only they use it, and you can't even connect to the thing that it is a smaller version of?

If you can't tell I have a Dell Ultrasharp 2408 WFP and I am a might bit bothered by the fact that I HAVE a DisplayPort but can't use it...

Not an expert, but I think the issue is that FW guarantees a continuous data transfer speed while USB does not. So overall transfer speed is not the big issue, rather that time-based data transferred by USB can turn out "jumpy."

I have been mentioning it for days. :( It's the only reason I really would like to have Firewire. Actually I backup all of my systems by booting them in target disk mode, except a central system that runs the backup.

they look absolutely great.

but how long till the first person complains about the front edge being to sharp on their wrists while typing?

anyway, i wonder how robust the glass panel is. the iphone is quite robust.

What's the quality of the internal speakers of the new Macbooks and Macbook Pros? In my opinion the Powerbook 1GHz had the loudest built-in speakers compared to the much more quieter Macbook Pros that followed. Do the new Macbooks and Macbook Pros sound any louder and better?

Hmm, I have both a 1Ghz Powerbook and 2.4Ghz Macbook Pro and the macbook Pro is distinctly better, not sure if your MBP speaker is playing up?

Apparently according to apc.com the speaker is better on the latest macbook. No bass still but definitely better.

I disagree. The black keyboard ruins it for me on the looks aspect. BTW I saw it in person also yesterday.
To each their own.

You may not prefer the black keys however, had they been white/silver keys, you'd be wanting black keys after all the fingerprint/oil/gunk starts darkening/fading those pearly whites.

I have the MacBook Air and I completely prefer the black keys for just that reason alone. And I'm a bit obsessive about keeping my hands clean too!

?

I've had a Macbook Pro since January 2007 and the silver keys look just fine, still. What are you basing this on?

I agree with the quality of the build, it's superb. I went with my girlfriend to pick up the 2.0Ghz one last night as she needed a new notebook because her old Dell from college died.

My only complaint so far is that the "4" number key doesn't depress quite right, as it seems there is an obstruction on the left side or the scissor mechanism isn't seated right. I'm gonna take a look at it and if it isn't just a seating issue, then I'm taking it back for her to get a new one...all the keys should work on a 12 hour old laptop. Does anyone know if they are able to be popped off like the aluminum keyboard and old macbook keys can be? I would guess they can be.

...

Take it back to the store! Don't mess with it.... don't try and fix it yourself..... don't even look at it too hard! This is your girl-friend's system, therefore there is a different "rules of physics" at work here.
1) A "little" tug will be amplified 15 fold
2) Static will jump gaps of up to a meter (or yard - depending on your location)
3) Liquids will spill sideways
4) Screws, despite you not even having a screwdriver in the room, will unseat themselves and lodge themselves in awkward places
5) Marginal quality chips will choose this moment to fail
6) Pixels will have their life-energy sucked out of them

In other words, all attempts to be helpful and "fix" your girl-friend's system will end up badly.

Take it to the store, get them to fix it, replace it, or whatever ...

Buy an adapter as a present for inconveniencing your girl-friend. Trust me on this one.

Good luck.

The sharper edges were noticeable for me when I bought my MacBook Air. It actually irked the heck out of me and my wrists for the first week. After that, until you brought up the subject, I had totally forgotten about it and the edges don't bother me one bit anymore. Either my wrist/skin adjusted to it or the edges became subtly smoother from the four months I've been using it.

Either way, I think the other manufacturers will be watching Apple closely on this upgrade. I think these are the best-designed notebooks around. Just the chassis sturdiness alone is a big win. My last laptop (Sony Vaio) finally fried and I really think it was due to all the flexing the plastic chassis had when I go from one client to another. My MBA is a wonderful piece of aluminum engineering. I just in awe as to how I can lift it with one hand and not have the case flex. Very well built.

NO, no, no!!! Most DV cameras do not support capture via USB! I've been a video professional for over twenty years and now teach it at the high school level. If a DV camera has firewire and USB, the USB is for still pic transfers only. And the junky cameras that use USB for transfer use proprietary software for capture and editing. They are hard disk drive or DVD cameras. You can't capture from them with FCE or FCP. And if you wanted to edit with those programs there is a conversion process. USB camcorders are consumer junk for people who never intend to edit their videos.
And the encoder/decoder won't improve your editing software

don't defend. tell them it is stupid and ridiculous. no need to sell yourself to get others to buy something that isn't going to work for them. apple had better find a way for the DV camcorders to work with USB 2 or there will be a lot of pissed off people out there. my uncle can load movies to his pc on usb, why can't mac. is there something i'm missing?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Apple sells a $999 notebook with FireWire for those who need it. People are not required to buy the more expensive aluminum version.

I'm basing this on the other MBP and MB's that I myself have used and with the units my colleagues and associates use. Some of them look pretty bad after a while. And it's just not a matter of hygiene per-se. It's just that those keys begin to look pretty worn-out after a lot of use and I think Apple decided on the black color to maintain a more cleaner look after using it for a couple years. When I look at my friends' older MBP's and see that keyboard all worn out and faded, the black color begins to look much more appealing.

Of course, every person is different and how they keep and maintain their keyboards and the amount it's used makes a huge difference. Notebooks take a beating. One never knows what stuff gets on their fingers. Just look at people at a Starbucks typing-away on their keyboards while wiping their fingers on their pants after munching away on a scone and latte. It racks up after a while!

Just an opinion. Nothing personal. ;)
