If were going Mini DisplayPort, why not include 2 on the monster chassis.

That would be cool. Although, seeing as DisplayPort is new and all, can you branch multiple displays from a single connection? I think you can. (Actually, Wikipedia is telling me that's a future feature. But hey, it's nice to know it's a possibility.)

Possibly a full keyboard with a number pad?

My personal feelings on this aside (I never use a number pad on a laptop), I don't think you'll ever see this purely from an aesthetic point of view.

I still don't understand why Apple couldn't have used the standard Display Port connector instead of creating this mini version.

Yeah, that bugged me. Although, I've never seen the actual DisplayPort size, so I dunno for sure. Weird that there's no mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort adapter.

Cutting Edge

This new machine is hot. I think this will be the way all laptops are built in ten years. The keys are great you guys, get over it. And Apple is not out to "get" anyone to do anything, I think the firewire thing is part of the reason they left the old models out, maybe until they could squeeze the port in. Who knows. I can't wait to get my hands on one. Probably won't be till after Jan tho...$

Apple is trying to differentiate the MacBook and MacBook Pro as much as possible.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Apple sells a $999 notebook with FireWire for those who need it. People are not required to buy the more expensive aluminum version.

but for how long? apple has gone the aluminum route, no indication they'll ever upgrade the plastic route, when they discontinue it, the MB line officiall doesnt' support firewire. just stupid.

Except that both the MB and MBP are using Mini DisplayPort and the new cinema displays use the mini version, not the full size. I think we're gonna see pretty much everything Apple using this in the near future. I have a feeling they made their own version because... well... Apple does that. They like the smaller form factor better and it makes it a hassle to use other products.

Don't get me wrong, I really liked every Apple computer I've owned (I even had a IIgs back in day before becoming a PC guy and then coming back) but I can't say that Apple's general business practices impress me. They really do have a habit of being douche bags.

Does anyone know if an old DVI to VGA adapter can be added to a new DisplayPort to DVI adapter? (Therefore providing DisplayPort to DVI when needed.)

I was ready to order a pair of 24" screens to replace my Alu 23" ones. Then i read the info on the new screens. There is no mention of compatibility with any Macs other than the newly announced ones.

I have a MacPro. I can see no way of connecting these displays to a Mac that does not have the DisplayPort. Maybe an adapter will be available sometime. For now, it seems that the new 24" screen is simply an add-on for notebooks.

I am going from this

http://www.displayport.org/brighter-future/VGA-Cable.htm

and to me it looks as though it would be about the right size to fit down the side of the macbook/pro

I was worried that was the case. I wouldn't be surprised if some design freak at Apple said, "I don't like the way the connector looks!" Or, Apple likes stuff to be their way for what seem to be entirely arbitrary reasons. I really don't know what's up, but it is annoying.

NO, no, no!!! Most DV cameras do not support capture via USB! I've been a video professional for over twenty years and now teach it at the high school level. If a DV camera has firewire and USB, the USB is for still pic transfers only. And the junky cameras that use USB for transfer use proprietary software for capture and editing. They are hard disk drive or DVD cameras. You can't capture from them with FCE or FCP. And if you wanted to edit with those programs there is a conversion process. USB camcorders are consumer junk for people who never intend to edit their videos.
And the encoder/decoder won't improve your editing software

Well I wasn't addressing Streaming video capture from a DV tape camera or live camera capture. I was commenting about the HDD type cameras where you are simply transferring DV to the MB.

Yes the improved Graphics chip and the new hardware encoder/decoders will speed up your video editing software. Apple claims a big performance boost for ilife, FCE, and Aperture. When Snow Leopard comes out the difference will be even more dramatic because Snow Leopard will be able to off load graphics calculations to the GPU.

I understand that losing FW on the MB is a big deal for video as it is heads and shoulders above USB. But I was merely stating that not all camcorders are useless. The new HDD or SSD video camcorders should be able to transfer stored video via USB with no problem. Here's a link to one that is a USB transfer HD Dv camcorder. I realize that it is a consumer model, not pro, but I thought that is what the person was talking about.

I don't see why not. I am actually going to ask this question to support when I visit the store later this PM. If there isn't a definitive answer for this by then I will submit my findings :) .

Yes, please do! :)

The structural rigidity of my new MBP is beyond words. I have never been able to pick up a laptop as big as this with one hand, and not see relatively noticeable chassis flex.

I am really impressed with it so far, no real complaints.

Rubbish.

I pick up may feb 2007 macbook pro with one hand, and the case certainly doesnt flex. Whilst these machines are no doubt better constructed, dont be fooled by the reality distortion field. This update was rank. No FW on the Macbook, and glossy Pro's are a huge letdown.

You do realize that MacBook is a year old and likely will be discontinued at some point (either when they run out of the model or can sell the new Firewire-less version cheaper to fit that pricepoint).

Designed in sexy California...you gotta admit, these are the best looking new laptops anywhere.

Its quite subjective really. I love my feb 2007 macbbook pro, but as I need an update, and am not tied to OSX, for the 1st time Im now looking at the gorgeous new Sony range and Lenovo. The new design of the macbook and pro (and their updated limitations) are a put off for sure for me. They look ugly and more PC like than your average dell.

However, as the new MacBook (and Pro) now have all of the components fixed to the top case, replacing a keyboard that has had your Dom Perignon spilt into it is now a major job. Every single component must be removed to do it. No matter how cheap the top case turns out to be, the labour costs will be high.

High labour costs are unlikely to worry someone who manages to spill Dom Perignon on their keyboard. ;)

I just checked out one of the new macbooks at Best Buy. Amazing build quality. Solid as a... brick. You would not know the trackpad is glass unless someone told you. Even the screen/lid is very rigid as well.

The more i think about it, the macbook is a bargain. This thing is basically a macbook pro with some terrific new features, like the trackpad. I know it has a slower processor, but the GPU gains may negate that. I think most people, especially switchers, could not care less about the lack of firewire. I know that no one has ever plugged anything into any of the firewire ports on any of our three mac laptops. Have not needed to.

I recently went shopping for a windows laptop (for someone else...) while comparing these windows laptops I was struck by how very u-g-l-y most of them are. Flimsy, creaky, festooned with stickers and more ports and gee-gaws than anyone could need. This was especially true of the cheap ones. Some of the more expensive ones were OK, but none were even close to the class and build quality I saw today.

Bravo Apple.

Oh look, the stock price is up to about $100 again...

Hmm, I have both a 1Ghz Powerbook and 2.4Ghz Macbook Pro and the macbook Pro is distinctly better, not sure if your MBP speaker is playing up?

Apparently according to apc.com the speaker is better on the latest macbook. No bass still but definitely better.

I have a Powerbook Ti 1GHz, and made an equaliser setting in iTunes to straighten the frequency reponse as much as possible. No deep bass, but a fair sound much like a good small radio. My sister owns a Macbook Pro (early 2007) and I find its frequency response much smaller. I tried to make an equaliser setting to compensate, but any fair setting reduces the sound volume significantly. Even tried plugins like VolumeLogic to push the volume up a bit.

Apple always says that music is important, and I agree, but I'm hoping that they put in much better speakers in their current/future Macs. I'm not asking for B&W speakers, but something really good would be a nice to have in a $2000 Macbook Pro or iMac

I also feel bad for all the FW hard drive users as well. Virtually EVERYONE in my college has a FW drive. My parents have them. It's so much waste. Seriously, how hard is it to include a FW port? Even a 4 pin port? Such a terrible move here. This isn't like the iPod going USB, it still worked with virtually every laptop. Apple reneged big time on their HD promise, BIG TIME.

Umm, I still don't understand how all the tech pros around here don't understand that you can just get a usb to firewire adapter???

I mean, I'm no expert, and sure maybe speed might be decreased (maybe not), but I don't see why the need to buy a $10 extra adapter is going to push tons of buyers over the edge...to Vista.

I think Apple's moved from computers that just worked to computers that follow new industry standards so that they work with most users. So to use everything ever (firewire, DVI, VGA......), you'll need a bunch of adapters, but most people don't. Therefore, it's ok to have a macbook with one adapter for firewire, one for display (low number of people actually use extra displays for notebooks)...

It's just like the lack of SD drives in some notebooks today. Do people yell and scream? Not really, if you really need it just buy an adapter/hub.

As for glossy, I just used both. In extremely bright lighting conditions like under sunlight, neither matte nor gloss allows visibility. In semi light areas(morning in the car with slight sunlight through window, roof of car covering you), gloss is definitely annoying, but I can barely see anything on the matte screen unless all is quiet and I pay attention (not a good working condition anyway).
Regular lighting situations at home, glossy just demolishes matte for regular users because it's so much more amazing.

I guess pro photographers need matte, but I think the seventeen inch might include that option later on.

NO VIDEO ADAPTER?

APPLE are you effing kidding me? It's proprietary, what a freaking nightmare. Buy buy $50 student discount...

This is not new. The last generation MacBook didn't come with a video cable either. Did the pros?? (I don't know since I got a MacBook.)

Hugh

I'm getting rather tired with all this Firewire moaning and moaning and moaning. Buy and adaptor for God's sake!
