they clearly just guessed at this..

Also, why the hell would they waste precious side real estate on an eject button that can easily be placed on the bottom of the case where the 1 person in a month would actually use it.

Furthermore, there is a good chance the battery is in the back. Why would they route a 1 foot long rod all the way to the back of the unit to eject a battery?

I think the battery is going in the front. If you look at the bottom, it looks like a nice place for the Battery on one side, and a hard drive on the other end. The rear of the laptop will consist of the Optical drive, and the main board and components.

Its obviously been said about a thousand times... but I just wanted to throw my "no firewire!? wtf!?" post in.

As someone who uses Firewire EVERY DAY, I really don't see Apple abandoning it. They invented it, and it is far superior to USB!

Well they're not abandoning it, they're just (supposedly) telling everyone that uses it to get a MBP

Differentiation

It looks like Firewire is a differentiation between "consumer" and "pro." This is interesting because the iMac just got Firewire 800 in the aluminum redesign (maybe the 24" white one had, I'm not sure).

That's incredible, thousands of posts about this mysterious port, and now it turns out it's just a battery eject button.....

About time they put 2 USB port side by side!

Some portable harddrives use a USB Y cable to provide power.

Now if only they put an SD card slot in, then I'll be in heaven.

If Apple were to do something like that patent I would very highly doubt it would be an iMac (why put a computer inside another computer?) but rather an Apple Cinema Display.

It's not really an iMac. Just casing that looks like it. Still have the same ports, Wireless, IR, extra hard drive and display. Lacking a Mother Board, Graphics, Ram...

Thus, it would reduce the overall cost of an iMac and bring it into line of where the Cinema Displays sell for.

lol I enjoy your signature iMacmatician, 'tis very obvious in the threads about the supposed cases. I still remain optimistic that FW is in the new MBs unless Steve Jobs says otherwise tomorrow (perhaps I'm a naive Apple fanboy? but I just don't think he'd do that to us)

I see so kind of a device that's in between a full blown iMac and an Apple Cinema Display?

Exactly. I think something like that would be a good fit for the LineUp. You could have a time machine and extra ports built right in and save a whole bunch of desk clutter. (But obviously not money... Hey, this is Apply we're talking about.)

the mystery port is a heat vent. that's why it's taped up. some heat exchange element will go in there. it's because the battery is on the backside where the heat vents used to be.

Oh great, so are you implying (like the initial macbooks), that someone could forget to remove the tape over the heat vent? well, considering the placement of the vent on the macbooks, I don't like having it right below the LCD. the LCD gets warm anyway and having the vent just blast more heat on it.....

They should make 50% of the bottom one big vent (would need to put feet on the laptop though), with fans bloing outward to keep the entire thing cool. My wife keeps telling me "get your mac off the table an on your pad so you don't ruin my table with that hot surface"...

My Targus pad does keep my machine running cooler...

Anyway, I think that hole is a little small for a vent. Unless they are putting in a new chipset and harddrive that runs cooler. Heat is also not just an apple thing, I have seen other articles with heat issues on PC laptops. just PC laptop have bigger vents.

By this time tomorrow, all of our questions will be answered. :D

Tell me about it...

Why would Apple throw out a port that most people use?

My prediction:

Ports from (right to left): Magsafe, Firewire, USB 1, USB 2, Video Out, Audio Jack, Headphones.

If I'm right, feel free to send me an iTunes Gift Card...

Isn't necessarily, some people think the round hole is for IR but I don't buy it, doesn't make any sense.

it does, as it's a ray of light.

I tried on my MBP where the current IR hole is near the latch of the machine. I can use my apple remote at the Magsafe port area pointing directly towards the back of the machine and it will work. So will it work when i point it anywhere around the machine. It does not need a direct line of sight. Although Apple recommends it. I can cover the the Infra Port on the MBP and the remote still will work I tried point the Apple Remote 2 meters 180 degree away from the machine - It still works.

I have done presentations where I do not even point at the machine to present..I just press the Menu button and most of the time it will work..and im facing the back of the monitor..holding the remote at any possible angle. It does not work 100% of the time, but most of the time it works...

Anyone with a MBP and Apple Remote that comes with it, you can try to verify this on your own.

It does not need a direct line of sight to work. Of course your mileage will be reduced if you do not point towards it. Putting the Infra Port at the side won't reduce the ability to receive the signal much.

Dude, even more people use Ethernet than Firewire (and in any case, it's rj45, like it or not, so either Ethernet or Ethernet+FW via FW-S800T)

Who wants children, right?

But seriously, I don't really have a problem with cooling on my MacBook Pro. Then again, I almost never encode or do serious video work when it's not plugged in an on my desk.

Did you even bother to read the symbols printed onto the case pictures? Its clearly the symbol Apple uses for Ethernet <-> not the FireWire Y...:apple::apple::rolleyes:

Cannot wait to get one of these babies! I hope they come on sale tomorrow and not in '2 weeks time'. :apple:

MB now has that, and that is how they have to do the ports because of it. It will be interesting to see if it goes all the way across like the rumors. Then it would be super easy to get at the ram and hdd.

Neither do I.

But it still gets really warm, like hot, when watching YouTube and alike.

Blimey this goes on and on! As if one thread wasn't enough :p

If the 'mystery' one is a battery latch, which was my suspicion from the beginning, I'm guessing the round hole will be something that needs to be pushed in to get the latch to operate. Kind of a safety feature. You don't want it ejecting in your bag, or some toddler ejecting the battery while you're working etc.

Also - Ethernet > Firewire, if I had to choose. Transferring stuff across a gigabit port "FTW".
