For one thing they reduced the resolution of the 15.4" models to only 1440x900 which is less than my work laptops at the same size and half the price. I don't see anything remotely 'Pro' about that.

I think they have always been at that resolution. You can get the 17" in either 1680x1050 or 1920x1200 but the 15.4" has always been at the resolution, unless you have one at a different res, but as far back as i remember its been 1440...and thats what mine is.

I'm really puzzled by the removal of the firewire port on the macbooks. I'm using a firewave with my current late 2007 macbook firewire port. That device converts my sound from stereo to 5.1 surround. I listen to a lot of music on my macbook and I would like to keep using that device to hook up my 5.1 surround speakers. Now with this new macbook I have to get a new speakerset with optical in... Apple made a big mistake if you ask me.

I don't know how Apple does it, but they are consistently able to produce products that make me drool and "want". I don't do that with anything else (OK, except camping gear); I'm not a materialistic kind of person.

Up until yesterday, I had no interest in getting a new laptop. Now, I'm drooling. I'll be waiting until Snow Leopard is released, but maybe then...

I suppose I do know how they do it - paying attention to the little details. It makes all the difference.

Avoid Apple Store Glasgow!

I went in early this morning to the Apple Store in Glasgow to buy the new MacBook. Opens at 9am and i was there at 9.50am. Walked up to one of the employees:

Me - "Hi, I would like to buy the new MacBook please."

Rep - "Um, have you booked a personal shopping session?"

Me - "No I just thought I would buy one seeing as I'm like the only guy here."

Rep - "Well we aren't selling them to just anyone, unless you have an appointment I can't sell you one."

Me - "Hang on, so you have them in stock?"

Rep - "Yeah, about 40 units."

Me - "So why can't I buy one, I've got cash on me now?"

Rep - "Cos we can't sell them to anyone like I said, I can book you an appointment for early next week"

Me - "Nah mate, just forget it. If you don't want my money I'll just go and buy a PC"

I've waited since June for a MacBook and to be treated like a piece of dirt by those guys is unforgivable. Thank you Apple for the iPhone but I won't be buying any more products from you if your gonna treat people like this!!:mad::mad::mad::mad:

I posted this on another thread, but had to post it again cos I'm so mad and people should know before being confronted with rude staff.

Same...I don't understand why people don't like it. :(

I like them, I think the uniformity among all their products is cool yet I would still like for the pro to be set apart with different color keys or something. I was honestly hoping for something really crazy for the MBP's though, like compactness either weight-wise or as far as size. A 12" or 12. something inch MBP would be great with the same power and design or at least shrink down some parts or something and slim it down cutting out the MBP's weight. Looks like I'll be sticking with my current MBP.:apple:

You're probably right about that, I have been cross-comparing so many specs recently for work and home purchase. However even the crappy Dells that we generally buy for work are 1680x1050 at 15.4" and it seems to work very well. 1440x900 is close to 1/3 less pixels and with a modest screen size like 15", it really matters for software development where you need to see a lot of different things at once. You do need good eyesight though because of the pixel density.

I just ordered the new MacBook Pro.
Yieeehah!

I'm really looking forward to toying around with the new trackpad, to do some fast Photoshopping, to push serious amounts of polygons out of those new GPUs, to watching DVDs on that beautiful screen, to have it in my hands and enjoy the new gorgeous design.

Thanks to Apple for finally doing someting else than iPods and phones. Would have hated to see the October 14th rumors slipping again. Next up: Snow Leopard :)

Yes, the details do matter and Apple is always thinking about the consumer in those regards. I hope they have a matte screen option, everyone says no but no one knows for sure yet.

Should have said "Can I book a personal shop please". WHen he asked when for. Just say "In 5 mins time please" :) I managed to book one at our Apple store for tonight.

tell me, what am i in for sitting outside the starbucks (yeah, i know) with a glossy screen??? will they really be glossy hear [sic] on out??? if so, i might feel better about buying now.
Outside? It's hard to see clearly, sometimes even impossible. I've had a laptop once that had a glossy screen. The most disturbing is the reflection, at it's worst when there is much black on your screen (like watching a film) or when the brightness is low (which is standard for me when not connected to a power adapter). I couldn't work at my desk properly (too much sunlight), so I returned it to the store. Then I bought one with a matte screen, and it was just perfect.

Last week I visited an Apple retailer and saw a MacBook and a MacBook Pro with a matte screen. There is a real difference between the two, mainly caused by the reflection. But I will see both of them myself in a few hours, then I decide if I can live with it.

By the way: here are some pictures. The last one let's you see how horrible a glossy screen can get. Isn't that disturbing? :(

Workaround for new Macbooks w/no firewire

I really want a 13" Macbook, I like the small size, but I absolutely need a firewire 400 port...so I thought of this and wanted to see if anybody thought it might work...

it's not too ideal, but what if you hooked an Apple Cinema Display (new ones with firewire ports on them) to the new macbook, and then hooked your firewire device to the display???
Will the new DisplayPort handle that?

Just a thought.

And maybe, they can make a cable that comes from the display port and goes to firewire 400???
That would be slick.

To all those of you who are complaining about the glossy screens:

Hold your breath for a couple of weeks, and you will watch a whole eco-system of 3rd-party suppliers offering "anti-glare matte film" with perfectly rounded corners for MacBooks, MacBook Pros and the new ACD.
Go buy one, apply it and enjoy your new wonderful piece of Apple hardware.

Now, could we move on, please.

Wouldn't it have been more slick to spend the extra dollar and put a firewire connector on the side?

Do apple even offer a digital a/v out cable from the display port?

Never heard of such a crude behaviour, this really sucks.

Do you see a professional photographer or designer buying a top of the line laptop and applying a 5$ piece of film on it?

Me neither..

It's quite annoying that all these glossy advocates here seem to think that matte doesn't deserve to exist and that it's a non-issue. If you like glossy, than be happy, but don't try to tell matte preferrers what they should do or like.

Hey, I don't mean to sound mean here, but would some of you dorks ****? I mean seriously, stop your b!tching here. What did you want expect these notebooks to do, give you oral gratification on top of being a laptop? Geez...just be happy it got an update and a redesign.

Sorry, don't want to come off pissy but I can only take so much complaining. ;)

Jonathan

Nothing wrong with people voicing their frustrations with the update, it's not like screens/firewire/pricing are infeasible for apple to change.
Nothing wrong with people saying they're happy with the products and that it suits them.
What's the point in complaining about people complaining though? :)

polarizing eyewear in order?

polarizing lenses can't be clear, but they can be light gray. maybe that's an option outdoors or near a window if you're desparate.

Thank you. Especially every thread having the same reply, "No Firewire, Im not buying!"

People do realise that the 8600MGT is nearly identical to the 9600M GT...

Except the 9600GT has hybrid SLI which allows it to work with the onboard GPU to seamlessly and automatically switch between low power mode and high performance graphics on the fly without needing a reboot or logging out.

Which begs the question... why do you need to log out on the Mac?

I think I'm the only person here who really likes the new MacBook and MacBook Pro.

No, I like it. There are some cons I admit (glossy screen, duh), and the Q&A afterwards seemed to be an indicator of a direction I may not be happy with. But for this model refresh, I felt the pros far outweighed the cons. An easily removable hard drive was a big unexpected plus. Also, waiting for some teardowns, but is the optical drive easily replaceable too?

Anyway, I like the overall look now that I've seen some non-blurry, oddly cropped and angled "spy" shots. I was little worried before.
