Even Linus LOVES the MacBook Neo: No more ugly notch, affordable price, silent and fanless design, etc. I would love to see more color options though like Lilac, Dark Purple, Aqua, and Azure.

Anyone paying $700 for the upgrade if they can get the M4 Air for $50 more refurbished from Apple with the same warranty….should not be trusted with money decisions.

"….should not be trusted with money decisions."

I'm not sure if this is fair. I bought a Neo on Friday because I thought it was outstanding value for the money. $499 with student discount is CHEAP. Even at $599 it would be a great deal. A sub-$600 Apple computer with the same build quality and software Apple is known for.

Some of the wealthiest people in the world own modest products. Billionaire Warren Buffet drives a 2014 Cadillac, and billionaire Elon Musk drives Tesla Model S/X, which are CHEAP in respect to his net worth.

And, some people that are highly leveraged with debt present themselves as wealthy.

I make a good living, but I know a good value when I see it.

I said anyone paying $700 AND if the M4 is $50 more.

Is the M4 $750? The cheapest (and only refurbished M4 Air) I see on Apple.com is $1099.

The cheapest M4 Best Buy has is $815 in fair condition. The next cheapest refurb is $900.

There's nothing quite like unwrapping a brand new machine that you know is yours and yours only!

The stock comes and goes but the M4 was $759 when the Neo come out and will likely reappear.

Can you explain why? This computer is not made for any kind of heavy stuff so students should be fine with 256gb in my guess… There Chromebooks out there with 128 or even 64gb of storage.
Yes, I can explain why. I often work with students, and this is one of the most frequent questions I get: “How can I clean up my Mac? I have no space left.” Most of them don’t know the difference between RAM and SSD storage. Their usual conclusion is the same: “I should have paid a bit more for more drive space.” With macOS System Data, caches, Time Machine local snapshots, logs, Spotlight indexing, virtual memory swap files, the system can grow very large. Storage then become a constant source of frustration, even for basic stuff.

Yeah there's a few things you need to do if you're going for 256-512GB of storage

  • don't back up devices to your mac, use icloud to sync / back up things
  • probably skip time machine, and sync your documents to icloud
  • only keep recent things in icloud on your mac

essentially, treat icloud as primary storage (i.e., log into icloud and move your desktop/documents/etc. to icloud), and the mac as a cache of recently used stuff. Think of your mac as less the primary store of your information and more as a local copy to work on.

That can work fairly well, and is why ipads and iphones can get away with far less storage.

The added benefit is that once you do this, and treat the mac as more of a terminal to work on stuff stored in icloud is that if the machine dies: just log into another device and carry on.

Whilst i'd be devastated if my M4 max died, i could carry on doing most of my work from my ipad, iphone, spare old macbook, etc. because all my important data is either cloud synced or on my NAS.

This DOES mean you need to make sure your icloud account has multi-factor and a secure password.
