I actually had the $699 version of the Neo in my cart at Apple’s online store when my head cleared. Instead I ordered a refurbed M4 MBA 16/256 for only $50 more. Should I have ordered the same MBA back when I could get a brand-new example for the same price? Sure. But I was holding out hope that the Neo would be thinner and/or lighter. It turns out that it’s not. And who’s to say my “refurbished” MBA isn’t actually new with Apple dumping supply now that the M5 MBA is out?

You punished Apple by giving them $50 more and helping them empty their surplus store.
Wish more people did this.

You know.. you are right. I'm sitting here in a dimly lit room on my 15" Air and TBH, the backlit keyboard is a requirement as well.

I had a store credit, cancelled my order and when it is back I'll order a refurb. Nice to have MagSafe as well.

Don't think I am missing out on anything other than "the latest"

It's a good thing you're giving Apple more money and helping them empty their surplus store.

I'm curious to see how well VMware Fusion will run on it.
It runs well on my MB Air M1 8GB.👍

It will run almost exactly the same performance wise.

The CPU is slightly faster, but the memory transfer speed is lower. Slower memory transfers might affect compressing memory slightly, but faster CPU probably makes up for it. Anyway, I don't think it will be noticeable.

no backlit keyboard in 2026 is shameful.
On a white keyboard?

$499 is the EDU price which can be gotten by anybody as Apple doesn't "check". Nothing dishonest about it at all so behave.
I'm not judging. Do what you want to do, but how does the fact that they don't check make it not dishonest?

If you ask me my age and I lie but you don't check my ID to confirm, does that mean I was honest? 🤔

If somebody wants to spend an extra 100 bucks to pretend to be "honest" then that's their choice. If that makes them think they're being honest then they're lying to themselves. Everybody is dishonest and those that pretend otherwise are lying to themselves.

I was simply stating of fact: claiming a discount for students and educators when you are not a student or educator is by definition dishonest.

I couldn't care less if people choose to be dishonest in this regard, but call a spade a spade.

or, it might be that supplying and stocking color coded power cables costs more money on a "cheap as they can make it" device? I'm impressed that they actually color matched the keyboards.
iMac is also sold on the cheap, yes I do have to agree that I was surprised that the keyboard keys were colour coded and not just white like the iMac keyboard but that also complimented the white frame around the iMac display and is complimentary aesthetics.

Apple makes tons of colour coded USB-C cables, I don’t believe cost is a big factor, when rev. b is introduced with it was will the reasoning be??

Exactly what is your point? I’m not trying to “punish” anyone. I’m merely acting in my own interests.

It's not a fact though, is it? You're applying your narrative and interpretation to the position. There is no qualifier of the definition of "dishonest" in any context here. One can easily postulate being a 'student of life' so "qualifies" for this discount. It all goes back to how people view the utility of their dollar. I make systems work for me but people can happily pay a 100$ tax is that makes them feel better.

Just don’t run for elected office.

Some people dont work in the dark

You’ve got that right. And Dark or not, you’re supposed to be looking at the screen when you type, not the keyboard. There’s things called Home keys and they have marks on them for a reason. Don’t they teach proper typing techniques in schools anymore?

I’d buy on for my 80yo Mom. She’s now reluctant to use her M1 iMac in the office.

I’m actually considering one to use instead of my M1 11” iPad Pro. I downsized from the 12.9 and still am not happy. My keyboard broke a key out of warranty. There is nothing wrong with the iPad, I have the 1TB model so extra ram, I just miss the screen size for my “lounge in bed/couch” uses. Then I’d still get a new Mini for my heavier lifting. Or I buy this in pink and trade the kid for her m2 MBA that is wasted on her and wait for the M5 mini. Hmmmm…….

ETA: guess she is down for that 🤣🤣🤣 (she is 22, target market and driven by product colors)

For those of us who learned how to type on typewriters, computer keyboards have never been as intuitive. For a long time it was because most computer keyboards weren’t truly full-sized. But, even now, it just doesn’t come as naturally.

In my personal case, all of this is aggravated by the fact that when I was learning how to type in high school, I was working in a radio newsroom on weekends. The proper way to learn typing is to use proper 10-finger technique and then build speed with time. But I had to bang out newscasts quickly on ancient Underwoods for two shifts every week. So I developed a strange hybrid using six-to-eight fingers. Half real typing and half hunt and peck. It got the job done for 51 years - even in network newsrooms.

"Available to current and newly accepted university students and their parents, as well as faculty, staff and homeschool teachers at all levels".

Again, nobody cares if you're dishonest about your eligibility; certainly not me, and evidently not even Apple, but don't try and give me, "I'm a student of life so I qualify". 😅

It actually sounds like you're the one trying to make yourself feel better by coming up with every imaginably rationalization. I'm trying to say that you don't need to.

You're telling a white lie to save some money that a multi-trillion dollar company isn't going to miss... No one cares, but it's still a lie.

BTW, I use the discount too... Of course, I happen to actually be an educator. But I also share the link with my non-educator friends who don't know about it. 😉

Buying a computer with a 256 GB SSD is a very bad idea for most people, including students.
I really depends on the kind of data you have. For most people, their photo library is the biggest data block and those get big quickly. If you don’t have a to of photos or if you don’t keep photos on the machine, then 256 becomes reasonable. If you turn on optimized storage, a lot of your data won’t be on the local storage.

My last work machines have had 256GB and I only use about half of it. That’s because I don’t keep large media file on it and, even though I’m a bit of a pack rat, many other files are kept on servers.

It’s not always so simple. Typing passwords or numbers is trickier if you can’t see the keyboard. Most of us are not so optimal at touch typing that we can always hit the 1 instead of the 2 or not mess up that oddly paired key combo for the password. Having a backlit keyboard removes that concern. Of course, so does turning on a light and while I would miss a backlit keyboard on these devices, I understand the tradeoff and consider it reasonable.

I learned to type on a typewriter as well, it definitely took some time to adjust to a keyboard, that’s for sure! Thanks for sharing your story, very insightful about your experience with that. I’d imagine having to pump things out at work doesn’t allow much time to get a 10 finger technique going whereas the work material is needing to get out. If it works it works!

Head to head, the M4 Air is a better value (for my needs)
Different people have different needs, whether the MacBook Neo is a good value or not depends on the needs of the user.

The point of the Neo was not to be a lower cost replacement for the MBA's and MBP's, instead it was intended to be a replacement for the relatively low end Windows laptops.
