On an earnings call in late April, Apple's CEO Tim Cook said that customer response to the MacBook Neo was "off the charts," and the popularity of the laptop has reportedly led the company to significantly boost production.

Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo this week said he believes that MacBook Neo shipments to Apple were doubled from an initial target of 5 million units to 10 million units in 2026 at some point after the laptop launched in March.

Apple was very optimistic about the MacBook Neo before announcing it, but the company still "undercalled" the level of enthusiasm that the laptop would generate, according to Cook. He said that MacBook Neo demand exceeded Apple's expectations and helped to drive a record number of first-time Mac buyers last quarter.

New figures from market research firm IDC support Apple's claim that the MacBook Neo is selling well, and the Windows PC industry has taken notice. For example, Dell recently introduced a redesigned XPS 13 laptop from $699 and said it has features "you won't find on a MacBook Neo," such as a touch screen and a backlit keyboard.

"Apple's MacBook Neo is a capable machine, and its arrival confirms that there's real appetite for premium quality at accessible prices," admitted Dell.

With a starting price of $599 in the U.S., or $499 for college students, the MacBook Neo is Apple's most affordable MacBook ever. Powered by the iPhone's A18 Pro chip, the laptop is available in colorful finishes like Citrus and Blush.

A second-generation MacBook Neo is expected to launch next year with an A19 Pro chip and 12GB of RAM.

I know of several people who went to Best Buy and the Apple Store looking for a Neo (one was our daughter). When they found out there was none in stock they moved upmarket to a MacBook Air.

There may be a sizable boost in new Mac users from people with similar experiences.

I was planning on buying an Air for my daughter. When the Neo was announced I considered that instead, but with the recent Air sale price ($900) went with that instead. We are not new Mac users, although my daughter is coming from a Chromebook so technically counts. The extra $300 was worth it to me to get her something that should last for many years to come.

I’m not surprised. I love my Neo, and after about a month with it I am even happier with the purchase. The Neo has a lot of personality and looks and feels so good in person!

There was an old ad campaign for Cool Ranch Doritos in which Jay Leno directly addressed the camera/TV audience and said, "Crunch all you want. We'll make more."

That's what TSMC and Apple are doing with the Neo. If recent reports are to be believed, Apple is taking a decent hit to their margins. And yes, this should be a pleasant surprise to everyone inside and outside Apple, since the company only sells 20-25 million Macs total on an annual basis. The Neo alone might take them to 35 million. That's a serious reversal of fortune for the Mac compared to a decade ago.

I’m curious if iPad sales are affected .

I just hope this realization that cheaper sells (to a certain market) does not mean less focus on the top-end Macs and MacBooks. I know Apple makes more money selling “many x cheap”, vs. “few x expensive”, but Apple has always been known for delivering great high-end computers like the Mac Pro, the iMac Pro, and the MacBook Pro. I know they are dropping the Mac Pro, but then let’s get a Studio Pro…

At the low price point pc makers respond with theirs to counter Neo 🙂.

At the high price point Microsoft announced:

Microsoft Surface Laptop Ultra RTX Spark and premium design

You have to love the fact they called it Ultra 🙂
