just noticed a crack on the right palm rest last night, with another forming on the left. Made a genius appointment today at 1:30... guy took one look at it and said it will be replaced free of charge! woot man cause i would have been heated if it wasn't. my macbook is exactly 2 years old:D

Hi,

My sister brought hers in a few months ago and had the palm rest, track pad, keyboard, and screen bezel all replaced in an hour. No charge. Hers is about 2.5 years old. Now it looks brand new.

Dang, if I had known they'd just replace it if I brought it in, even if it was out of warranty, I'd have had mine replaced long time ago.

As is I already replaced it myself when I needed to replace the cooling fan and it's about to be older than three years (might be this month but I think it has a month before it's three years old).

*mutter*, I could have had a crackless keyboard a long time ago (I just kinda dealt with it since I decided it was cosmetic and I didn't think Apple would do anything about it since the computer was out of warranty. Though I had thought they should since everyone I know with this style laptop had those cracks so it was obviously a design flaw (friend of mine had them, the keyboard died and they replaced the top case with it, and the new top case cracked too!).

Well, at least I know Apple actually was being cool about it and fixing it for people.

So is it really caused by the two little "feet" on the monitor part resting on the keyboard rest? I always figured it was from my palms resting on the palm rest? I ask cause this matters on the new keyboard as when I first got the laptop I was using it more as a laptop (using the keyboard and it was open) where as now it's usually closed with my desktop keyboard sitting on top of it. I might have to find some padding for it when it's on my desk (rather not crack it again, at least not until they come out with a laptop I want to replace it with).

Wow, happy I stumbled across this!

I have a Macbook from January 2008 and mine cracked just over a year ago, when it was about 3 months out of Warranty. I figured it was a lost cause and never persued the matter, but I will certainly be making the trip to my local Apple store to get this fixed. I'll miss the crack though.. but not so much now I know it's not a unique scar for my Macbook :)

Thanks for this guys - I'm sure I'll post again when I've got this fixed!

Don't miss the Macbook crack too much! Just back up to a mirror and drop your pants and look at that big scar of a crack you have as it will be there for a long time to come.
:eek::D:eek::D:apple::apple::apple:

That's random as all hell, but I just got back from the Apple store with my new palmrest! Having a fresh keyboard and trackpad (mine had so much use they were glossy) is really, really nice, too.

So what's this I hear about a whole new laptop on the third repair?

My wife's white Macbook has been in for repair so many times I cannot even count; it has been sent in three separate times for cracked plastic alone.

2nd repair, and how it came back to us (video)

3rd repair that is being sent in now.

She has an extended Applecare warranty, and was refused repair the third time. I called Apple customer service and they sent us a box to get it repaired (on its way back now).

In addition to plastic, she has had the LCD screen replaced, keyboard topcase (first repair), battery, and now the fan (which is grinding).

This thing is a piece of junk, we are buying a Vaio when the semester is over.

i will have had my mid 2009 whitebook for a year at the end of this month, and so far no signs of cracking or anything. that said, it does sit on my desk 90% of the time, but i still feel pretty lucky.

i guess my warranty is up at the end of this month too. $20 says i get palmrest cracks this summer.

Because it's a documented defect, they'll fix it up to 3 years after the purchase. ;)

!!!! hooray :D

Ya, it's pretty sweet, I got mine replaced recently, new keyboard and trackpad too ('cause it's all one piece)... i wonder if I now get ANOTHER three years on top... like, now that piece is under warranty for three years...hmmmm

I guess this might be the right place to ask this, since the thread I made hasn't gotten any replies.

I'm getting a deal on a used MB with one of these cosmetic cracks. Would that crack lead to other issues, or is it as simple as "take it to Apple"? I only ask because I don't want to get burned for $550 for being overzealous to buy a used MB.

The MB in question is about a year and a half old, 2gb, 2.40 ghz core 2 duo processor, running Leopard.

I don't think there are any deep issues with the cracking problem, but you should be able to get it fixed.

Ok mine is going to be 2 years old too! there is no Apple store near my area, the closest one is about 1-2 hours away. maybe 1:30. i made the dumbest mistake by not buying apple care, which i am still kicking myself on the butt! anywho will they still take care of it if i just call apple?

Just call Apple, they fixed mine for free three times and its way past applecare. My MacBook was from 2007!

I didn't know it was only for 3 years after purchase. I better send mine in quick then. I only have 5 months left before my 3 year date. This is the only computer in my house that is newer than 1994 though so its hard to part with it. Closest apple store is 2 hours away.

Aghh after a long battle with 3 different apple care guys, i finally got it solved. the first guy was nice and had everything ready, BUT....i was put on hold and because of this wind storm we are having, my phone got disconnected. i waited hoping he'd call back, nothing. i called back and told them i had already done this by phone and i was disconnected. the man asked what my problem was, i told him and he said "well you are almost 2 years into your expired warranty, therefore we can't help you" i told him what you guys where saying here and he said "well i do not know why an apple genius will tell you that, sorry. is there anything else i can help you with...?" so i said no and hung up. i called for the 3rd time, it was the same man, so i hung up... i called for the 4th time the same man again!!! AGHHH! (this is the time when i almost felt like slapping myself for not using my cell phone to call in the first place, the other nice man got disconnected ...:() so i called in for the 5th time and i got another guy who was giving me issues, he had told me my warranty had expired, i explained to him and told him that even though it had expired i was told that i was still able to get it fixed with in 3 years. The guy went to go ask or do something, when he came back he was asking me for my information...:) i knew it was a good sign. after 4 minutes or so, he had to verify with someone since my warranty had expired, and this is the part where i got disconnected the first time...:(...YES i was scared all over again... i was put on hold for 10 dreadful minutes, each second being more scary than the last. any who after a long long hour of all this happening, i finally got the OK.. :]

so the meaning of this is DO NOT GIVE UP! they will fix it just be patient and if you get rejected call back, because there are some people who are working there that quite frankly do not care. they just do not want to bother on double checking to see if it is possible...:/

i would have taken it to the local apple store, but the closest one is 1 hour & 30 minutes away... pretty far and that is not including traffic. (traffic in LA is harsh!)

now i will be getting my palm wrest fixed and the rim of the LCD screen because it is also cracked!!!....

by the way, they asked for my password on my account... why did they do that for? the problem is obviously External not software issues....
-Good Luck

They do have to be able to turn it on and test it out after they finish fixing it to make sure everything works right.

Least that's my guess to why.

they can test it without booting in your account/system... I will always remove my harddrive when I turn in my computer... who guarantees yout that they don't go through your files?

My macbook is nearly 3.5 years old, with this problem.. will they still repair it for free?

grr.....you can always ask....BUT most likely you will have a hard time with them. mine is only 1 year old and some months and i had a very hard time. maybe if you go to an actual apple store it'll be easier.

about the logging in thing, i sent in my computer once because i had a problem when i first bought it. when it was shipped it must had gotten dent in the process. they asked me for my password but yeah i was affraid they were going to go through my stuff...! not that i should be scared but still i hate it when people go through my stuff :p so i changed the password. i might do this again, i just hope i do not get a call telling me "we need your password or we wont fix it..."...

Mine just started cracking today, it's the early 2009 model, would Apple fix it for free if it is out of warranty?
