Heh wow... my BlackBook has been slammed around since the first moment I had it and I don't have any cracks, chips or scratches*, just one hell of a lot of fingerprints!

*okay there is one scratch on the bottom where it slid off of the edge of my desk... but that doesn't count :p

lol i use my black and white macbook on the desk most the time since i dont want finger prints on it lol

Just got my second set of palmrests cracks. In addition, the part above the bumpers on the screen bezel is cracked as well, and I just got out of warranty. Apple needs to learn how to build a God damn laptop.

I only noticed the screen bezel crack on mine about 2 days ago, and the broken bit has already completely snapped off so there's now a hole next to the screen. Great build quality, Apple.

I will not be buying any more Apple products (at least not in the foreseeable future), nor will I recommend them to anybody. I'll probably keep this piece of crap for another year, assuming that it lasts that long, then get a different brand laptop when Windows 7 comes out.

are new macbooks, like ones purchased very recently still doing this?
i'm about to get one and this almost makes me not want to.....

Quite a long thread. Makes me sad because there is no reason we should even be talking about this. There's no excuse, it's a design flaw that never should have happened or at least should have been fixed with a redesign soon after problems started showing up.

But my story....I've had my Blackbook about a year and a half. It's very well used, goes all over the world and is opened and closed often. It's taken a beating. The day I got it I put on a Marware palm rest thing. Never really thought much about it but after reading about all the cracks I took a close look. The palm rest has two little cutouts for the "feet" on the top but otherwise looks just thick enough to provide support around the top part of the screen when closed. Also when closing the sound is kind of muted, like there's some cushoning going on.

Just a thought, but maybe thats why there's no sign of cracks on this particular very well used Macbook.

A guy in the office was showing me his two month old white macbook the other day. Cracked.

I was looking at this thread the other day again because the other side has now cracked so I wil have to definitly take it in now :(, anyway it seems that most of the reports (if not all) are about the white macbooks cracking. SO there might be something different between the plastics used in the white vs black.

My advice would be to wait...October time frame is the projection for the updated macbooks...I'm flipping mine within the next few weeks, as well

Very interesting point...I'm not familiar with any references to black cracks as it seems that most of the pics and reports on cracks have, indeed, been with the white macbooks...Might just be something to do with the white as you pointed out.

Just spoke with a lovely woman named Jessica at Apple Canada who approved the repair for me. I'm still very upset and becoming wary of Apple's products, but I jut wanted to express some gratitude.

She also says that if it cracks again we'll need to look into something other than repair ... so here's hoping it cracks again, LOL

Re

After reading this form I decided I would take my MB into apple and have it repaired. The geniuses were friendly and took care of it at no cost even though I am out of warranty. Thanks apple.

That's proof they acknowledge it's a common problem with the MacBooks. Very good news. I'm buying a new MacBook as soon as the new models are announced. Let's hope the (supposedly) aluminium models won't have this defect.

Apologies if this has been mentioned already.

I bought my white MB just after they were launched, and have had 5 different top cases (the keyboard, trackpad, and palm-rest areas) since then, all covered by Apple Care. The most recent one is noticeably revised, with a thicker, reinforced section around the sides, which tapers off to the edges. This, I noticed, had an updated part number on the genius bar paperwork, too. It has now lasted nearly 6 months, much longer than any since this problem began.

However, I have also got the problem with the bottom case splitting, on the side, around the battery area. An the intermitted airport problem. So back to the genius it is, again!

well if there aluminum thhere wont be magnets there for not slamming down, and will mostlikly have that little latch thing thats on every other apple laptop or is it still on the mbp, anywhos if *it* were to do something bad it would dent it and make it look just as crappy.

just got a macbook... im scared to have these cracks start happening to me. im obvioulsy going to be under warranty but dont want these to start! is it from being rough with the macbook or what>? what types of things should i AVOID!!!

Can't speak for everyone but I can assure you that prior to the first crack, we were as careful as a person would be with a laptop...After the first crack, we went into hyper 'extra care' mode and even placed a thin sheet of cushion material between the top and bottom case to help cushion the palmrest from any potential distress...That too, I'm afraid, did little to abate the crack developing...And it developed almost exactly in the same amount of time (12 months) as the first crack (Also 12 months).

You can be ginger with it, IMHO, it will occur unless they've made a change to the material they are using for the palmrest of issue some sort of product recall to correct the magnet issue (Unlikely).

I think I'm seeing the start of a crack on my (6 month old) blackbook, a tiny hairline (maybe 1/2 inch) one on the right side where everyone else seems to be having the problem. Do you think I should take it in now or wait until it becomes more noticeable?

Take it in now.

It won't be much longer now before that little crack will be far more noticeable...The decision to take it in will be a lot more clear to you then

I just got my new palmrest. Replaced under warranty.
I hope it lasts.

This is a pretty poor design for this to be happening so much.

This and the hard drive failure makes for a piece of crap, MacCrap:rolleyes:

Crackbook

Just got my whole top cover replaced due to the same issue now im selling it since it looks brand new now and I dont use it anymore :)
