I think 13.3 is too small is well, I returned my 13.3 for a 15", loving every bit of extra space I have now.

17" for stationery laptop computing

Greetings Macusers...

So far I've had a 1998 Wallstreet (hated the black keyboard, couldn't see a thing), a 2000 Blueberry iBook (at least the keyboard was a light color... and loved that "blueberry" Turquoise... wish Apple would go back to TROPICAL COLORED laptops and get away from the gawd-awful-boring black and/or white scheme), and in 2006 got this current White iBook which is either 14 or 15-inch, can't remember, but either way, screen is too small  for me.

Thankfully, I don't lug my laptops anywhere... I do all computing from bed, so laptops are the only way to go (no more sitting at desks, ugh, did that for a lifetime).

So if/when I get another laptop, I'm definitely moving up to the 17-inch baby... I want more screen real estate (so TIRED of moving things around to be able to see what's behind... that dang dock is always in the way, as are my few stickies which won't go "behind" your current webpage unless you MOVE IT, etc.) ...

Though the 17-inch may be too big for my beloved $7-wire-"stackable"-rack from Walmart that acts as my "laptop desk" and is a perfect size for this White iBook... just enough room for the ibook and a mousepad next to it (I never use the trackpad... just too old fashioned, I guess :D )

It looks like Mac Connection currently has the best price, good through June 30th: http://www.macconnection.com/IPA/Shop/Product/Detail.htm?sku=9899518

---------------------

I was disheartened to see in the photos that these 17" MBP's have BLACK KEYBOARDS! UGH! How does anyone SEE the keys when they are all black? Does the "backlight" under the keyboard really make a difference? Does it help? Please do tell... as the last thing I would want to end up with is a total black keyboard like the former Wallstreet (no light underneath in the WS) which I could never see the keys I was hitting. It was miserable. I had bought a mini laptop gooseneck light to use with it, which hung over the keyboard, and that never helped much either.

My 2 cents is that whoever-at-apple back at the drawing board is NOT thinking straight when they choose BLACK for the keyboards, light or no light underneath. :(

But then again, I would throw out ALL black/white products and go back to COLOR COLOR COLOR!

---------------------

As for batteries, since I use my laptop at home, I'm always plugged in, so don't even need the batteries. I preferred the way the former Blueberry iBook was designed, which let you just take OUT the battery, but this White iBook, the battery is PART OF the bottom of the laptop, so you MUST leave it in at all times, even though I have never used it in three years since I am always plugged in to the A/C adapter.

And from what I'm reading, these MBP's are designed the same as this White iBook as far as the battery goes?
----------------------

The last thing I am wondering, is what REALLY makes a computer GO FASTER on the internet? (since that's about all I do).

Is it the RAM?

or the HD?

or your ISP speed?

This 2006 White iBook has 1.5GB RAM, and a 60GB HD (which is down to 18GB and 6GB respectiviely = partitioned). And we just moved up to comcast 16mb+/2mb+ fiber optic high speed internet, and I tell you, this forum's pages still take FOREVER to load in.

So will the 17-inch with its 500GB-HD and 4GB RAM "GO FASTER" on the internet?

Many thanks for any tips!

Hi, i went the 13" and am very happy with it. I am coming from an old 15" powerbook, and i only feel the lack of real estate in direct comparison side-by-side. I think for portability this size is great, saves the need for a netbook or anything of that nature. This thing is screaming fast, and while the graphics aren't exactly top of the line for gaming, its of course more than enough to push enough res to a much larger display. The 17 inch is great for those who need to do, say video editing in the field. But for me the combination of portability, and the ability to drive a larger display at home is an unbeatable combination!

I love this thing to death! Its whisper quiet, and the trackpad is AWESOME. The only things that bugs me is the stupid £$%^* glossy screen!! Looks GREAT inside, but outside in daylight its a TOTAL FAIL!! Save it for the Cinema displays Apple!!

I'm not sure from your post - are you someone that likes color. :p

--------

I'm kind of in the same boat determining if I should pick up a 13".

My wife's Dell 1525 Inspiron is no longer charging and I was told it is out of warranty and the issue is with the motherboard.

So I'm trying to bring her over to :apple:, but I would like to keep the cost down - so I was looking at a basic MBP 13".

She uses her laptop almost every night "charting" - logged into the hospitals server completing patient's charts.

Tried that, full 1920x1200 on ACD 24" - normal App usage, no problem. I'd say fast actually.

Why aren't you considering the 13"+ACD then? Just curious, as I'm probably going to be moving to that setup in the near future, over a 17".

I went to an Apple Authorized Reseller to ask if I could loan a MBP 14-inch and see if it was right for my needs. I ended up taking a 13-inch and a 15-inch for me it soon became apparent that I was squinting a lot while trying to use the 13-inch MBP. The 15-inch was better for my needs. But next day I played with the big daddy of the MBP's, the 17-inch and fell for it. ;)

you remind me of the crazy "dog lady" at the dog park that thinks she can speak to all the animals.....I think it's the obsession with color!:)

LOL, I haven't liked a dog since our beloved family dog bit the kid across the street when we were all kiddies (the neighbor kid poked his nose into a dog fight), and they took the family dog away.

Now if dogs came in colors like TURQUOISE, I might reconsider, lol. :D
