Well, there were exactly 20cm on a carpet. I am really surprised... They should be a bit more durable...
Any chance I can exchange it under warranty and not paying for that?

Thanks

Not more than 20cm on a carpet!

I don't believe you I'm afraid.

I dropped my MBP onto a concrete floor from table height and there isn't a scratch or dent on the screen (which it landed on).

All that happened is the chassis twisted ever so slightly.

It might have been carpet, but there was something solid that that corner landed on.

I dropped my month old MBP, the corner dented, HDD failed, and the microphone failed. The genius replaced my MBP free of charge (I didn't even purchase AppleCare). Just call them and tell them what happened. You never know what they might do.

Hey bud,

I am not that stupid to post a topic, write mails and so if I dropped the computer from a higher point and completely knew that is a 100% my fault.

Apperantly those computers have their weak point right there. And dont forget that i am talking about Macbook Pro Retina, just slightly different then yours.
My girlfriend has MBP 13" and Ive seen this computer being dropped from greater hight on a concrete floor and there was nothing but just a scratch.

I just spoke to the authorised service centre here in Bulgaria and they will send a query to Apple if the service could be done under warranty. I really really hope the will say yes!

Thanks guys for your help!

What do people do when they drop a baby?

Haha--that is the best analogy I've ever heard here. How true--don't know very many parents with BabyCare either. Be it babies or laptops, dropping is never a pleasant experience--for the baby(laptop) or the parents.

I realize that, but aluminiummismable to be easily damaged. You shouldn't blame Apple for your negligence.

Yep this stuff happens. Im super careful but about a year ago i dropped my work laptop when I was removing it from its case at the airport. It was fine, luckily but that's just chance. It could have been smashed up.

People get laptops because they need to carry them around, otherwise a desktop is a much better choice. There's always a risk of it falling then.

By the way the previous MBP was weak around the Ethernet port, if dropped on that corner it would usually bend horribly because the aluminium is so thin there. So it wasn't much better in that sense. Most laptops have weak spots.

I hope Apple will help you out there! Good luck, I know it's awful to have this happen.

I know you are hurt by your own negligence in dropping your computer, but there is no need to post such snarky replies. Besides, MR is a public forum.

Hi guys,

Just dropped my MBP Retina from my bed... some 20cm. I was very surprised and shocked to find out that the bottom left corner of the display is dented and some 6-7mm of the left screen side is black now.
I am really disappointed from this computer... cant believe that it is so sensible . DO you have an idea if my warranty will cover this and how much a new display would cost.
I just got my MBP retina some 2 weeks ago... still feel very bad...
Please help...

Thanks!

the aluminum is very thin - much thinner than on the pro. It is a very delicate machine.

Everybody that comes in here and tells him to be more careful needs to just leave the thread, it doesnt help anything and it is just plain rude.

As to the op just call up apple and see if they will repair it, I see that you called the repair center and they are going to inquire about it, so the only thing you can do is hope that they will. If not then I would either fix it yourself, or just take it to the repair center and pay for the repair.

Actually, by posting on this forum, you've asked EVERY MEMBER for advice.

It sucks, but it's not flawed design. Get a hold of unibody MBP and press it with your finger in certain places. You will notice that the case will not give in AT ALL. Now do that to your rMBP. It will flex in many places.

Apple managed to make this laptop so thin by shaving precious micro meters off the aluminum enclosure, not just components. This means that the laptop will still be very durable (compared to other devices out there), but still more susceptible to damage.

Trust me, I know it sucks to fork out this much money and then see that happen. Upside is that the laptop is still usable, and screen replacement isn't too extreme. Hope for the best and see if Apple will agree to fix it free of charge.

I'm Polish and have lived there for a while. From my understanding, their Apple Stores are absolute joke. I hope you guys have it a bit better in Bulgaria.

For all the people blaming the build quality.. it's all about the angle at which the impact occurs! If it hits the edge section of the screen, the whole impact force will be concentrated there, there is not much you can do! I highly doubt a non-retina would've faired any better in the same instance...

And now for a troll bomb... I bet this wouldn't have happened with a 13 inch (the actual drop, not the damage).. it's smaller, more compact and easier to handle! :D

Not more than 20cm on a carpet!

Sorry, I don't buy that. a seven inch drop on carpet? From your own photo, the computer obviously hit a sharp edge. And no- you won't be getting a refund.

I believe a replacement screen from APple costs $600

Well, the guys from the service centre here in Bulgaria told me yesterday that it is going to cost around 850 Euros. Do you think I should send it to some other country in case Apple don't do it under warranty?

Warranty will not cover it. And don't blame the rMBP for you dropping it. If you wanted a drop resistant laptop should have gotten a toughbook or something.

I assume you are not from the US, so not sure if your credit card, or renters/home owners insurance would cover it.

Comments like that make me wonder why more people don't buy Lenovo.

You can break a screen dropping 5 cm if it hits the right surface at the right angle with the right weight behind it.

Fun fact: it is difficult to break a screen by itself. It is easy to break a screen when attached to something heavy; such as a phone, laptop, camera, etc.

----------

Its a laptop, how about you NOT drop it?

Again, it's a portable device. Just like you say - it IS a LAPTOP, as in - make something that isn't easily breakable.

This would go against Apple's form-over-function design that's plagued their laptops for over six years now.

Did Apple drop his laptop? No. Does Apple make $2000+ machines that are easier to break than my $320 Lenovo SL410? Yes.

Absolutely right!

Just got a feedback from Apple. They refused to cover the repair. I am on my own. Thats it! The last chance is if I can get a back dated insurance otherwise I have to pay 850 Euros. :(

Anyway... thanks a lot guys,... its been a pleasure and very helpful!
