Thanks that looks awesome. Commonmind could you please test the "Total War:Shogun 2" Demo, if you have enough time? That would be very nice ;).

That is amazing............... especially Crysis 2...... did you happen to get the Anti-Glare or the Glossy? [Disregard, noticed it was AG in other videos]

Antiglare.. it really made a difference for me. I have the Macbook pro 13" 2009/10 and using it during the day was awful, the reflection just killed it. I love my anti glare.

Is the noise level relatively quiet playing those games? (XT silent, fan noise not too high) Your combination of music with the awesome graphics in the videos really reassures me of my decision to go AG and greatly looking forward to it.

If noise level is ok.... then I am 100% reassured about Macbook pro.

it is pretty interesting. The first two days I had it (I got it a day after it came out) I noticed the fan was kicking in a lot. Now, the fan kicks in at first but then it calms down after 5 minutes. Also, for example, when I am playing Civ 5 and when I switch back from the strategy mode (where it doesnt require much of the GPU) to the 3D mode I hear the fan kicking in and then it settles down again.

So, that makes me think, was the "thermal goop" there on purpose? would it make sense that it would settle after a while? I dont know.. I am glad I didnt open this baby up. I wouldnt mind cracking it open if it were $1000 less.

to sum up, the fan noise doesnt bother me at all - I usually play games on mute because I got kids running around and I gotta listen for them, so I would know about the fan if it was loud all the time.

Can anybody have a look as to how low you have to lower the resolution to be able to play Crysis 2 comfortably on Advanced? I would expect you would be fine around the 720p area.

Any resolution but native will look AWFUL on a LCD screen. Better put the textures/details in Low than lower the resolution. And if you really have to, don't stretch it and play in windowed mode.

Or just lean back a bit when you play...

And I am aware what things look like at non-native resolutions. I find it is very dependent on the game. ie, SC2 needs native resolution because of the control bars. But FEAR 2 does not, as the HUD is blurry anyway.

It was my understanding that Crysis 2 used automatic FSAA filters, which should make the game look great even without normal FSAA, and perhaps at non-standard resolutions.

MSI Afterburner works fine - you only have to follow the instructions.

17'' Antiglare
2.3GHz Quad i7
8GB 1066MHz (the old ones from the MBP 2010 are working just fine)
Intel Postville 160GB SSD

3DMark11:

Windows 7 experience index:

Clocks:

I'm sure more is possible - but I have to work else I wouldn't have the money for my macbook :p
I played for 1 1/2 hours - seems to be stable but i have to test it for a longer time.

According to GPU-Z the temperatures are fine (80-85°C testing with Furmark) but Furmark only stresses the GPU and as the heatpipe is shared between the CPU and GPU it would be better to stress test both to archive a stable overclock. The palmrest was cool all the time but it was quite hot above the keyboard.

Other things I've noticed about the 2011 MBP compared to the 2010:
- When the screen backlight changes it actually fades like the 13'' ones.
- Bootup (EFI) takes slightly longer
- In Bootcamp, Windows finally uses AHCI mode with NCQ natively. Before, windows had to be modified to take advantage of it.
- No TRIM for intel SSD's yet.
- Fans seems to be slightly lounder and turn on sooner even when only one core (singlethreaded app) is using it. Seems to be Intels Turboboost feature that is maxing out the TDP with one core overclocked in turbo mode.

Thats strange, I had already tried that yesterday with MSI afterburner and still wasnt able to OC! I was running 2.1.0 beta 7, what version are you using?
Also are you running stock drivers or did you update the CCC? I am running stock boot camp drivers and there is no CCC installed which maybe my problem

I used http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/images/MSIAfterburnerSetup210.zip from http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/download.htm

Also I installed the up to date Catalyst Control Center (not suite) from AMD before I installed the Bootcamp drivers but I am not sure if this really makes the difference as I actually have all those AMD services and autostart items disabled in msconfig.

Sure, later when I'm home.

Great, thanks for that. Maybe it was just a problem with the beta I was using then. Will download the version you listed and give it a go, and if that doesnt work will try and install CCC (dont really want to though as its just extra bloat as I dont currently need any of its features).

Wow!!! Got MSI afterburner working thanks to Nightkrawler.

Just clocked it to 800/900 and no problems at all.

3Dmark06 is now: 11475 :)
SM2: 3887 SM3: 4998 CPU: 5653

I am so chuffed, should give me a healthy boost in shogun 2 and crysis 2 (the only games that I have found struggled on the 6750)

The temps are still good so I might see if I can push it a bit more

Wow! Now I'm really excited to get mine, in about 2 months time :( Want one more than ever!

hey thx for that ! please, in all honesty considering u had both macbook pro 2010 and now 2011, would u suggest a guy like me to upgrade to the new one with the 6750 or just stay happy with the gt330 512mb ?

would i get slights or enormous graphic boost for a 2500$ upgrade ?
w8ing patiently for your answer

I had a 2010 MBP17 and now have the 2011 MBP17. For me it was definately worth it. I managed to sell my 2010 for the same price I bought it for (I bought it second hand) but still had to add £700 ($1100) to buy my new 2011
The main reasons it was worth it for me:
-I do a lot of encoding and the quad really helps.
-I play a lot of BFBC2 and again the quad makes the game smoother (less fps dips in heavy firefights)
-I like to game at native res and although the overclocked 330m was a great card I couldnt play many games in the 17's 1920x1200, the 6750 even at stock scores manages this well on most current games.
Also the gt330m couldnt cope well with BFBC2 or MOH2010 in dx11 so I cant see much hope in getting BF3 playable on release on it, I am hoping to be able to play BF3 on my 2011 (its my only game capable machine as I sold my desktop)

thank you for this - I was able to bump GTA IV to Very High and I got solid 39FPS!.. and thats very high on everything (water, shador) and I also just bumped up Dragon Age 2 and got very smooth gameplay.
