Starcraft 2, 1680x1050 and HD6750

Can someone shed light on the performance of sc2 with high-res 1680x1050 and HD6750 both in OSX and bootcamped W7.

Some Noob questions please bare with me xD

Considering buying the low or high end 15" (Would be a switch from PC to Mac as well but most likely puttin my windows 7 on it as well via boot camp)...
-The AMD 6750M is a must for games such as SCII correct? Any idea what the SCII fps stats are on the 6490M?
-The main difference seems to be 6750M has 4x the GDDR5 of 6490M, what exactly does that affect in terms of graphics?
-In SCII/LoL/WoW is the better FPS worth the heating problems for running through boot camp? Is is easily fixable with a laptop cooler?

No difference playing back HD content. I imagine the IGP is taking care of that decode anyways.

For light Photoshop work, you'd probably never notice. Photoshop CS5 can take advantage of OpenGL to do some of its drawing, to do so requires a decent amount of framebuffer. The 6750M's 1GB of VRAM is virtually necessary for fluidly working with large and complex photoshop manipulations.

What do you think about a few 720p youtubes open while a game is minimized with skype on and maybe a stream like live stream or own3d? (on the 6490)

Thanks!

The problem with the video is that he is in relatively unpopulated areas, so of course the framerate is high. I would like to see the fps in a 25 man raid boss encounter, or a BG where there is lots of fighting going on around the player, or Org in trade district during prime time. I'd bet the frame rates would be significantly lower.

The thing is, I believe I read that the CPU is what gets taxed when there are large numbers of people around and with a 2.2 GHz quad, I think it will be just fine. I'll be able to find out how it performs for myself when mine arrives next week.

ok guys, for those who got the new one with the 6750, how does it compare with the gt330 from the mid-2010 i7 15" macbook pro.

here is my exp with the gt330, i copy/paste what i wrote on another forum :

Thx God i found this forum !
i am a very very serious starcraft 2 geek and i own a macbook pro mid-2010 with the core i7 2.66GHz and the GT330M 512Mb GDDR3.

My goal with this machine is to test Starcraft 2 and get the best out of it graphics wise and also by performance.

My post will greatly help you decide if you should get the mid 2010 or the new 2011 quad core, as i am on the same boat with you guys, cause obviously my main concern is this :

GT330M vs 6750M = How do they really compare ?

First off, i want to point that all the tests i red on barefeet mac, geekbench etc are not really accurate for gamers like us because they use stock drivers and do not improve machine perf with latest windows 7 updates, drivers, backgrounds services etc.

My machine is running Bootcamp windows 7 64bit ultimate edition and has 4Gb of Ram (3.86Gb usable). i get an overall score of 5.9 in Windows exp index.

Details :

1- processor : 6.9
2- memory : 5.9
3- graphics : 6.5
4- gaming graphics : 6.5
5- primary hdd : 5.9

With apple stock drivers i had 6.3 in Both graphics, But i downloaded the drivers from Laptopvideo.com aka 267.05 which gave me outstanding results.

Plus i overclocked the GT330 with Nvidia inspector to :
GPU Clock : 650 (original is 500)
Memory : 900 (original 790)
Shader : 1430 (original 1100)

My fans and heat dont go up 73 degrees which is BEST.

Now the FPS in Starcraft 2 :

if i put all in medium i get 90-130 FPS in 4v4, Desert Strike Games
High, i get 70-90
ultra, i get 55-60
During gigantic battles, i get a steady 30-36 FPS.

Of course, keep in mind that the internet connection of other players can reduce greatly the fps during gameplay... thats a fact i learnt.

Now i gave you all my tests, and i want to know the same with the Radeon 6750 to really know if its worth it or not.

The other day i was testing an Acer gaming laptop with a geforce gtx460 and Starcraft 2 gave a powerful 70FPS out of the box with Stock drivers ! i hate acer laptop cause they are poorly made, but performance wise they seem to be very good. If the new 2011 macbook pro can achieve the same 70 fps ootb, i will go for it.

Waiting for your results guys ;)

Not that it helps you so much.

But a user in here did run sc2 in osx (ye I know it's bad) and he got 30fps. High settings.

But thought you could compare I'f you know what you got in osx.

Either card will play SC2 just fine. But if you get the 6490M, you'll be playing probably low or medium graphics, while if you go for the 6750M, you'll be running at high, or maybe some ultra. Therefore, if you just want to play, it doesn't matter. If you want it to look pretty too, don't even consider getting the low end 15".

-The main difference seems to be 6750M has 4x the GDDR5 of 6490M, what exactly does that affect in terms of graphics?

The main difference between the 6750M and the 6490M is that the 6750M has 480 cores, where as the 6490M has 160. That means the 6750M has much more horsepower to colour a lot more pixels than the 6490M. The extra VRAM just allows the 6750M to store higher resolution textures, as it is fast enough to chew on these, providing better game graphics.

A graphics card is basically a little self-contained computer on serious steroids and adrenaline. The amount of power it has is dictated by the number of cores (the CPU) and the core clock speed, while the VRAM holds the information for the cores to process. If there aren't enough cores compared to the amount of VRAM, it's effectively wasting money, and if there isn't enough VRAM for the amount of cores, then the cores can get starved for information.

-In SCII/LoL/WoW is the better FPS worth the heating problems for running through boot camp? Is is easily fixable with a laptop cooler?

Windows only gets hot because it doesn't use the Intel IGP, and only uses the dedicated GPU. If you're going into Boot Camp purely to game, and do things that would use the dedicated GPU, it's irrelevant.

Hi :apple: guys!

Crysis was run at 1440x1050 on an external monitor since the benchmark program does not allow 1440x900. I ran one bench at high and the other at medium.

Would you pleas do me a favor

I am interested to change sides (to the :apple: side ;) ) and need a comparison to this:

pleeeeeeaaaas run Crysis benchmark once again with this settings.

I can't decide between the high 15" or the low 13" (and stay with my Alien)

Thank you very much ;)

Greetings
Julian

Just as another reference point i have just benchmarked my Windows Desktop PC with 3d Mark Vantage to compare it to the MBP 15" results.

Specs: Core2Quad 9550 4x2.83Ghz (no i7), Ati HD4870X2 (Dual GPU), 8GB RAM

I purchased this PC in late 2008 and it was top of the line back then and even today performs very good with all the modern games even though you can get alot more game performance from modern Desktop hardware.

3D Mark Vantage Scores:

My Desktop Score / Macbook Pro 15" 6750 Score

CPU Score: 11086.11 / 18371
GPU Score: 14009.28 / 4444
Overall Score: 13142.9 3DMarks / 5483 3DMarks

Interesting to note that the new MBP Cpu is actually alot faster than my Core2Quad Desktop CPU as it seems. That said, the game performance of my Desktop from late 2008 still seems to be around 2.5x higher than that of the MBP 15" with Ati 6750.

That said, the 4870X2 in my PC is a Dual-GPU card which means its essentially two Desktop 4870s in Crossfire on one board. Its a monster of a card and very power hungry. The MBP would be able to keep up with a Single 4870 in this PC quite well it seems, which is rather impressive. Since my brother has a Single 4870 in his PC, i will test that one aswell next week.

Yep, the 6750m is close to a mobility 4850/70 and 280m GTX. Wicked.

Those are old parts - but it used to take a 2" thick 14 lb Alienware to get that kind or performance.

Can someone maybe show how the 6750 looks like in GPU Z ?

Also i am particularly interested in how Fallout 3/New Vegas are being handled by the new gpu..:D

Yes. I imagine the 6490M could sort out SC2 to some degree, but it wouldn't be a great experience.

-The main difference seems to be 6750M has 4x the GDDR5 of 6490M, what exactly does that affect in terms of graphics?
That's only half the story. It is also a much faster GPU. Has much greater memory bandwidth (twice the bus width). It is simply vastly superior in every way.

-In SCII/LoL/WoW is the better FPS worth the heating problems for running through boot camp? Is is easily fixable with a laptop cooler?
Weird question. I would say absolutely. The heat isn't really so much of a "problem" as it is a byproduct of a lot of power in a small box. Keep the laptop on a hard flat surface when gaming, get AppleCare, and you should be set. If it does burn itself up within 3 years, Apple will fix it for you.

What do you think about a few 720p youtubes open while a game is minimized with skype on and maybe a stream like live stream or own3d? (on the 6490)
I think it depends on the game. Everything else is easy. You've expressed a desire to play games at good frame rates. You need the premium 15" machine, that's pretty much the end of it.

The CPU score is so high because of the Sandy Bridge architecture btw. Almost every before/after comparison of any laptop shows a 40-50% increase in CPU benchmark scores.

First thing I would consider is that new iMacs cannot be far away and they will have Sandy Bridge and a better GPU.
If you have a MBA you know how light and portable it is. I carry mine around dramatically more than I ever did a 15-inch which means it gets used more.

Here is a comparison of the desktop versions of those GPU's.

Is the ATI 6750m better than the ATI 4850m (iMac Late 2009)?

Hello everyone,

I would like to know whether I should switch from my iMac late 2009 (i7, 8GB Ram, 4850m, 1TB HDD) and my MacBook Air 13" Best Specs to the new MBP 15"?! I would like to know whether the 6750 is faster than the 4850 or not?! I think the 4850 is faster. What do you think/know?!

Thx for the help!

thanks for the link!

I think I'll wait for a iMac Refresh and just update my iMac! Then I will have a BEAST and a fast and ULTRAportable notebook!

Now these numbers are outstanding !! :D It seems like this card is at least twice as fast as the 330m...

Also it seems like Apple underclocked only the memory, the core itself seems ok. Overclocking via Catalyst Control Center should be possible, yes ? Who knows how much faster this thing could get :D

So the 6750M handles F1 2010 better than my Alienware M15x (with 5850) most because of the CPU (that game is very demandning on the CPU)

F1 2010
900p, all high, no AA
min 43 fps, avg 52.5
using in game timedemo

Dirt 2
900p, all high, no AA
min 27 fps, avg 37
using in game timedemo

Dragon Age 2 Demo
900p all very high, no AA
Avg: 47.083 - Min: 24 - Max: 65
(I think I left v-sync on by mistake - so the score would be even better)

So yes, this is a reasonably good gaming PC in addition to having everything else you love about a Mac.

ludwing, can you please give me the details of your windows experience index ?
also, what is your fps in starcraft 2 in low/medium/high/ultra settings ?
please answer me because i have to make my mind till sunday wether i sell my current mbp and get the newest one ;)
thx

Thank you so much! F1 2010 is my favorite game and these scores are really nice. One question though, or request: was DX11 enabled in the F1 benchmark? (needs patch 1.01 to show)

hey OP, can you try out crysis with this mod. In that thread, it said it increased fps for many people. I would like to know ho well the MBP handles this. thanks in advance. i plan to get the same macbook pro but with a high res antiglare for college. I am very interested as to how this computer plays stuff at 1680x1050. how much of a perf hit would there be when playing at 1680x1050 as opposed to 1440x900.

EDIT: can you also check out how it handles crysis with a mix of mediums and highs? because it was 53 fps in medium so i would wager that a mix od highs and mediums should play nicely.

I think you need to run it on Ultra for DX11.

I'll try it later on Ultra.

@lewdvig

thanks for the numbers, would be great if you could test 3dmark06 aswell because you can find that score for almost any card/notebook on notebookcheck.com which makes its nice for comparing performance :)

I believe the GPUs in the iMacs are not mobile parts. You can't compare a mobile class GPU to a desktop class GPU. The desktop 4850 will kill the fastest mobile GPU.

That being said, the 6750M in the new MacBook Pros are great. Depending on the types of games you're playing and the resolution you're playing at it may be enough.

I've (so far) found the MBP 6750 wipes the floor with my ATI (offical, Not rebrand like PNY) 4850. (same res, 1440x900 for the testing, L4D2+WoW)

The two scores I have seen were ~9400.
