Ivy Bridge, worth the wait?

:cool:I was just wondering if anyone had any information on the new Intel (3rd gen?) cor i7 processors named Ivy Bridge? would it be worth waiting the time between now and early 2012 for the new processors to see how they perform. I have read that they will have an increase on the current second Gen i7 (sandy Bridge) by 20%, by shrinking from 32nm to 22nm. Bringing the high end 17" or 15" 2.3ghz second gen cor i7 to almost 2.8ghz:eek:, now this is a phenomenal number to equate, whether this be a physical 8 cores running or not i dont know? (if someone knows the answer to that that would be great). The battery usage on these prosessors should be amazing as well?

Intel is set to debut the new "Ivy Bridge" in asia around the 4thQ 2011:p, so, with this information looming and new discrete graphics processors now on the market that can pull 70 odd frames per second out of crysis, IN A LAPTOP? i recently found a processor like this in a newly released European laptop (about the size of a large alienware)

also, the question that i think some people wanted to ask was, where was the redesign? im stunned by these numbers and performance ratings in the newly released macbook, but i cant help but think what could only be just around the corner. Ssd as standard, removal of optical drive for optioned extra GPU, battery or doubled SSD with raid and usb3.0 (another apparent advantage from intel with the new Ivy Bridge) and the new release of LION OS that with its innovative interface that has taken some tricks from the IOS may shape a little with what we see in the next NEXT gen macs? the form factor in the macbook air is too much to let go from, and i want to see these technologies and designs take shape in apples other computer devices :D

Also!

i am inquiring to get the 2011 macbook pro 17" (need the extra usb port, bloody stupid there isnt more in this refresh) with the 128 GIG ssd (improved throughput for gaming and overall performance) 2.3gihz processor, 8 gigs of ram, and im tossing between the normal glossy display or the matt finish, does anyone know if the matt finish distorts the screen in any way? :)

Im also planning to take out the optical drive and install another SATA SSD drive for use with raid, although, limiting my collection of movies music and pictures of well over 600 gig to 240 odd ssd hard drive space is cheaper option for speed, but i may have to sell myself to get the larger 500 gig drives. )if anyone knows anywhere that would be able to sell them cheap i would be INDEBTED!, and if anyone knows the cons of doing an operation like this please let me know as i really:D:eek::eek: am keen on doing so, but screwing my $4000 system is not a priority LOL ;)

@ Mealienprobeu
I guess the only thing one will see with ivy bridge is that they will probably run cooler and have higher clock speeds. IPC won't increase very much.
More interesting is the move of GPUs from 40 to 28 nm. That means faster GPUs in cooler thin notebooks.
I have read one review already about the 13" MBP and it seems heat will be a big problem of this 2011 generation. This 2011 gen helps greatly with speed I guess the 2012 gen will be more focused on getting ergonomics back to how they are supposed to be.

Interesting info on the heat in the 2011 13. Have not seen that. U have a link?

Thanks

Can anybody lucky enough to have a new MBP with the 6750M do some quick benchmarks of the Source games on Steam (Portal, Half-Life 2, Left 4 Dead etc) under OS X?

I currently have a previous-generation 15" with the Nvidia 330M and I'm thinking about upgrading if the performance boost to the Valve titles on Steam is good enough. Given that Portal 2 is only a few months away and is likely to be the most demanding Source-powered game so far, I'd like to see the kind of performance I can expect under OS X if I got a new machine...

Left 4 Dead 2 would probably be the best game to test with, given that it's the most recent one. My current machine usually hovers around the 30fps mark, but dips down quite a bit when there are loads of zombies on screen.

That would be awesome, thanks! :)

F1 2010:
built in benchmark

Ultra:
min 18 avg 22

Medium
min 56 avg 64

I actually think I might play it on Medium. On demanding tracks like Monaco it is better to have a min fps as high as possible. On medium I never see the fraps counter below 40.

But then why not wait another while for the next range of processors? But wait, the ones after that will be faster/better too, so maybe wait for them?

If you need it now, get it. Unless you're hemorrhaging money, it's near impossible to have the best technology all the time, especially with Apple stuff. You need to pick somewhere to hop on. I'm hoping to get one of the newly released 15 inch high end ones, and I'm fairly certain it will last me 5-6 years, during which time I'm sure I'll be tempted to buy the newer ones, but you can't always have the best, so face it. A RAM upgrade a year or so down the line, and an SSD instead of the superdrive at some point should ensure these last a long, loooong time.

Crysis Benchmark on Macbook Pro 15" i7 2.3Ghz - 8GB Ram - momentus xt 500gb

Is everyone afraid of running Crysis on very high? ... DX11 is out an Crysis will run without DX10 until you select very high so pleeeeaass, I need comparison to my 2 year old Alienware Notebook and I found this results would be perfect to compare to the new high end 15 MB Pro:

1280x720 and everything on max, pleas  do me this favor :)

2011 macbook pro 6750m over-clocking

surprised nobody messed around and over-clocked the card to squeeze more out of it. 330M was easily over-clocked.

what are the stable numbers for 6750m ? surprise us.

ps: i'm awaiting delivery of 15" 2.3GHz and will OC and test immediately.

judging by prior results i would wager that the MBP 15" with the 6750m would match that score.

what would you recommend for overclocking? I read about overdrive?

Please, for the love of god never OC with OverDrive. Always go with MSI Afterburner.

whoever decides to do the OC should probably find a nice cooling pad because this gen of macbooks are gonna get hot.

Eh, they all run pretty hot.

Hm okay I was hoping the 1GB vs the (crossfire) 2x512MB would get some extra fps... and the 3780 are quite antiquated...

Thank you for your assessment :)

with the old gen. 330M i always had the laptop elevated on a short pieces on cork to increase the distance from the table and increase airflow. that works for me as it's basically a desktop with external monitor. i game with headphones so fan noise is not an issue.

i's been a white, but for AMD graphics - this ?

It's an old game that no one ever plays anymore.

Isnt it possible to overclock directly in the Catalyst Control Center ?
Didnt use an ATI for like 5 years, i guess i am kind of out of the loop :p

You could get a laptop for half the price that achieves the same benchmarks.

I wonder why people spend so much on a mac.
