It looks like Active Trader Pro is their legacy platform and now they call their platform Fidelity Trader+ Desktop. It still lets me download ATP but looks like Fidelity wants people to use their new Trader+ platform. I’ll give ATP a try tonight/tomorrow.

Trader + is in Beta and it's missing a lot of features in ATP. I've run them side-by-side and I keep gravitating back to ATP.

That's what I generally try to do but it's difficult to acquire the hardware to do so.

I'd love to test one of my trading programs on an M4 Studio and M5 MacBook Pro but I'm not going to enter my financial credentials on a computer in a store.
Bloomberg runs relatively well on mbp m4 max but struggles on m1 pro. A ton of performance is lost through emulation through critix viewer.

I won’t receive a replacement until three days later. I need to decide sooner or later.

Get the MacBook for sure.

Most if not all Windows machines have fan noise. I've tried a dozen, including Panther Lake and Lunar Lake. You would think....but it just is. This shouldn't even be a question if your app will run in Parallels well. And that's the thing, everything else is moot.

That’s the question for OP, they mention running CAD and needing Linux. It will depend on what else if anything they use requires Windows and if Win11ARM is sufficient. I was fortunate to be able to run what I need for work in both Win11ARM and Red Hat in Parallels and that made the move from my 2019 Intel MBP to M5 Max an easy decision. The Lunar Lake Dell Latitude work issued runs fans more often in my workflow but they aren’t at an obnoxious 100% like my 2019 MBP. LNL and PTL are much better than previous Intel Core chips but agree that there is still fan noise compared to M5 Pro which usually doesn’t kick on fans until a sustained workload is initiated.

P.S. OP you can purchase a one-time license of Parallels if you don’t need more than 4 CPU cores or 8GB for your VMs. If you need more cores and memory allocation then you need the Parallels business subscription. That said, I have a feeling you need more than 4-core/8GB since you would run CAD in Parallels.

Windows and CAD via Parallels work fine. Haven’t tried Linux via Parallels. I had a MacBook Pro M5 Pro black. It looked good but under strong light, very very ugly. So I returned awhile ago and ordered the silver one damaged by UPS.

I didn’t see noticeable difference bewteen 8GB and 12GB assignment to VM. Given that it has 24GB. Why not half half? That means I need the Parallels Pro. I read bad things about auto renewal being more expensive and the company refused to refund. Can we turn it off and buy a Pro version at discounted price each year?

I have always liked having both laptops if one has to be repaired then I have a backup some people have 2 or 3 of the same OS I like having Apple,Windows and Linux but I do find myself depending on Apple while the others are just something to tinker with.

I've seen other YTs from him, I do like him, and I think the M5 Pro is an excellent machine, though thanks to apple's price increases, its not something I'd be considering
I am not considering any new laptop for the forseeable future. If my system dies, I am getting another motherboard to fix it. If the prices return to normal (which they won't, capitalism 101) I will get a new one then. Until....I am keeping the old iron alive.

I have always had a backup laptop. I had my 2015 MacBook Pro 15 as my backup for my 2021 MacBook Pro 16 and now have the Yoga and MacBook Pro 16 as my laptops. I take the Yoga outside the house but use both laptops at home.

I have three systems on the desktop and use them cooperatively as in a cluster but any single computer can run my workflow individually except for video editing which I only do on macOS.

16” Windows laptops comparable to the MacBook Pro are using OLED which would have burn in sooner or later. Is this a strong reason to stay with the MacBook Pro?

Burn in is not so much of an issue anymore, and the new Macbook pro ultra super max elite is coming with an OLED touchscrenn too. They finally got the memo.

Have you used a laptop with an OLED screen for years? I still hear that laptop users with an OLED screen still have this issue so there is a concern.

If I am keeping this M5 Pro MacBook Pro 16" when it is delivered, this will probably be the last MacBook Pro I buy unless there are features that future dead silent Windows laptops don't have. After hearing all those rumors about the Ultra super max elite last week, I agreed the saying that Apple is dead with Steve. Hope the new CEO will do better in innovative hardware and software like the Steve's Era.

Apple used tandem OLED screens in their iPad Pros and no one has reported the issue of burn that I am aware of.
I have not been following but I also have not heard the issue. However, iPad OS and MacOS have different UI. For example, there is no top static taskbar in iPad OS.

True but depending on what app is opened and how long there are static info but you have valid point unless you constantly put it in full screen which hides the taskbar.

You are basically getting what Ternus wants now anyways. He was the head of hardware.

Do you mean those up-coming laptops with RTX Spark? It seems that they are powered by an ARM-based Nvidia Grace CPU rather than an Intel or AMD CPU. So, there could be problems running Linux?
The Nvidia ARM systems normally run Linux, wouldn't expect any issues there.

OLED has been around long enough that it shouldn't be a problem. I hang out on the Lenovo subreddit and I've not heard of one case of OLED burn in. Hinge and other issues? Sure. Lots of them. The MacBook subreddits have lots of flexgate cases. My Yoga has an OLED screen and I'm not concerned at all about the issue.

My ATP benchmark results. Start is the benchmark and lower is better. You can see the penalty for macOS vs Intel on the same system with the 2015 MacBook Pro 15.

What do you mean?
I mean John Ternus who is incoming CEO was the lead of all hardware since Johnny too cool for school was fired...ahem, I mean 'left' Apple. So most of the hardware design, choices etc including the design of the new MBP Ultra was all his doing. There will be no going back to older designs.

How much actual speed difference is there between your 10700 and the 9900x in doing the actual work? How much actual time is saved by the newer system?

It's not my 9900x nor my 14900HX. I just borrowed the 9900x to run the test and that was it.

The important part of running the program is repainting the screen and responsiveness in entering trades. The startup time is a proxy for that as it's basically doing the work to setup the display windows and populate them. I do not have a way of measuring responsiveness but I know what it feels like when it is responsive.

That an M1 Max Studio takes twice as long to startup as a 2015 MacBook Pro running Windows indicates a sizable performance penalty for WINE and Rosetta 2.

Ok, so it's not like pushing large amounts of data through the system at once, it's more graphics and responsiveness you are looking for.
