Tested standby/sleep twice.

First time still had 10% loss. Changed all the settings I could find in terminal pmset. Logs showed a lot of darkwakes.

Second time much better. A little over 5% but for a full 14h period. Only two wakes during the sleep period.

Now testing shutdown mode to verify any loss over the next 12h.

12 hrs is not enough as it has already been determined that discharge rate is not linear and it may discharge 2% in the first 12 hrs and much less afterwards. Give it at least 48 hrs if you can.

For a period of 15h the loss was close to the standby mode, or 5%. Way more than I imagined.

I don’t specifically care about the loss after 3-4 days. I’m trying to replicate normal usage while traveling and bustling from one client to another over the week. If I have battery loss in standby between meetings and overnight I lose battery (in both sleep mode and shutdown) the effective battery is always lower than 100% given these losses outside regular use.

Hi,

Thank you for your feedback.

Is there anything connected to your mac during the test period (charger, external screen, mouse, ...)?

5% for 14h is more than mine (6% for 24h). What Mac model do you have?

Nothing connected.

MBP 13” 2016 TB 8gb base model

My last standby battery test

12h standby = almost 7% lost

Better than before config/setup changes (via terminal/pmset) close to 15% for the same 12h but far from ideal IMO

Just a quick update, I've done more testing on my 2016 MBP and over 14 days it lost 9% due to self-discharge (complete shutdown, wifi & bluetooth off).

From 55% to to 46% in 2 weeks.

Since there are widespread issues with 2016 keyboards and keyboards scratching screens as well I just decided to purchase AppleCare from Adorama for $190, RadTech keyboard cover for $12 and enjoy the machine for the next 2+ years and then sell it when my AppleCare is up. If issues persist I can fix them under AppleCare or demand a new MBP (if stuff breaks repeatedly).

When I bought this MBP last year I thought I would keep it for 5-6 years but now I guess I am gonna have to wait for 2018-2019 model and see if all the issues plaguing 2016-2017 models would be resolved by then.

Thanks for the feedback. 9% loss over 2 weeks is acceptable.

It’s not like one would shutdown a MacBook when it’s at 10-15% battery level and not put it to be charged for the next 2 weeks.... and on top of that, assume it would have any usable battery life without a charger.

Same problem with my MacBook Pro late 2016, losing %5 every 24h when switched off, really disappointed with this expensive machine.

Anyone tried turning off Lidwake function?

My standby/sleep drain is almost identical to shutdown drain as others have reported... close to 10% for a 24h period.

Testing with Lidwake 0 (off) for my next 24h cycle... using my old MBA while I test my MBP

Same for me, no change with lidwake on or off.

Hi,

I think your MacBook is a non Touch Bar model, no?

I remember that the Genius guy who tested my machine said that the non Touch Bar battery discharge was less important than mine. He said that, "perhaps", one or more Touch Bar component (like the T1 processor) could be responsible of the battery drain in shutdown mode.

A friend of mine tested his MPB 2016 TB and got the same results as me (6% discharge / 24h). On another forum, a member said that the 2017 model has the same behaviour.

I'm steell waiting for a reply from AppleCare (tomorow normally).

Hi,

i have the same problem with my MacBook Pro Late 2016 TB.
2-5% a Day lost when my MacBook ist completly shutdown. 5-15% when it is in sleepmode.
I hope HighSierra will fix this problem :(

I took my MacBook Pro 2016 non-touchbar to Apple for this same reason. I am losing approximately 2 percent a day. They sent my laptop away to be diagnosed and they ended up replacing my top case with battery.

I now have a new battery on my laptop and the issue still remains. From 9/7 to 9/12 I didn't turn on my computer due to hurricane irma. It had 96% left on 9/7 when shut down completely. On 9/12 it had 85%.

I've had this laptop since November last year and I don't recall having this drain issue while shut down until recently. Could this somehow be software related?

I am reluctant to take it back again because I feel this is not something new hardware can fix based on the posts I am seeing here.

Is there a link to the forums where it mentions the 2017 MacBook pros having the same issue?

Hi,

I saw your comment in another thread on Apple Discussion forum. :)

Here is the link for the 2017 MBP: https://discussions.apple.com/message/32185294?ac_cid=op123456#32185294

Hi

I was googling MacBook Pro nTB battery problems and saw this page.

I bought my MBP 2017 nTB (base model with 256gb storage) less than 2 weeks ago. Have been using it since then and been tracking the battery life for the past week.

Realised that when I put the MBP 2017 to sleep with 100% battery life, when I start it the next day (less than 24 hrs later), the battery life averages at 75-80% (i.e. an average of 20-25% decrease in battery life during sleep mode).

I do not have Power Nap turned on so I have no idea what's causing the battery drain. Bluetooth is not turned on either. Only app that wasn't completely closed was Microsoft Word. I've tried shutting down all apps and putting it to sleep mode at 100% but the next day the battery life was also at 80%. Current battery cycle count is at 4.

Had the MBP retina (late 2012, base model with 128gb storage) for 5 years. Battery cycle count at 730+. Battery life does not drain during sleep mode even with 5 Word documents, 2 Google Chrome windows with multiple tabs and a couple of pdf files in Preview open. Maybe about 5% at the most.

100% battery life, MBP 2012 in sleep mode with applications not closed, go for class some 14 hours later, lift the lid to wake the MBP and battery life is at 97%.

On the other hand, 100% battery life, MBP nTB 2017 in sleep mode with applications closed, lift the lid to wake the MBP the next morning and battery life is at 80%.

I've talked to one of the guys at Apple support over the phone and he was of no help at all. Kept referring me to this page even though I told him I've read them all and could not find the solution hence the call:
https://support.apple.com/en-sg/HT204054 (About Mac notebook batteries)

Then he sent me a few other articles (which were of no use too):
https://support.apple.com/en-sg/HT203184 (See how apps affect Mac performance, battery runtime, temperature and fan activity)
https://support.apple.com/en-sg/HT201255 (Start up key combinations for Mac)
https://support.apple.com/en-sg/HT202731 (How to use Apply diagnostics on your Mac)

He said there's no issue with my battery...

100% to 80% battery life in less than 24hours in sleep mode... That Aussie guy on the phone still thinks there's no issue with the battery?

I'm going to bring my MBP 2017 back to the Apple Store tomorrow and see what they say. Couldn't make an appointment so I'm just going to walk in.

Use terminal to check what events are waking up your computer while sleeping. There are a bunch of threads about the subject.

All in all MacBooks will still drain battery while sleeping (or even shutdown) but not at 20% overnight. 4-5% is a good target. Keep in mind the drain is not linear so 3 days should drain close to 10% not 15%.

Hi,

After several calls with Apple Care, the engineering answer was always the same: the 5% / 24h discharge when the computer is completely off is the expected behaviour !

But good news...

After updating to High Sierra this monday, my MacBook Pro didn't discharge when off since 3 days ! 0% / 24 h !

Contrary to what Apple says, there was indeed a bug with Sierra.

I'm going to do some test in sleep mode now.

Hi,

I confirm that my battery is not draining (or negligible) in shutdown mode: for example, 80% when turning off and 80% when booting 24 hour later. I lose 1% in the first two minutes of use but I think it is the cost of booting.

I ran some tests in sleep mode by disabling TCPKeepAlive: 3% per 24h battery discharge.

I've been following this thread with keen interest. I have a MBP Retina 13" 2016 model, and I've been getting awful battery life plus noticeable drainage while the machine is completely powered down. For instance, I went on an overseas trip with the MBP fully charged... but about five or six days later when I turned on the machine, the battery was completely drained.

Also, I've been doing some experiments at home, and have noticed nearly a 400 mAh power discharge per day from this fully powered-down Mac. That's about a 7% self-discharge per day.

I'm hesitant to just take it in to the Genius Bar after reading the posts here... but I feel like this is a premium machine that I paid a lot of money for, and I'm simply not content with the machine discharging fully after less than a week of non-use.

I did take note of Pulpe's post regarding an improvement after upgrading to High Sierra. I will give that a try before going any further with Apple Support. It would be a waste of time to take this machine in and do a repair or swap, and find that the same problem exists in a brand-new machine or with newly replaced batteries.

Thanks, Pulpe. I've having much better performance on High Sierra. I haven't done anything like leaving the Mac asleep for several days, and my testing intervals are between one–two days, but I can definitely say that the upgrade to High Sierra has given a marked improvement in battery power when the computer is off.

For the record, here's what I have found so far:

# 2017.11.17 (Friday)
Unplugged adapter today after fully charging with power off for three days.

# 2017.11.18 (Saturday)
Powered on. Charge info as follows:
Charge Remaining (mAh): 3700
 Fully Charged: No
 Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 4094
The battery meter reads 93%, with 1:36 battery power remaining… it should be nearly full, as I charged it for three full days with power off!

# 2017.11.19 (Sunday) 10:29
Powered on, deleted Sierra and installed High Sierra. The battery meter after recharge is 100% (of course), with a 4172 mAh charge remaining.

# 2017.11.20 (Monday) 15:31
Powered on. Battery level is still at 100% (showed 99% at startup, but 100% when finally getting to desktop), with a 3983 mAh charge remaining.

# 2017.11.22 (Wednesday) 15:52
Powered on. (Recharged battery yesterday, after some hours of use on Monday.) Battery level is still at 100% with a 3840 mAh charge remaining.
