- I'll bet you the 2020 also gets a higher score. So why is it a problem that the fans spin at max RPM in a test that's designed precisely to put the machine under maximum load?

It does. But it is negligible. I could reliniquish those extra points for less heat and noise ;)

Here are my scores:

MBP2020, i5, Cinebench R20
CPU: 1873
CPU (Single Core): 414

MBP2018, i5, Cinebench R20
CPU: 1739

MBP2018, i5, Geekbench 5.1.1
Single Core: 909
Multi-Core: 3990
Graphics: 6952

MBP2020, i5, Geekbench 5.1.1
Single Core: 1163
Multi-Core: 4415
Graphics: 9674

I got my MacBook Pro 13" base with 16GB on Friday. Together with the MBA i7/16/256.

Im a little disappointed in the Performance of the Pro. Just 1588/380 in Cinebench R20. The Air got 1134/370. In practice I don't really feel any difference in speed. But still its odd, I didn't see anyone scoring that low on a Mac Pro 13" 2020 Base.

That Feels about right for a base pro. I assume you mean the 8th gen? Surely the air being the same or more expensive than the pro this is a good result?

Yes the 8th gen. The air is 50€ cheaper, but the Pro is definitely worth the extra bucks (Brighter display, Touch Bar, speakers). I was just expecting to see better results, after reading about the 2019 MBP. But I guess it is fine for me, as I probably would get along with the MBA i3/16 too.

That air configured is more expensive than the pro here in the UK.

the air is actually £50 more!

Depends which 2019 MBP you were looking at. The 4TB version did score higher in CineBench

That is not negligible.
Single core almost 30% improvement.
Graphics almost 40%.
Cinebench will always be a poor performer without a dgpu/egpu

Would have saved quite a lot going base model air

Yes, but when spending that much € on a f*****g Laptop I prefer to spend more just to have some leeway. Apples pricing model just makes me want more, while always feeling to have too few. I guess that's there goal...

As for single-core and graphics performance, I agree with you. However, the fans primarily spin up in multi-core scenarios, such as my C++ development work.
With the new model, I have a performance gain of roughly 7% in multi-core. To be honest, I don't really notice it. But the fans spin up way faster now. That is something I notice. ;)

It's odd because you'd think with it having a dual fan setup, air vents on either side of the case and a thinner newer 10nm CPU that it would be quieter and cooler than the 8th gen 2020 model?

Has anyone compared fan noise between the 8th gen 2020 MBP 13" and the 10th gen MBP 13'' 2020?

I have watched half dozen videos comparing the 2. It seems depending on the YouTuber and what day it is they flip flop the recommendations.

I think there is a chance that Apple could put out some updates for the new Gen 10 series to make improvements. If they think that is necessary?

My comparison is
2018 2.3 GHz i5 (dual fan) 8th gen 14nm
versus
2020 2.0 GHz i5 (dual fan) 10th gen 10nm

Upgrading after two years, I did not expect to see a degradation in terms of noise and temperatures.

It's worrying really that 2 years later on Intel have barely improved things at all and it feels like the gains they've made have come at the expense of increased power drain, heat and fan noise.

This has pretty much been intel for the last decade. This is why Apple is likely taking chips in house in the long term.

Yeah, I actually suspect Apple reusing 8th gen processors in the 2020 MacBook was a warning shot at Intel that they need to up their game or they're out the door.

Given the performance of ARM chips keeps increasing exponentially, doubling every few years, and Intel struggle to make a 20% jump in the same time frame it's hard to see a future for x86 in laptops.

Upgraded from a Late 2016 nTB (i5/16GB DDR3/512GB SSD) to a 2020 13" (10th Gen i5/16GB DDR4/1TB SSD). Been using it for a few days and am absolutely loving it so far, here are a few first impressions:

- Thing is just as silent as my Late 2016 nTB MBP while being noticeably faster. Few times the fans have spun up they've been very quiet even at 4000-5000 RPM.

- Thermals are good, no complaints so far. Feel Apple is doing great work on this front given what intel is giving them to work with.

- Thermals in clamshell mode (connected through my Caldigit TS3 dock) do seem to rise faster than non-clamshell mode which is curious, but not enough to be a worry.

- Love the extra TB3 ports, being able to charge my computer on both sides is so nice compared to my old machine!

- Keyboard is an absolute dream to type on compared to the old butterfly keyboard.

So yeah, loving this machine and will definitely be keeping it. Was concerned about thermals based on some early reports here but that has proven to not be an issue for me, though ymmv of course.

Thanks for the feedback. So many conflicting reports!

Think I'm gonna take a punt on the same model as yourself and order it from Apple. Worst case if the fan noise is an issue I can always return it!

Truthfully, after using the machine for a few days I find complaints about fan noise on the 2020 13" interesting. They're pretty close to inaudible until 4000 - 5000rpm and even at 4k+rpm they're still very quiet and not something I'd say is a bother (any audio being played through the speakers easily drowns out the fans at higher RPM).

To each their own of course, but IMO people seem to forget nothing is perfect and there's always room for improvement. Given intel's situation the fact we have a current gen quad-core in a 13" chassis, solid thermals and low noise in one package is pretty damn nice.

Fair enough on noticing the noise. It's my number one consideration too.
Comparing geekbench scores, the multi-core improvement is more like 11% not 7%.
Cinebench is really for more graphical comparison which development/compiling isn't really utilising.

The new 10nm seem to get hotter. It is strange (and disappointing) that the dual fan setup isn't quieter though.

If you belong to Costco the Gen 10 is in stock. $1749 and Apple care + is $214 and you get 90 day returns, free 2nd year warranty. It’s a great deal vs direct from Apple.
How long did it take for yours to arrive? I ordered on Friday with an estimated delivery date of 5/27 but it hasn’t shipped yet and with coronavirus not sure if that date is realistic.

What about the trackpad and force rich clicks?

is it my imagination or is it louder on the new 10th generation CPU variant ?

I just checked: When running Cinebench, the GFX clock (as shown in Intel Power Gadget) does not rise.
Therefore, it is a good CPU-only test.
In comparison to Geekbench, Cinebench taxes the CPU more consistently (at max) and for a longer period of time. Therefore, thermal limitations influence the benchmark results much more than in Geekbench, which profits from high turbo boost clocks that can't be maintained for a longer period of time.

What is the maximum power drawer you see on the 10nm? The 10nm GPU will only draw a maximum of circa 70% due to power considerations.
What is your hypothesis on what is happening regarding thermals?
Are you thinking of going to the 8th Gen since GPU isn't a requirement?
