Ha. I don’t remember mine being choppy. I have the same. But definitely temps ramped right up. Maybe lost a few frames.

New i5/16/1TB. Just loaded this morning. I think the fans spin up quite often and it's very noticeable. Certainly doing any kind of programming (say Android Studio) and with photo app. Can't really tell temp or fan speed yet because istat Menu doesn't have temperature or fan sensors yet.

This one is much louder than any other MBP I have had. If it stays this loud it's going back.
Mine was like that the first day, then it went away.

Bjango (iStat menus dev) said on Twitter that a new version/beta with support for 2020 models should be ready in the next couple of weeks.

Thanks for the Monity recommendation, I hadn't heard about it before.

Edit: I see that the last version on the Mac App Store is a year old, is this still being actively supported?

I've had it before I got this Mac but it seems to work fine that I can tell. I've tweaked what it's showing a bit as you can customise it but it's getting the temp / fans and such which iStat Menus doesn't.

Good that they are getting an update for that out soon. I don't own that though and don't check these things too often so Monity might cover all I need here.

Well it's just a temp setup today as my 5700 XT should come tomorrow and I've got a Razor Core X ready for it to go into. I have an old Lenovo USB C dock I've been using because it's got Ethernet on it and I prefer to be wired when at my desk. That dock does have 2 x Display Ports on it however I suspect it'll mirror them because it's probably using MST which Apple don't support. Maybe I'll try it quickly at some point just to see.

Anyway today then I've got both screens on USB C into the right side of the laptop and the Lenovo dock with keyboard, mouse, headset and Ethernet on the left. So using 3 of the 4 ports. Obviously the screens themselves have some ports but literally they turned up during working and I couldn't wait but needed to get them up and running quickly.

Excellent thanks for the info, this is what I want to do, use two ports on one side, each with a monitor. Someone else was saying you could only plug into two monitors on USB-C if you have one going to each side, which I dont want to do as it wouldnt look clean.

Got mine today base model in Australia. Haven’t used it much but love the keyboard even though I’ve had the butterfly keyboard on my 12 inch since 2015 without issue. The new one is much nicer to type on.

Also haven’t heard the fan fire up yet, so that makes me happy, it seems the 8th gen runs cooler than the 10th gen in the air. So coming from a 12 inch 2015 it’s a major upgrade to me.
Did you import your user data and ID?
I am concerned about importing from HIgh Sierra on an older MacBook Air 11" to the new MBP 13 running Catalina over WiFi. The old MBA has the user data and ID and I have all my extra stuff, photos, etc. on an external HD that is connected via USB - A, so using a cable to get that extra data transfered could be dangerous depending on the cable, or USB-C to USB-a adapter.
Has anyone done the data transfer via WiFi?

So far, so happy with mine. Got an i5/16/1TB last week. A very noticeable step up from my old iMac.

A week with mine now, and I'm liking it more and more. Now that the initial background processes (indexing, photos download / upload) are all done it's a total delight to use.

Usage so far is a mixture of Xcode, Remote Desktop, and a quick iMovie project.

I noticed Amazon UK has the 13" Pro model up for not much more than the UK Apple store and they have it available for next day delivery rather than the 2 weeks Apple state.

Is there any downside to buying it from Amazon rather than Apple directly?

For any newcomers to the current models, if you're wanting to investigate what can be done with the TouchBar, including haptic feedback, check out BetterTouchTool and presets like GoldenChaos.

Possibly.

Apple's return policy is 100% refund, no restocking fees or other fees, and no hassle. You have 14 days to initiate a return, then you have 14 days from the date you initiated the return to ship the item back to Apple.

I don't know what Amazon's return policy is in the U.K., but in the U.S. it appears to involve a 15% restocking fee for opened computers. I copied this from U.S. Amazon's return policy page:
  • New desktop, laptops, or tablets (excluding Kindle E-readers and Fires) purchased from Amazon.com that didn't start when they arrived, arrived in damaged condition, or is still in an unopened box can be returned for a full refund within 30 days of purchase.
  • Amazon.com may test computers that are returned because they didn't start when they arrived and impose a customer fee equal to 15 percent of the product sales price if the customer misrepresents the condition of the product.
I'd encourage you to verify the U.K. Amazon return policy for computers before making your final purchase decision.

Good luck.

That's a good point. Maybe safer buying it direct from Apple plus it does save about $50 even though it looks like there's a two week lead time.

Especially as I'm see a lot of folk complaining about fan noise on the 10th generation 13" MBP which is worrying me....

For what it's worth: I received mine 3 days after ordering even though at time of order it said delivery expected in about 2 weeks. YMMV. And, I've had no problems with fan noise on mine (the 4-port model with 10th gen processor), except a little while on the first day I had it (due to indexing, downloading many gigs of data, installing hundreds of programs...)

Not sure if its due to COVID-19 or if Apple underestimated the demand for the new 13 inch. The shipping date has now moved to June 8 for the 10th Gen.

Same experience. Under load, temperatures reach 100°C within seconds. So in comparison to my previous 2018 MBP Quad Core i5, the fans spins up way faster. They also sound worse.
As an example: In Cinebench R20, the 2020 model's fans spin up to the max RPM (after a short amount of time). The 2018 model does not even get to that point before finishing the benchmark.

At least when idling, the system stays cool with the fans being turned off most of the time.

Overall, I am disappointed.

Edit: I installed Turbo Boost Switcher (Pro) to get the fans under control. Works quite well. Still a lot of performance with the 2.0Ghz base clock.

I bought mine through John Lewis. They currently have many configurations in stock for next day delivery. You get the standard 1 year Apple Warranty + a John Lewis warranty for the second year, so 2 years in total. Prices are the same as buying direct from Apple.

Has anyone purchased the base model 13" with 8th gen and upgraded the memory?

- I'll bet you the 2020 also gets a higher score. So why is it a problem that the fans spin at max RPM in a test that's designed precisely to put the machine under maximum load?

Be happy that Apple have implemented a proper cooling system for the more powerful CPU and GPU in the high-end model.

One year people are complaining about thermal throttling and then the next year people are complaining about the fans making too much noise under maximum load xD

Good point. Although people lost their absolute bobbins over the macbook air's fan coming on under benchmarking loads so maybe people just a quick to whinge
