I would imagine the results could be even closer if the memory was increased on the base model.
I would even go further: i5 Air does have the same GPU and clock speeds as $1799 MBP. If only Air had a proper cooling, then it would have been almost on par with higher end MBP 13 and most of the folks wouldn't be willing to spend extra $700.

I think they're quite different processors though 10th gen in the Air has a max watt of 9-15 TDP I think whilst the MBP has a 25 TDP that spikes to up to 40 watts

Yeah, that would be quite a bit of a struggle on how to divide watt usage between the CPU and GPU. But Air i5 also has spikes up to 25W. So it definitely lacks proper cooling to sustain that.

I think you are right. The Air cooling was designed for the TDP it has in it. I also have an Air and it works perfectly well. I don't do long time-consuming work tasks on it, but for what it's designed for it's brilliant (and very fast)

if my usage is ms office, netflix and using chrome with 10 tabs opened in the background . base unit is it more than suffice?

Correct, more than enough.

If you can justify spending the extra $100 for the extra ram, might come in handy in the long run.

Sorry you're right - the price difference isn't $500 but rather £500 (£1,299.00 vs. £1,799).
That's what the benchmarks have been comparing.

GPU performance of the 10th gen there can be no argument. My workflow doesn't utilise it a lot however. Having a 5/6k monitor might be nice though! o_O:cool:

Difference isn’t that high either as the higher model with the 10th comes with more memory (and faster), a larger SSD and two more Thunderbolt ports.

The Air has a 10W processor that goes up to 12W. The 15W processors can sustain 25W.

Do you notice any difference in SSD speed with normal use? The MBP apparently has a much faster SSD which not many people are talking about.

Probably not many people talking about it because not many people notice any difference.

Sure - you are right - but we were talking Benchmarks and even with the less memory the 8th Gen is doing comparable in real-world and benchmarking performance.

Yes, actually I tested both the 8th Gen and the 10th Gen:
Is this comparing like-for-like ? i.e. 512GB vs. 512GB ? The 256GB will be slower due to the bus.

Purchased 2020 Macbook Pro 13 10th gen i5/16GB/512GB SSD base higher series on monday.

Returned Surface Pro X, did not go with 2020 MacBook Air due to what I read about heat, fan noise.

I find the touch bar handy.

I am using a 2020 Sony X800H 43" 4K as external monitor..., internal screen not being used , using evri usb c to 4K/60Hz HDMI adapter instead of air play 2

Is it normal for CPU:52.43C GPU:51.00C Fan #1 3102RPM, FAN # 2 3275 RPM

Can not hear the fan's if mute audio

Watching on demand TV on one tab, typing on this forum 2nd tab, browser Microsoft Edge with these readings from Fanny, this is after running 6 hours tv shows and using browser

also hot day 34C outside 29C inside

Thanks for sharing your experience!

I have had my 10th gen i7/16/512 since Friday (5/22) and am really enjoying it. This is a replacement for my personal mid-2013 MacBook Air 11.6", which I still really love (especially the form factor) but that laptop is showing its age. There is quite a massive difference in performance between the two, obviously. The old Air can be easily lagged while the new laptop is just smooth as butter no matter what. I am running a 3440x1440 ultrawide and everything is very fast.

My primary work laptop is an early 2015 MacBook Pro 13" i7/16/512 and the there is a substantial difference between this 2020 MBP and it as well. I've been using the 2020 for work this week and it's so much smoother. My typical daily workload induces lag in the 2015 MBP fairly frequently, but the new laptop has none of that. I believe that jump from a dual core to a quad core is substantial.

The keyboard in the 2020 is great, somehow feels better than the ones in those other two laptops, perhaps more clicky/tactile/stable, but maybe that's just because it's new. And it's definitely miles better than the butterfly keyboard in my other work laptop (2017 MBP 15"). I always hated the way that keyboard feels, even if you could get past the reliability issues it has.

I believe the only times I've heard the fans spin up is in Google Meet video calls in Chrome, but I generally avoid using Chrome otherwise, and the laptop is silent otherwise.

My only complaint with this is, of course, the camera. It's just bad for such an expensive laptop. I read about people saying the camera is worse than on older laptops and I thought they must be exaggerating, but, they might be right. I think the camera on the 2015 MBP looks better than in the 2020. I just don't know why that would be. I'm hoping it's a software issue and not a hardware issue.

Still extremely happy with my purchase. It's fast, it's small, it's quiet, it's light. It's perfect for what I need it.

Will you be able to use the 2020 to replace your 2017, as well? The jump from dual-core to quad-core was very significant. I have the Ice Lake i5/16/512 (ordered 5/4, got it 5/7), and it is a big step-up from the 2020 i7 Air (which i briefly owned).
