INITIAL THOUGHTS after ~5 hours on the base model 2020 10th gen i5/16gb/512 MBP, which is replacing a 2015 15" i7/16gb/256 MBP...
  • My use case...
    • I'm a software company CEO, so am running mostly business apps, communication tools and browser based apps in Chrome
  • The following apps are always open...
    • Chrome w/ 6+ tabs of heavy content/live data (Domo, Google Docs apps, Salesforce, other)
    • Local applications of MS Office (Excel, Word, PPT, OneNote)
    • Comms tools (Slack, Zoom)
    • Zen time (Spotify and Apple News)
  • Performance...
    • Not a single lag, hiccup or fan heard as of yet
    • I full screen most applications and am very active on the trackpad in terms of 'flicking' between screens; no perceptible lag or stutter at all in doing that; super snappy
    • With all of the aforementioned programs open, iStat shows ~6gb of memory available, with 13mb disk swapping so far
    • Very slight warmth on the bottom of the laptop
  • Other thoughts...
    • It is a delight to be back to a smaller size and weight laptop; loved the 2015 for its power, but it was a riot shield to carry around
    • Typical (excellent) Apple chassis; a premium, solid feel that is very well balanced when carrying; perfect lid hinge motion and tension
    • I like the Touch Bar so far and look forward to some tweaking in BetterTouchTool
    • Brilliant screen; nice to have True Tone on a laptop
    • Since I am coming from a 2015 MBP, the keyboard feels mostly the same with maybe a different sound and slightly tighter feel (ie, less wiggle)
    • Wow the speakers blow my old MBP away; really appreciate the great sound from modern laptops
For now, I'm very happy with this machine and believe I can get ~5 years with it as I did with my previous MBP. I may circle back over time with more thoughts as I add in a monitor and wireless peripherals to complete a workstation.

Hope this review gives a little bit back to the great community here that helped me make the decision between the 16" or the 13" (thanks folks!).

Will you be able to use the 2020 to replace your 2017, as well? The jump from dual-core to quad-core was very significant. I have the Ice Lake i5/16/512 (ordered 5/4, got it 5/7), and it is a big step-up from the 2020 i7 Air (which i briefly owned).

No, the 2017 is client-owned, so I get what I get, but I also don't need to put that laptop through the same workload that I do the 2015 (and, now the 2020).

Ordered in April and arriving July? That's quite a lead time.. ;):p

I have had my 10th gen i7/16/512 since Friday (5/22) and am really enjoying it. This is a replacement for my personal mid-2013 MacBook Air 11.6", which I still really love (especially the form factor) but that laptop is showing its age. There is quite a massive difference in performance between the two, obviously. The old Air can be easily lagged while the new laptop is just smooth as butter no matter what. I am running a 3440x1440 ultrawide and everything is very fast.

My primary work laptop is an early 2015 MacBook Pro 13" i7/16/512 and the there is a substantial difference between this 2020 MBP and it as well. I've been using the 2020 for work this week and it's so much smoother. My typical daily workload induces lag in the 2015 MBP fairly frequently, but the new laptop has none of that. I believe that jump from a dual core to a quad core is substantial.

The keyboard in the 2020 is great, somehow feels better than the ones in those other two laptops, perhaps more clicky/tactile/stable, but maybe that's just because it's new. And it's definitely miles better than the butterfly keyboard in my other work laptop (2017 MBP 15"). I always hated the way that keyboard feels, even if you could get past the reliability issues it has.

I believe the only times I've heard the fans spin up is in Google Meet video calls in Chrome, but I generally avoid using Chrome otherwise, and the laptop is silent otherwise.

My only complaint with this is, of course, the camera. It's just bad for such an expensive laptop. I read about people saying the camera is worse than on older laptops and I thought they must be exaggerating, but, they might be right. I think the camera on the 2015 MBP looks better than in the 2020. I just don't know why that would be. I'm hoping it's a software issue and not a hardware issue.

Still extremely happy with my purchase. It's fast, it's small, it's quiet, it's light. It's perfect for what I need it.
Thanks for sharing! I have ordered the 8th Gen. There's a few 10th Gen around the workplace and they seem very very 'snappy'. I haven't noticed massive improvement in some of the longer tasks so decided to save my money as it comes out of my pocket. I have ordered a 10th Gen for use in the office though so look forward to comparing!
100% concur on the keyboard! I have a 2018 15" MBP and other than being too large to be portable, the keyboard was truly an achievement in absolute awfulness! :)

Perfect machine for me. I'm a "working" IT Manager.

Working from home, it's mostly docked with a CalDigit TS3+ dock, Razer Core enclosure with RX 5700 XT GPU connected to two 4K Dell P2715Q monitors, Logitech MX Master 3 mouse and keyboard (using USB dongle connected to the dock), and Apple Magic Trackpad 2 connected via bluetooth. I don't run clamshell mode - MacBook is my 3rd monitor. One dedicated active TB3 cable going to the eGPU connected on the left side, one dedicated passive TB3 cable going to the TS3 dock connected on the right side.

After indexing/photo sync/etc. - no fans, runs super quiet. Fans can get loud especially when Windows VM is updating, but otherwise don't come on very often (esppecially after initial setup.) I typically have my Windows 10 VM running, Microsoft Teams, Tweetbot, MatterMost client, Telegram, Zoom, Terminal running various things, Mail (personal), MS Outlook (work) and Safari ... everything spread across the three monitors.

Only Benchmarks ran so far is Geekbench 5.1 Metal Compute to test the eGPU config ... docked with the eGPU + 5700 XT - getting ~47000 (Metal) scores.

3.1Lbs sitting here comfortably on my lap now undocked ... damn I love this keyboard. Screen is pristine. Super portable/compact machine.

Very happy with my purchase.

SOunds a nice setup. Given you have a eGPU, any reason you went with the 10th Gen?

It was in stock at B&H and I wanted it fast... my primary need is 16GB RAM for that VM I always run. If they had one of the 2020 8th gen models with 16GB, I probably would have opted for that. Didn't want to wait until sometime in June, basically. :D

what is a B&H?
Haha not waiting is more than a fair enough reason! :)

Waiting is painful for me, especially with Apple stuff. 😉

B & H Photo Video out of NY City... authorized Apple supplier with fast shipping. Bhphoto.com
SO PAINFUL! Haha I have other macs but somehow this is more important cos I don't exactly know how the 8th gen is going to work out for me!
I haven't heard of this photo place but I'm not in the states.
Enjoy that new MBP!

Literally saying, you pay $500 more for higher base to get overall 25-30% improvement. For me it is no big deal to save $500, since i only appreciate paying $200 for ssd upgrade from 512 to 1 tb ssd. So 256gb to 512gb for $200 is already included in the price of higher base 13.
I hope you went with 16gb of RAM on the base?
All in all, perfomance of the CPU have not changed since quad-core MBP 13 2018 models. Higher base 2018 13 inch is on par with 2020 13 inch, except 2020 has a little bit better GPU (+20%?).

That is a really "gem" place and very famous outside of US for it's international shipping. Not so much of US stores offer international shipping. Assuming it is popular overseas - means that it has competitive pricing even with shipping cost incurred.

It's more like $650 difference in my locale for all sorts of reasons like tax and duties. I have access to 10th gen and the 8th gen at the agency and as said didn't find it much faster on some of the longer tasks. The 8th gen seems comparable and that's with 8GB memory. It was definitely much faster than my 2018 MBP at launching some apps - and single core activities. I have a mac pro for longer exports so will just use that. There's also egpu's about too (but not at home ☹️)
I have to pay for my own home equipment as a contractor so unless it's making me more productive, I see if as a business expense and go for the cheapest option. I did upgrade to 16GB memory so it might be even closer in performance to the 10th gen! In saying that I don't keep my macs for longer than 3 financial years and depreciate them off the books as it's all tax deductible. So if you're keeping them for more like 5 years + can see the value in going for a more expensive model. However unless you're using it to make money I think maybe the Air would be better option for many? If you need gpu and portability then the 10th gen is really the only option!

Interesting on this B&H. I think the shipping would make it prohibitive unfortunately. They'd also be sales/import taxes which I don't mind paying as it pays for a more equal society.
Cheers and envious of your snazzy 10th gen! 👍🤘

Thunderbolt 3 has direct access without the need of an additional controller to the CPU with the 10th gen Intel CPU. So stuff like eGPU should be better with the 10th gen.

Would like to see some results on that! It potentially might be worth it then

Is this comparing like-for-like ? i.e. 512GB vs. 512GB ? The 256GB will be slower due to the bus.
No, this is 256GB 8th Gen vs. 512GB 10th Gen. I agree, I would think that the 512GB variant on the 8th Gen should be faster and comparable to the 512GB 10th Gen.

Took delivery of this beauty (10th gen i7, 512gb, 16gb RAM) yesterday and I'm very pleasantly surprised so far! This is my first MacBook and I am blown away by the OS and ability to download top-notch applications directly from the App Store. Coming from a brilliant Windows PC (2015 HP Spectre) that served me very well with only minor issues that self-resolved over the years, I am hoping that this machine also lasts as long without problem.

Pros:
-The magic keyboard is a pleasure to type on! My HP laptop also had what I thought to be a great keyboard, but the magic keyboard beats that by a mile. Comfortable key travel and satisfying clickiness :) I understand the hype now.
-The build quality and simple aesthetics of this laptop smokes the competition. I thought my HP Spectre was a sleek, modern machine, but I really do believe Apple computers look better. Though this 13" unibody design is on its 4th year now, the minimalistic design is classic and just works.
-The speakers - oh my! This makes the rest of laptops sound tinny and meek in comparison. This gets plenty loud with appropriate bass and mid-tones. Even cheap headphones in the AUX jack sound better to me for some reason, not sure why.
-I actually quite enjoy the Touch Bar! Takes a little getting used to, but the ability to just slide a finger to seek through a video, change volume, and customize with each application is super neat.

Cons:
-Given how gorgeous the display is, it makes you wonder how much better 14" screen real estate would be with thinner bezels.
-Probably a lifelong PC-user gripe, but the lack of a physical delete key is tripping me up (the delete on the Mac is actually "backspace" by default and becomes "delete" while pressing Fn)
-Would be nice to have a kill-switch for the webcam like most Windows ultrabooks now
-Old news by now, but its a bit alarming how many dongles and extensions I have to plug in just to store something on an external drive. While I like the 4 TB ports on both sides, I really wish apple included at least one USB3.0 port.

Overall, for moderate web browsing using Safari, Chrome, and Firefox, along with opening Zoom calls and multiple email apps, this 2020 MBP is quite snappy and buttery smooth (the animations built into the OS actually slow the responsiveness of this laptop down a bit IMO). Super happy with this purchase so far 🤩🥳

The only Cons so far:

Color shifts when full screen watching Disney+, Neflix, Prime Video, Fibe TV unless you turn off hardware acceleration in browser.

evrl usb c to 4K/60Hz hdmi adaptor is very hot, ordered Caldigit Thunderbolt 3 Mini Dock, hoping it get rid of issues.

Wish there was a way to turn off internal display when connected to external monitors.

10TH GEN i7/32GB/1TB - SILVER
Received on May 22.

I’m a returner to Mac - my last MBP was a 2013 15” rMBP that I sold in 2017 so I’m returning to Mac after some time away. Prior to this my main machine has been a 15” Asus 2-in-1 i7/16GB/2TB + 512SSD/NVIDIA GTX 950M with 4K resolution - great Windows laptop - fast and quiet mostly.

Consultant by day with a couple of separate businesses that I am growing. Not a developer; no plans for gaming on this machine. This MBP is for my personal/business use. My heaviest workflow will later involve some photo/video editing, but nothing intense at this time. I use Office extensively so a VM for Windows is a must. I’m in webinars and trainings with WFH, so I also do a lot of research and will have multiple tabs open in multiple browsers.

GENERAL SETUP (AT DESK)
Asus 27” PB278Q 2560x1440 2K@60Hz (connected via USB-C to HDMI cable)
MBP - Lid Open (95% of the time) - on a stand
Logitech MX Keys Keyboard and MX Master 3 Mouse
Bose Resolve Speaker via BT

Windows 10 in Parallels 15 (8GB allocated)
Office 365 (have subscription from college)
Office 2019 (same as above) + Visio
WebEx, GoTo Meeting, Teams, BlueJeans, Zoom
Brave - 20-30 tabs (Mac OS)
Firefox - 10 tabs (Windows)
Cloud apps - Quicken, PM tools, etc for varying needs
Other apps as deemed useful

GENERAL THOUGHTS
  • Laptop build quality is 10/10 - not a single flaw. No creaks. I skinned mine because the old cases are not going to fit this MBP due to the slight increase to accommodate the new keyboard. See pics.
  • I love this keyboard. I actually didn’t hate my brief time with the butterfly keyboard, but I questioned its longevity with the keys practically pressed into the chassis to start. This Magic Keyboard is really nice to type on.
  • Does the trackpad really have to be so big?
  • Next to the 16” speakers, the speakers on this MBP are the best I have heard yet. I’m regularly listening to the speakers as I sit on the sofa to type.
  • No Bluetooth or Wifi issues
  • Perfect size for actual laptop use - I can cross my legs and balance the laptop perfectly as I type.
  • This thing is quiet - like really quiet.
  • No coil whine; no snaps/crackles/pops from speakers
  • Battery life doesn’t seem promising - looks like 5 hours when running the external monitor. I will test this weekend for standalone life, but if IIRC, it wasn’t much longer.

TEMPS & FAN NOISE
  • For most usage, I am between 43-61C.
  • Fan noise has been minimal: I heard the fans 1) on the initial power-up, 2) when I installed Parallels/Windows 10 and updated, 3) running benchmark tests, 4) when I connected my iPP via Sidecar as a 3rd screen and then ran a YT video from the 30+ tab Brave session that I moved over. Case 4 was the loudest, but not airport runway loud - as soon as I moved the Brave session back to the MBP, all calmed down.
  • Otherwise, this thing is quiet - like really, really quiet.
  • How quiet? Yesterday, I ran my external monitor, an Asus 2K with Parallels with Excel and OneNote in 365 on Firefox on that screen. On the MBP screen, I had Brave with 20+ tabs open including a 2-hour on-demand webinar class playing. Notes and Pages were open plus Activity Monitor and Intel Power Gadget. The Asus is connected via USB-C to HDMI. All quiet. Temps in the 45-55 degree range. I was expecting noise and heat. It came for less than a minute as I was in the middle of updating Windows 10. Got up to 85-95, fans came on at a soft moderate level, then kicked off.
  • Today I have been on all day with the same session and again quiet. My work 14” Lenovo ThinkPad whirls like it's ready for international takeoff.
DISPLAY
  • Pixel perfect. Very sharp - crisper then on the 2019 refurb I had briefly. Guess I got a better panel this time around.
  • No ghosting issues on the display or on the external
  • No heat issues/fan noise/power spikes with the Asus monitor
  • Between this display and the iPP, my eyes are spoiled. I’m probably going to invest in a 4K monitor now because I can really tell the difference between the MBP display and the Asus. I didn’t see such a difference with the Asus laptop.
BENCHMARKS
  • Geekbench - 1378 & 4867. Highest on the first day. After that, scores have been consistently in the 1360 and 4776 range.
  • Metal - 10439
  • Blackmagic Speed Test - 2753.3 W/2238.1 R, although my Reads have been as high as 2380.
  • Didn’t bother with Cinebench - I can check, but I generally don’t care so much about benchmarks unless I think I have a problem. Only then do I run speed tests and such.

QUIRKS
  • I’m currently using a USB-C to HDMI cable to connect the Asus monitor. The monitor has built-in speakers, so when I connect, my sound automatically goes to those (- except for today??) I can chose the MBP speakers in System Preferences, but when I disconnect from the external monitor, I notice that my sound falls to the right speaker only. thought my left speaker was blown, but when I restarted, my sound was back in both speakers just fine.
  • I’m waiting for a USB-C to DisplayPort cable to arrive. My picture on the Asus is ever so slightly fuzzy, especially in Windows. Going to search to see if there are some tweaks I can make. My gut is telling me I may need to update to a 4K monitor and of course I let the Memorial Day sales pass by.
Although limited usage, hope this helps someone. Also, I'm not sure why my thumbnails inserted into the post, but since I couldn't get them out and keep as attachments, I decided to make it all a little more coherent.

Also, I'm not sure why my thumbnails inserted into the post, but since I couldn't get them out and keep as attachments, I decided to make it all a little more coherent.
now that’s a review! thx 👍👍

Nice review indeed. How’s the i7 processor working?

It works great! I don’t have any other recent MBP to compare it to, but it does perfectly well for my needs. I posted a few benchmarks in the review for those who are interested.
