It will be years but the U.S. and Europe are finally waking up and realizing they need to increase chip production to equalize things. Intel, TSMC, & Texas Instruments are all building massive chip plants in the U.S. in the next few years and we're still working to get the CHIPS Act passed. Europe I know has a CHIPS Act of their own.

The great Chip shortage is just yet another example of how it takes a complete disaster and meltdown before people finally wake up. Often times it's too little too late for near term results.

Apple's MacBook Pro assemblers in China are unlikely to return to pre-lockdown production levels until July because of insufficient manpower and logistical problems, based on the latest industry report.

Notebook manufacturers in major cities in eastern China have been resuming operations following the recent gradual easing of lockdowns, but those in Shanghai are currently only operating at 10-20% capacity, according to supply chain sources cited by DigiTimes.

Shanghai is the base of operations for Quanta Computers, Apple's sole supplier of high-end MacBook Pros, which have seen delivery times increase by three to five weeks since the China lockdowns. Some MacBook Pro configurations currently are not available for delivery until late June running into early July.

According to the report, Shanghai plants are still feeling the brunt of restrictions since only assembly workers and those who live in dormitories are allowed to return to work.

Meanwhile, many products are said to be trapped on container ships waiting to enter ports, and until these products are received by retail and shipped to customers, large-scale pull-ins at production facilities are on hold. The slow restoration of operations has also reportedly resulted in component pull-in strength being far below expectations.

We have heard from several MacRumors readers who were waiting on MacBook Pro models ordered in March and April and who have now had their shipments significantly delayed because of Apple's supply issues, which are expected to impact Apple's product sales in the third quarter of 2022.

For example, MacRumors reader Gary ordered a MacBook Pro on April 6 and was initially given a delivery date between May 18-25. This morning he says he was notified by Apple of a a new delivery date between July 7-21, which amounts to more a three-month delay in shipping.

Apple has already admitted that lockdown disruptions in China and silicon shortages will continue to make it difficult to make enough product to satisfy strong consumer demand, and this will ultimately affect Apple's June quarter revenue.

Canceled my order. Might as well wait for a new MBP refresh at this point.

With delays like we're seeing... if you place an order now, do you pay now or when it eventually ships in a month or 3?

At some point everyone is going to have to accept it’s just NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. LOL. I’d love to go to back in time as well. But the nature of the pandemic has changed the economy fundamentally on a global scale. So there is no true “pre pandemic” levels of production that will ever be reached.

Not unless they can totally eradicate all traces of this virus. And this is just one of several competing for attention, if you take my meaning.

Bottom line. We never could and will not be able to support the supply and demand expectations setup by the economic rush to production of the last few decades. We don’t have the technology to do so.

If it wasn’t one virus it would be another. So for anyone who doesn’t choose to believe in the science or believe it’s politically tainted.

It would be easier for us to go back to pre-9/11 global travel than pre-pandemic economics.

I wonder how this affects refurbished MBPs. Are they worked on and reassembled in China? Is that done here in the U.S.?

I was heavily on the fence for CTO 14" but instead pulled the trigger on a base 16" config at Costco. For those who don't need CTO, there's still a good amount of stock in other retailers. Apple near me only seems to have the base 13" and 14" configs, in addition to Airs and base iMacs.

When it ships is still the gold standard. If that changes then it will just fuel grey and black market sales of the same or similar goods.

Hopefully they won’t be so damned short sighted.

Because the component supply is generally already a known or preexisting quantity then it shouldn’t be affected as severely. But anything that requires fresh manufacture of any sub components is at risk for delay because that is where the supply chain failure is.

No one planned for such a scenario so stocks and inventory would be “made to order” on a large scale.

A market for reused components will become a real thing in short order due to the inability to ramp up scale to pre pandemic levels while maintaining cost efficiencies proposed by those manufacturers.

People have been dying. And they are still needed to do many delicate tasks that aren’t entirely automated yet.

LOL they're still in lockdown? LOL
Apple really needs to move their production somewhere else, like the USA! I'd gladly pay more to support the local economy.
The rest of the world couldn't care less about the American economy and already pay far more than US based customers for the same product. If you want to support the American economy then just spent more in your local stores where small businesses are struggling.

I live in Shanghai and my expected ending time of the lockdown is Nov, when President Xi claims his lifelong dictitorship is approved by the whole country.
