losing my charge

2 nights ago my MBP battery started playing up. suddenly dropped from 60% to 5%. found coconutbattery from this thread:

mac capacity has gone from 5603mAh to now showing 999mAh. it seems to drop every cycle....

My serial number isnt covered by the replacement. Do I just call AppleCare and ask for replacement? I didnt buy the 3 years coverplan but I assume I'm still entitled to hardware replacement for a year?

I would contact Apple. That is not normal.

Mine was starting to do that (I was part of the replacment program), where it started to lose 100mAh every couple of days, but the last couple of charges (normal plugging in without fulling draining the battery) have it back up to 5410mAh. It was as low as 5055mAh.

Whoa!!!

I've had the new battery for about a month now.. check out the reduced power! What is up do you think?

Battery down to 2417 mAh or 43% (if you can't see my attachment)

if I'm outside of my 90days applecare support can i still phone them? tbh I can't even find the phone number on the apple website.

what worries me more is that people with new batteries are seeing the same problem. so they replace mine and I get one just as bad?

also read somewhere that batteries arent covered under applecare, though that might have been wrong....

crikey now it's saying 4990mAh as Current Battery Capacity

this is so random....

If your battery is that low after a month, I would try the complete drain (turn it on, turn off any sleep options under the energy settings) and let it sleep until the light goes off. Then charge without using until it's completed.

I've done that twice now and it seems to work, but then I also need to use it about 50% of the way on battery then charge it to get it back up to 100%.

If it's still a problem, then a call into Apple is in order. If it's past the 90 days, I'd still call and epedite this. If you have an Apple store near you, I'd take it them and show them the battery charge mAh settings via coconutbattery. If there's proof, that may help your case for getting it replaced.

thanks for the advice.

1 question - can i let it sleep until the light goes off?? I've kept it on until the mbp has put itself to sleep through low power, but it just sits there with the light glowing on and off. do I have to then wait longer until it completely dies before charging??

then how do i charge without using until its fully charged? does the light on the magsafe connector go green to show fully charged, even if the mbp is off?

cheers in advance.....

Yes. Let is sleep until the white glowing light goes on and off. It normally takes 5-6 hours for it to completely drain.

And yes, the green light will be on the magsafe connector when it's done. When you turn it back on, it will wake up from sleep. I always shut everything down and do a restart to make sure it gets a clean start.

ok so...

use it on battery until it sleeps, then leave it a further 5-6 hours. then charge without using until the magsafe led is green. THEN use it...

ok I'll try that cheers :)

ok I tried that - and yes, I got back to full 100% capacity.

thought 'yes this is great!'

then I left it in sleep mode (not plugged in) overnight. came in this morning, used the battery charge test button on the battery before waking it up and got 4 green lights. again thought 'this is good'

woke it up and battery charge dropped instantly to 0% and it went back into sleep mode. plugged in the charger and woke it up again and cocunutbattery tells me it is now at 16% of original capacity (882mAh)

so it looks like I'm back to square one, unless I fully cycle every day, and charge it completely before waking it up. not exactly convenient......

[edit] just pulled the charger out again and capacity jumped back up to 5525mAh. makes no sense to me - seems totally random :(
