MacBook Pro Battery Exchange

I guess I'll go ahead and return my old one then and give the new one a few cycles. As for usage, I keep my screen at 80-100% and have airport and bluetooth on all the time. I also have it set to better battery life in the battery menu. When I took the times, I was only running safari. It would just be nice to get alittle more 2.5 hours use out of a $3K machine before I have to try and find an outlet. Especially with the monster power brick.

Thanks anyway.

As for heat, it is still just as scalding hot as it was before the new battery.

It seems that lately apple has been doing a lot of these "replacement programs" for batteries, but it is better than having people suffer with poor preformance. But it would be better if they could get it correct the first time.

I e-mailed one of my friends to let him know about the program. He said his battery life was not very good and hoped this would help.

My MBP was randomly shutting down, then eventually it wouldn't even recognize that there was a battery installed. I took it to an Apple Store Genius Bar, and they happily replaced the battery. (Before this issue was known.)

Nope... my MBP still randomly shuts down :-(

Got my replacement battery and took it through one full cycle. 80% brightness on my screen, both BT and AP are on all the time and it appears that I got at least another 20 mins of life out of this new battery.

We'll see what happens over time. Never had problems with my older battery, but I wasn't happy with the battery life. We'll see how this one does over time.

The replacement and return was very quick.

I am currently running on 25% brightness, AP and BT turned on, apps in the background spinning my HD, no optical running though and it's giving me close to 3:30. Slightly longer than before, maybe a similar 20 minutes, but I am more so waiting for the day where my battery shows equal or lower than expected charge, (coconutBattery has shown higher than expected every day thus far, something that the old battery never gave me).

I'm going to get coconutbattery and see what it can do. My earlier stats were from iStat nano, which I manually kept track of.

Hopefully Three's a Charm!

All I can say is that its about time that Apple did a formal recall. I am currently on my 3rd battery after having had the first replacement fail after only 4 weeks. They need to find a better source than LG.

Wow, I think I got extremely lucky. My MBP has been buzzing from the screen inverter since I got it, but I didn't want to send it in to AppleCare while I was relishing its awesomeness. I finally got a box sent to me last week and sent it in on Tuesday, August 1. Hours before I sent it off, I read the story here about the battery replacement program and got one sent to me. While my MBP was off being repaired, they apparently noticed that my battery qualified and replaced it. So now I have two new batteries, one from AppleCare, and one from the replacement program. They kept my old battery when I sent it in to AppleCare, so I don't have an old one to send back! If they call and ask for my old battery, I guess I'll just tell them that they've already got it.

Hooray! I can finally edit video fully mobile!

I had the same thing happen with mine. You can't beat 2 new free batteries.

you can try calling, but on the inside of the label you rip off, it says they'll charge you somewhere between 90-121 dollars (it depends on the circumstances) if you dont ship a battery back in 10 days. Just so you know.

Batt just arrived on my desk... (I'm in Australia)

there is nothing anywhere in the doco or packaging that they have sent this battery in, that absolutely says I have to return it or I will be invoiced or penalised or anything like that...

it just says "please return your original battery to apple following the instructions below within ten (10) business days of receipt of this letter. It is important that you return the original battery to apple so that it can be properly recycled"...

by recycled I assume they will gut the casing and re-use the casing for a good cell pack.

Is there any reason why I should return my old battery? I've looked up and down and inside out this packaging to see any kind of warning about being fined/invoiced, or whatever... nothing.

There's also nothing on the apple site that says I absolutely must send it in!

here's some packaging pics!

I got mine today as well. I have sent it back as requested. It was tempting to have a spare battery for free but I figure they have done the right thing by us so I will do as they request.

First day off since receiving it last Thursday, so arranged collection for between 3-5pm BST. Must get back from visiting a friend who had surgery yesterday before 3pm or I may not get it back within 10 days.

I will also add, in response to our Aussie friend Cybix, I got a "Dear Apple Customer" leaflet in my box which states "In all cases, you must return your original part....or you may be charged Apple's retail price for the part." If you didn't get this, bear it in mind.

Well, I called apple last night, to ask them about the fact that my new battery is actually giving me less time, almost 30 min less, than my old battery, and they said to take my MBP to the apple dealer I bought it from (they're not an apple store, but they are an authorized service/reseller), and have them run a power management diagnostic. So I'll be doing that tomorrow after work.
I did ask them about if I had to return the battery, and he said that they wanted them back for testing and to be recycled, so it looks like yes, you have to send it back.
DHL is scheduled to pick up my old one today and apple said they'd send me another new one if I continue to have problems. He acted like it would be hand picked and not just sent out by an automated system.
We'll see....

Since the nearest UPS depot is two minutes walk away, I should have asked to take it there myself, but didn't. They picked it up at 1630, (on their way back presumably), so it has now gone.

May buy a spare when this battery goes to 80% or so, but happy to cope with just the one for now.

Well I just cycled my brand new replacement battery and I am not too happy. Heres its stats.

Mine was the same. 95% capacity after its first cycle. However, on its third cycle, it's at 100%.

Actual real-life performance seems exactly the same as the 4-month old battery I sent back when it was new. Can't complain :D

Thanks. That makes me feel a bit better. I will do a few more cycles and see how we go.

I'm still waiting on my invoice for my free batteries. I wouldn't bother sending it back since all there going to do is most likely destroy the battery. It would cost them more to hound you about sending the battery back than to just let you have it. Additionally there was no extra label stuck on my battery telling how much I would be charged. Just the generic form letter for replacement parts.

From the minute I switched batteries, I have kept an eye on the charge of the battery and it has been consistantly at about 5570 mAh, give or take.

I am happy as an exchange, but if others manage to keep their original batteries with no penalty from Apple, I will be annoyed. It's not really much different from downloading the Beta of Leopard. Hey, after all it's about the same price for a new battery as it will be for Leopard.

I believe they inform you they wil charge you at the standard retail rate. Not got my documents in front of me.

I got a replacement battery last week, but haven't sent the old one back yet. To be honest I'm very annoyed at the shoddy way in which the returns thing is supposed to happen. I received no instructions other than the US/Canada ones (I'm in the UK), no 'adhesive tape' I've seen mentioned here... I guess I will ring up UPS to collect, but the whole thing is not very impressive at all and I will be livid if Apple charge us for the battery in in any event.

Dell announces another recall of 4.1 million batteries. It looks to be the largest battery recall in the history of computing. Are there any good battery manufacturers out there?

Actually the batteries are made by Sony, which also makes batteries for Apple.

Looks like Apple may have been bitten by this already ... the swelling and hot batteries may be them, of course we will know shortly.

The Li-batteries once again cause problems. :(
