Actually the batteries are made by Sony, which also makes batteries for Apple.

Yes, sorry...didn't mean to imply that it was a Dell manufacturing problem...it affects everyone, as we've seen with Apple's battery recalls. I just meant third-party battery manufacturers (in this case, Sony) in general. The number of battery recalls in recent years is just astounding...it just seems like no company can consistently make good batteries.

Hey,

I'm wondering if any of the early returners who have had their batteries for 10+ days and have not returned the old ones can post their experiances.

Has apple knocked on your doors? kidnapped the kids? I just got mine today and i wanted to know wether it was safe to keep the old battery or not.

Oh btw my replacement battery came with cosmetic damage. One of the corners is pushed upwards, it dosen't affect safety (i belive...) but it is obvious. Don't know wether it's worth fighting with applecare about something that i rarely see.

Anywho,
Thanks for any info.

I'm currently nursing a couple of broken legs... and I woke up beside a horse's head this morning....

Nah, seriously, I just returned my battery today, so it'll probably arrive back with Apple a few days outside of the 10-day limit.

Regarding your replacement -- I'd absolutely call AppleCare. If your replacement is in any way inferior to your original, you are completely entitled to another battery. Really, don't settle for what you've been sent. As a matter of course, never ever use any battery that shows any sign of physical damage. Even if it left Apple in perfect condition, it's arrived damaged and you have no certainty that it's safe to use.

Perhaps a little melodramatic and over-cautions? Sure. But there's no reason you should have to use it.

According to the text of the letter that was sent with the replacement battery, it looks like I had still till mid October, even though the paper said something about returning it in 10 days.

I would avoid trying to keep it as you'll most likely get a bill from Apple.

Just got my mbp back from mainboard and other replacements and they replaced my battery. Darn it, i wanted to keep it :p

I haven't been billed, but then again it was purchased through my bloated IT department, so perhaps they got something. :p

I'm holding onto it, as it's already come in handy.

Im keeping mine too. Im past the 10 days now. I got the battery sent to a friends house who i was staying with at the time. I wonder whether this means the bill will be sent to them !

Hope your computer never breaks down

So when you need Applecare in a years time, they look up the serial number of the MacBook Pro that you gave them on the battery replacement form, and see you didn't return it....

Apple instituted the replacement program because the first batteries that came out were of less quality/didn't have very good running time. If you send your old battery in it's only going to get recycled. You're NOT going to be charged for keeping the old one. What you WOULD be charged for is keeping a component part that needed replacement in most other circumstances.

I'm guna need applecare in a years time  !?!
I'm quite computer savvy, technically speaking.
And if they do ask for the money, then sure i'll pay them. It's not exactly a big deal now is it?

Actually ill test your theory come tuesday in my local apple retailer. From what I've heard when its concerning Macbook pros Apple retailers are quite lax, due to the amount of problems. When my power adaptor conked out, they replaced it, no questions asked, they didn't take down any personal details, even the person serving me was shocked.

This battery recall thing is still a little unclear to me. Does the battery potentially catch fire while the computer is in use or while it is kept on the charger (even if the computer is off and cool)?
My PB 12" (from November 2003) is eligible and so is the battery (a NEW battery I bought from Apple just under a year ago). I mean, I'll take another NEW battery free, but just wondering if it's really necessary...

There are so many fingers pointing at Dell/Apple/Lenovo when Sony should be taking the heat from all these recalls. Talk about political fallout on the victims themselves.

I've got one of the recalled batteries, and my capacity is higher than it was originally o_O

update: got my new battery today, it says nothing about being charged if I don't return the old one

Battery not available

My 15" MBP's battery, model number A1175, serial number ending in TY4B (not one of the ones involved with apple's battery recall) conked out on me at midnight last week. The green led lights on the battery itself all lit up indicating a full charge, but the battery was "unavailable". A call to Apple yesterday (20 minute wait to talk to a person, and a 45 minute conversation with said person and resetting the PMU and the PRAM to no effect) led to Apple's sending me a replacement battery free of charge, which I received today. This fixed the problem. Great service to fix a lousy battery!

2 batteries

My defective battery was literally going to explode. It was bluging out of the center and the metal cover was peeling off the back.

Anyway, I got my replacement battery within 1 business day so I was really happy. But then, the next day, I got another package from Apple and its another brand new battery! I was thinking "Oh, they must've sent me two different packages..." but when I read the shipping label, everything is printed exactly the same...down to the product and replacement/order #.

So I was wondering if I would get charged for two batteries if I only returned one.

Oh, and I don't understand this "return within 10 days thing." My label says return it within 3 months (I got it Aug 30th and it says return by 11/30).

Anyone get billed yet ? Nothing wrong with my original battery, so I'd like to keep it, but if Apple are gonna charge me I might as well buy a new one instead
