Not sure m8, I assume so. It's that or the Macbook!

I was eventually transfered to a different department, but not before being asked to email Pictures and stuff and being asked if anything else was damaged, was there anything else connected to the Macbook etc

Yeah, my house burned down. Please send a cheque for $450,000 and a new macbook. :p

....sighs...the dream life.

Update:

Apple have reassured me that this is not a problem that is what they consider the 'norm' for their laptops, although there are investigations ongoing into these issues and my Macbook is now being sent of to Ireland and then to america for further investigation.

As clearly the Macbook I currently use will be needed for this I have been offered a 17" BTO Macbook Pro with 3.06GHZ Processor and 500gb Hard Drive @ 7200 rpm. (Which should be with me by late next week).

Anyway I am off out but I thought I would give you guys an update!

Don't forget to ask for 8GB RAM and SSD ;)

I'm a Windows user who has been considering purchasing two Macbooks, one for myself and one for my mother. I have been following MacRumors and various other sites, checking out the new Macbooks, getting a feel for the product etc...

I have to tell you, there have been a few troubling issues come up but none like this. Apple can replace a notebook but can't replace a life or my personal belongings. I was unaware that there were previous issues with this (Google brings up all kinds of articles, a lawsuit (or more than one perhaps), etc... and yet Apple still has not effectively dealt with the problem.

The new Macbooks look real sweet but, man, maybe I should can the idea of a switch to MAC and just buy a VAIO.

no offense....but a sony vaio....?

trade magsafe fire for exploding batteries?

I think that the reason all of these Macs are catching fire is because of a faulty Magsafe connector, not the other parts of the computer. If the power supply itself was faulty, there would be an electrical humming, plus some other signs of damage. There was probably a small gap between the connector and the computer, and a spark caught fire or something.

I thought it would never happen to me!
Part of the problem is the magsafe transformer case. (The brick end). People wrap the cord around it for transport and the base of the cord where it meets the "brick" just keeps bending. Over time the wires start to fray.

They need to stiffen this end up.

Yeah, I think I'd take the occasional computer virus over a burnt down house and being dead anyday. :p

Is it bad that I am taking the time to really think about which one I would choose?

Doesn't say much for your survival instinct. ;)

They really need to fix this before someone dies. Its been going on for as long as there's been a Mega"safe" connector. Its likely a problem with the technology of the device, and they don't want to dump it as it will loose that "cool factor" that Mac's rely on.

You can still be cool and die in a house fire...as long as you have that awesome looking computer inside :D

At least Sony did a recall instead of replacing them as they blew up, potentially harming someone. Apple hasn't solved a problem that isn't even new to the latest Macbooks. Apple hasn't recalled the units nor issued a warning on the potential fire hazard. If the problem is the adapters themselves then Apple should find a way to fix the problem and do a full on recall.

sony did a recall...they sure did.....a year and a half after they started blowing up.

sony is no better than apple....

Well, a late recall is better than no recall. If I understand correctly from doing a little Googling, Apple has had fire related issues with their Magsafe adapters/connectors since as early as 2006. Don't you think that's enough time to get their act together.

I'll take a reduced risk of fire in exchange for the higher risk of the machine being damaged if someone trips over the power chord any day of the week.

All laptops/electrical appliances have the possibility of catching fire. Just look at Dell! Better yet, Google Dell, then HP, ect. + fire, and you'll see that just about every laptop maker has BBQ laptops.

oh i totally agree, the magsafe connector should be fixed, and they did do a patchwork fix on it once. but there needs to be a fuse in these units once the fuse goes the adapter should be useless and sent back to mac. not a user replaceable fuse.

this would put a end to all this.

Tried but it was either SSD (128) with 2.8ghz or 3.06ghz with 7200 rpm upgrade on the 17" models.

Still pretty darn good, considering I was just expecting a replacement!

glad to see it worked out for you,

i got the 2.8 and squeezed the 128 ssd out of them with the apple care :p

Ok. And Apple has yet to do this after three years because.........?

I'm not trying to pick on Apple. I really wanted to buy a Macbook Pro. But I doubt I would buy one knowing that this problem exists and has for three years and that Apple has done little to correct the problem for three years.

I realize there are alot of products that have issues, some we know about, and some not. Some are recalled and some are left because it's decided that a recall would be more expensive than paying out money in a settlement. But, here's an issue that Apple has known about for several years yet has not actually been able to or cared enough to effectively do anything about.

they have done stuff to prevent it,

increased casing thickness and end plug sheilding has been beefed up.

they havent done nothing?, there just taking the steps to solve the issue.

they have collected my adapter to do research on as im sure they did with the others, they 2006 ones are not as serious as the recent onces and HAVE been corrected.

the new more serious ones have to do with the face of the magsafe connect and twisting of the terminals.

nothing to do with fraying cables.

You'd think by now they would have either done it right or dropped the idea. The fact that the current problem, though slightly different, is still with the adapter/connector should tell them something. They need to spend far more time and money to get it right or simply stop wasting time and move on.

Can't say I want to be one of their guinea pigs.

I just recently got a 13 inch MBP (which I love...).

Before that I had a mid 2007 macbook. Since I switched, I noticed that I sometimes don't connect the magsafe connector straight and then when I look at I notice that it's connected at an angle. The green/orange light still lights up to show that it's connected/charging.

This never happened to me on my white macbook so I just wonder if the design has changed slightly (to the worse) which prevents the connector from self-aligning properly.

If the connector is not on straight it will probably lead to sparks jumping between the connections and could potentially be a fire hazard.

Has anybody else found themselves accidentally connecting the plug at an angle?

Fabian

Its just like the 1st gen ipod nanos! I had a couple of them and one got so hot one day it burnt my hand. I called Apple and they sent a replacement right away and asked if anything elso was damaged. I said my pc was acting weird after the incident and they offered to replace it with a black macbook but there was no burn marks or anything on the computer so I had to decline. (Didnt want to commit fraud:D)
