So do you think that apple may have replaced those LCD's from the November/Last Quarter's batch?

It is very possible. The screen in this MBP is noticeably better than the screen of the MBP I had back in November after the C2D revision took place. I forget how to check which week your build is, but if someone wants to remind me I can post it here.

I don't really have any comparison to base this off of, but I believe mine has the grainy screen, and it was manufactured this March

located in the serial #. Mine's W8643-----

week 43 build. 9c60 screen.

also remember apple uses an uncommon resolution as well as a high pixel count LCD with the MBPs...literally every other laptop i've looked at dont have a max 1440 x 900 res. more like 1280 etc.

So basically the 17" MBP's are far superior than their 15" counterpart's displays? There were rumors flying around about apple using LED displays for the 15" MBPs.

I bought a 15" MBP about 10 days ago. The 2.33 GHz, Matte version. The grainy display was so distracting i returned it and got a black MacBook. I had to push the manager at my Apple store for 10 minutes before he agreed not to charge me the restocking fee, but he did the right thing.

I noticed the graininess on all of the matte displays in the store, even the 30" LCD. I even noticed it on the glossy 15" MBP, but the MacBook has a far superior display IMHO. It's a shame, i liked everything else about the MBP...but I am really enjoying the BlackBook now.

I have a 15" MBP C2D matte finish about a 1 and 1/2 months old and notice no grain whatsoever. No grain in Windows either, games are crisp too. Are the ones with the issue using the LCDs native resolution?

I can't speak for everyone, but yes on mine.

I just assumed it was a side effect of all matte displays, and I'm not convinced yet by people saying they don't see it until I see it for myself. I have never seen a non-grainy matte display.

I frequently stop by the apple stores in NYC and a month ago I saw the first MBP that had a relatively low level of grain. It was a 09c60 display and the mbp was from early 2007. I immediately compared it to the same display on the other, older machines there and there was quite a difference. The display was not as crisp as older powerbooks, the MBP 17" or the macbooks, but it was better than what has been the case before.

still, the problem is so very obvious and I'm disappointed in Apple for not taking it seriously. Up until I saw the above unit, ALL MBP 15" I had seen in the U.S., England and Sweden were awfully grainy.

I'll try to get a picture when I get home, but I just haven't seen grain on mine. I hooked up my 19" Gateway lcd for an extended desktop setting. Mac LCD running at 1440x900 if I remember right and the gateway at the max 1280x1024. my mac lcd is much nicer looking. I havent noticed grain on neither. Mine looks like that example screenshot in the first posts but without the 1%.

here. btw my camera sucks.. my screen is pretty crisp and clean to me. If you find it grainy then you're just picky :p

the vertical lines on the right picture were generated by my camera. I had to get it in the right angle and distance away from the screen otherwise it makes those odd lines.

Why is this thread still active? Haha, what did I start? Oh well. If I didn't bring it up maybe nobody would have said anything.

No, I'm glad you did, as I'm sure others are. I thought it was just me at first, glad I'm not being completely anally retentive.

If it was as bad as the left side of the sample shot then ok, other than that I think some individuals are completely anally retentive :p

edit: on a side note because of you I do notice the slight grainyness.. bastard.. just kidding... I think its the pixels. They kinda shimmer slightly when I focus closely on a spot and tilt my head up and down.

Yeah, all of us who noticed the grainy display and found it unacceptable had to actually stand on our heads, with our hands behind our back and look at the display at a 180 degree angle to see the grain!

Seriously, the grain is so amazingly visible on the 15" compared to Apple's other laptops that I'm surprised it hasn't been an even bigger issue. We're not just making this up for fun. I want nothing more than to have a really good 15" apple laptop, but when both the 17" and the 13" have better displays I just can't recommend that anybody get one at this point. I bet that the new updated ones will have a good screeen though...that's how apple acknowledges defects.

Yeah, this is a pretty big issue. My current MBP has a pretty clear screen but, as I said before, the two I had back in November were bad news. The grain and uneven lighting was VERY noticeable on those. I was so gunshy this time that I made the people in the Apple store let me look at my MBP before I would agree to buy it haha.

basicaly th screens on these 17mbp r crap.. u jus hav 2 keep returnin them until u get a good crap screen rather than a bad crap screen . lovely vino
