Anyone still having screen problems on the MacBook Pros? I returned mine and got a Mac Pro and an Apple Cinema Display and I couldn't be happier. I love having the Mac Pro a lot more than the crappy MacBook Pro with the sucky screen.

Hehe - I spent a good three months late last Summer and through most of Fall waiting for the updated MBPs. I finally got a Mac Pro 2 weeks after C2Ds came out. Been loving it ever since. Would never buy a laptop for home use, especially that, like a lot of people today, I alraedy have a work laptop which I can bring home or take on vacation.

I agree with the first two points, but disagree with the third. Having worked for Apple during the Scully era, we sometimes were CC'd on emails that were sent to Scully, and, rightly or wrongly, we passed them off as attention-seeking nuts.

Best working with a store and customer service, as frustrating as that can be. Perhaps even showing other people's similar complaints might work, though I don't know of anyone who's had success with this.

Gee isnt that what happened at DELL? now there not # 1 , HP is and Michaels back at the helm fixing things . You can ignore for so long and eventually it will bite you . Seeing how I am new to Apple I have NO idea of what Steve Jobs is like nor do I care, but to ignore your customer base is NOT good business

Grainy ? Not so as You'd Notice

Hello,

I have a 2 month old 15" MBP and a 17" MBP that's a little older and both are very sharp and clear. They have always been very good and I use Aperture with them both, as well as Photoshop.

No Complaints so far.

Cheers.

So yours is GRANEY, but you'd have to really look for it ? Is that what your saying?

BIOS Setting

Since I am new to Apple and don't really know this, and with all the issues with the displays and graininess .

I was just wondering if there were bios / cmos settings in these systems that mite effect the display, maybe somethings changed?

I know I talked to a local Mom Pop Authorized shop and they said they have never scene any problems with the Macbook pro's , but the tech said it could be the display, or a board on the inside, and would have to go through the whole diagnosis to find out what the problem was than order the part and see if that fixes the problem. In the end he said he would tell anyone under the 15 day period to just swap it out and keep swapping it or get your money back.

Fairly sure it is not a problem with the BIOS or video card firmware.

Easy explanation? Well if you look at the 17" and 15" side by side you will see that the 17" is affected less. One possible hypothesis is that the 17 inchers somehow ship with a less buggy firmware, but that's silly talk. Chances are it is due to the LCD panels Apple choose for the 2 machines.

I may be imagining things but the 2007 macbook pro 15" I checked my email on at the 5th Avenue store seemed better in terms of grain than the 2006 week 46 one next to it. It had 'grain' but not as bothersome as the other one, and definitely not as bad as the ones I had before. Could it be that AUO has changed something? One thing I'm pretty sure about and that's that the newer one had a brighter display, but that could just be usage.

I still don't get how everybody can be blind to this issue -reviewers and tons of users have raved about the display and I've never seen a great MBP 15" display. Ever. And I've see quite a few all over the world and differen build weeks. I want to believe that the displays are better now...I want to....I really want to...

Ok, took my MBP to the Apple store here in town, spent almost an hour with the Mac Genius, he went through everything, adjusted the font smoothing and turned up the brightness and said that he did not see anything wrong with the computer screen , display or anything, acutally said its one of the brightest he has scene in a while, the guy was OK in my book seemed to talk the talk and supposedly had a back ground in photography and computers, said I could go to the Glossy but showed me the difference and because I like the feel on the MBP that I have and the CD drive is NOT like an orbital sander I chose to keep it, I have a few more days before the exchange period is up. According to the genius also, Apples LCD's , Screens are the BEST, and nothing but the best and he has NOT read or been told anything about problems or anything of the sort. I just kept saying why this , and why that, and he had an answser that made sense. The main point to me is that I like others have a good chunk of money invested, and want my monies worth and for the computer to last years down the road. :apple:

Not sure if I would be shooting myself in the foot by going for a Macbook, I know I would have a large amount of money coming back, thats for sure. I did not look at the 17 inch model. Also another guy told me that Apple monitors are of a 16:9 ratio, once again supposedly very high standards. Going to stare and use this computer over the weekend and go from there. For what I do on the computer, the MBP is an overkill, I mainly got it because of the larger screen figuring it'd be easier to use and be crystal clear and sharp like a PC, boy did I figure wrong.

One thing if you do NOT agree with what I have posted regarding the grainey display, thats your opinion and your opinon alone, since I am new to Apple, and learning every day there are people that you trust or think you trust and go with it. We all learn by life experience's, right , wrong, doesnt matter, WE LEARN. Technology changes, what worked in the past may NOT be available today. I know this I am sitting behind a beautiful Apple laptop computer and a crystal clear view, and I got this from going to the Apple store in Albany NY and talking and learning from a Mac Genius. I have my monies worth. Whether or not you agree is once again your OPINION. With over 25 years in the computer field, and learning from the ground up. I'm very very happy.

I will say that the Airport Express is GREAT though

My 20 cents

i would not say apple use the best displays although back in the day i.e titanuims /acd's etc they had very good screens but since the powerbook they have been ok at best i mean my 17" mbp is good but not as good as my 1ghz titanuim so its depends how fussy you are about viewing angles etc

The Apple genius I talked to in the 5th avenue store told me the same thing: "Apple uses ONLY the very best displays in its computers". Whatever is all I can say - it's insulting that they would assume that customers are unable to tell a good screen from a bad one. Just go into a compusa and choose their cheapest PC laptop and it'll be nice! I think what is so contradictory with what mac geniuses claim is that it's VERY obvious which Apple laptop has the worst screen if you put them all side by side: the macbook, 15"MBP and 17MBP". It's not like we even need to compare with the PC world - just compare with the 17" or cheapo macbook and it's very very clear that the 15" is not as crisp and has graininess. At the very least, we should expect the 17 and 15 to be similar in quality, but it's depressing that the macbook comes out as the one with the most consistent, even illuminated and grainless display...isn't it?

I just got one and it has the same problem, its very evident i noticed it from the startup screen. Did anyone have theirs replaced because of this issue? sorry if that was posted, i didn't want to read 18 pages.

They have swapped mine out at the store 3 times so far, today or on Monday it goes back for good, I'll stick with a macbook till I see better screens and less posts here and on apples discussion forums for the Macbook Pro about this problem. Macbook Pro is great, but swapping out computers and wasting gas back and forth does not make this $2500.00 computer worth the money, and agravation

Yeah... I totally gave mine back. I now have a Mac Pro with a 20" Apple Cinema Display and I'm loving it way more than I ever liked that MacBook Pro... what a bad deal that was. I'm happy having my Mac Pro and my PowerBook G4. For being a new release, this Mac Pro is rock solid and I've had very very little issues with it. Apple hardly ever comes out with a product that works this well on a first release.

By the way, I was the one who originally started this whole controversy over at MacNN and then pbmikes re-posted it here. :-D

They looked at mine and said they saw something else that was wrong and not right ,,, I got the macbook 2.0 for now, and will wait till fall to see what else comes out. Honestly the MBP is an awesome computer, just the screen that I cannot take. The Apple store and staff, fantastic, marvelous, and will go back and buy again. I love this macbook, really really nice.

Back to web dev, and bloggin for me

Hi all, i'm looking for advice from those with experience dealing with apple customer service. Here's my situation:

I bought a Macbook Pro a few days ago, and it is plagued by extremely noticeable grain. I have a dell 2007wfp that exhibits a somewhat similar characteristic, but the effect is much worse, and much more distracting on the mac. As others have stated in this thread, i find the screen is hard on my eyes (especially while reading text). Additionally, the viewing angle is quite poor (although there are no obvious backlight issues) and colors are dull and bland.

I purchased the mac from my university computer store, whose policy is to not accept returns on any opened products.
Given this, i'm wondering what my options are. Would apple take the computer back directly? And if so, would it be possible to get a refund or would it be exchange only?

With the exception of the grain i love the computer and would love to keep it, but the experiences of others here has led me to believe the grain is epidemic among these computers and the issue would not be resolved through a replacement. This obviously shoddy display has no place on a 'professional' laptop

Any input on what i should do would be appreciated.

Thanks

Dude here's the deal the way I see and understand and have had first hand experiences with . With the Matte screen I had two that were grainy and than I went to the mac book, could NOT deal with the smaller screen and the smaller keyboard! "I have huge hands" anyways I talked to the store manager where I bought mine from in Albany NY " Crossgates Mall" (Donna & Ian) both fantastic people and they said what do you want to do and I said I wanted the glossy, and justified / explained why and showed them "I was on the last day for exchange" They both looked at what I was showing and explaining and said think about it and come back. I did later that day and have The MBP 15.4 2.16 with glossy screen and the computer could not be better. I thank APPLE and these two people I dealt with along with Dave, Nick, Matt and others. Here in Albany NY and the people there at Crossgates Apple store are AWESOME and they take the time to listen and learn . THEY TAKE CARE OF CUSTOMERS. NO I DON'T WORK FOR THEM either. Try the glossy screen it really is AWESOME.

I hope this somewhat if not all answered your questions another item to check is go into System Pref's Appearance and set Font Smoothing for Automatic display and font size 10 . This has worked GREAT FOR ME.

Bill the Mac Genius, this guy is a wealth knowledge and KNOWs what he is talking about, wonderful personality . Very very professional.

Thanks for the reply.
Since i can't return the computer to the store where it was purchased, i'm specifically interested in whether or not i would be able to send it back directly to apple, either for a full refund, or for a replacement to a glossy screen (although it sounds like many people still have the grain issue with glossy screens).

I knowi could just call apple and ask them, but i want to make sure the result of the call does not depend on the specific customer service rep. that i speak to.

If it were me, I would goto the nearest store and talk to them and see what they say, since your a student, take the proof of being a student and see if the Apple store will honor the discount?, and go from there.

The graininess issue I think is 50/50, 50 percent the user want to see graininess, and 50 percent its actually there. I know I saw it on the matte screen but NOT on the Glossy screen's .

If your local Apple store will give u the discount and work with you great, BUT before sending it back to apple, play with the glossy and matte side by side, and use different applications and surf different sites and also download FF on both computers and try that also.

Phineas

Best of Luck , but personally I do not think your going to need it. Like I said in the other post , I have been MORE than impressed.

:)

It's been awhile since someone has posted here,

and I read just about every post in this thread from page 1.

Has this crazy grain/sparkle issue been fixed with the 15" MBP's?

Has the uneven illumination been fixed with the 17" MBP's?

I dont know about anyone else, but I can say that for me I went through 2 MBP's "Matte Finsih" and than figured I would save money and go for the white macbook, well that was great but the keys on the keyboard and the screen were too small so I went with the MBP Glossy and have been extremely happy.

The other thing is too is that I wear glasses "NOT COKE BOTTLE BOTTEMS" but glasses, I thought since the prescription was old it mite be me , but I asked 3 friends and family members and they all said that the 2 MBP's I had were poor display's, and that the one I have now is crystal clear and sharp. I myself never experienced uneven screen lighting or anything else.

I purchased a matte MBP last week and the screen is fine. My only real gripe is that it is slightly darker in the upper right corner near the spotlight search icon than the rest of the screen. However, the screen is VERY bright, crisp and I do not see any grain. People who have followed my post on here in the past know I'm obsessive-compulsive about quality and I have returned many a mac in the past because of this. The screen is acceptable to me but I wouldn't say the screen is the best in the industry. It is noticeably better than the screens on the new MBPs I had back in November that I returned.

So do you think that apple may have replaced those LCD's from the November/Last Quarter's batch?

I notice this too, really irritates me at times.

If you look at plain white, it is like having some muck on the screen. Reminds me of my mobile phone screen with moisture or something on it.

It isn't a problem with LCD screens since my previous HP Laptop screen was fine.
