iFixit wrote about the speaker grills in their teardown here, https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/MacBook+Pro+13-Inch+Touch+Bar+Teardown/73480#s148011. However, since they wrote it initially they have updated with

"Alright, most of these holes are cosmetic, but after yanking out the tweeters in the following step, it's clear that some of these are through-holes that carry sound out of the Mac's enclosure."

Also a comment on that article says the following

"It looks to me like these speakers are simply ported— a common technique used in home theater speakers to achieve bigger sound. Also, the way this is laid out the speakers are further away from the logic board too, which might allow Apple to crank the bass further up, knowing that potentially chip-breaking low-frequency sound waves have more distance to dissipate."

So maybe it's not as bad as it sounds.

Does any one know if it changes to shipped once it's in the destination country? I read that somewhere. I've been lucky with day one delivery from Apple before.

My BTO MacBook changed to P4S a couple of days ago with estimated delivery of 17th to 24th.

I'm not expecting it to come tomorrow, but if it changes to shipped when it lands in the U.K. there is a chance for Friday?

Chance = 1%

I wasn't much fussed about the fake grilles until I just read that on the non-Touch Bar model they're not fake and apparently sound better. Another pundit rates the 12" MacBook speakers as better than any of the Pros'. The mind boggles.

Geez I hope the 12" MacBook ones are not better, I'll get to compare against mine

Ordered 1st of November, delivery to middle Europe: dec 7 -14, no charges and no changes yet.

Anyone in that timeframe charged already?

Looking at how many are cosmetic vs. real, it really is a token gesture.

I'll reserve judgement until I hear them but fake speaker grilles just seems so wrong. It's not even like they look good!

I can live with some pre-orders in a particular region getting to the customer early, just as long as Apple honour the projected delivery window on ours. After all, they have got to reach *somewhere* first, right?

But I am annoyed if stores anywhere are getting them for general sale before the first couple of tranches of pre-orders have even been delivered. It seems stupendously shoddy logistic planning by Apple if true.

Oh my god... a few minutes ago finally switched to "Preparing for Shipment" to Düsseldorf, Germany !!!!
Ordered right after keynote with original delivery time 16-23 Nov.
So looks like next week I will hold the beast in my hands :)

I could have sworn I read somewhere that those grilles were for ventilation primarily, and the reason I remember that is I was surprised they weren't speaker grilles.

So maybe they are not actually fake speaker grilles. They are just not speaker grilles....

I have actually just spent an hour watching unboxing videos. Then checked my order status. Nope. Still processing. My window starts on Friday. I do realize that Apple has a window for a reason but... aren't you supposed to exceed expectations, Apple? Aren't you supposed to be the Holy Grail of overpriced computer experience? Apple, Apple, wherefore art thou Apple?

The holes don't actually go through the chassis though, except for a very small part so that's unlikely I think
