Anytime between now and February 12th seems plausible. The March 17th date does not. I had expected to see it at MacWorld, and have been hoping to see it every week since.

As others already intimated, I seriously doubt they are holding back due to other events happening, and I also agree that'll happen with little fanfare. I don't expect to see anything Earth shattering in this release, though I would really like a blue-ray drive (slim chance).

hmmm

I was about to purchase a MBP this month and now seeing that all this is going on I'm thinking about waiting a few more weeks. Does anyone know if I do go buy the current MBP at the stores if the prices will drop when the new one comes out (Will I be able to get the difference back if it's within the first few weeks)? I just don't want to go pay $3000- on a notbook only to see the next week it drop to $2000- ya know?

Depending upon the reseller, you may have a little more leeway than directly from Apple, but I would check their policies. Though Apple does sell some older and refurbished machines, it seems like this represents a bigger piece of the pie for outlets like MacMall and MacWarehouse than Apple. (Any insights?)

With Apple, if you purchase from a retail store you should be able to get the difference back within the two week return window if the newer version is made available for sale. (You'll have a little more work ahead of you if the newer MBP is just introduced, but not made available for order.) If you're buying from Apple and are near an Apple Store, I'd suggest going to the retail store rather than Apple.com; if you're going to return your machine or seek a refund of money after a price drop, the transaction will be quicker through the retail store.

Either way, you're HIGHLY UNLIKELY to see a $1000 drop, but good luck, whatever you decide.

Hopefully the MBP gets updated soon. I plan on buying one either this month or early March and it would suck to buy one and then have it updated a few days or so later.

in uk last mbp update they dropped the price ....$100 or more...because was a crap update from 2.16 to 2.2 ...????,... why bother ????

You sure Apple wasn't just giving you guys a bit of a break because of the drop in the value of the US $? That would explain why there was no price reduction in the US.

I just had a dream, that they increased the cost of a MBP to US$2200

But don't worry, my dreams don't come true.

Abe will be my wallpaper

I've been waiting so long that I want Abe Lincoln's exhumed corpse to personally deliver it to me on the 12th. :D

I think I'll wait up through february, and if it isn't out by then, its XPS time for me

sorry about your life.

Honestly, I think release dates for non-drastic updates and such should be stated at least 2 or 3 months before release.

I got a biti ticked when I got my Macbook with a GMA 950(?), and then in december it because the X1300,w hich sucks, but is much better.

the longer the wait, the more possibility of a major revision. I hope it doesnt come until this summer

Seriously, there will be no major revision until Montevina. Why? Because that's when intel is going to massively shrink the size required for it's logic board designs. Sources cite 25% - 40% smaller! Apple literally can't use Montevina without a redesign.

Timing however, is your enemy. Expect Apple to unleash this beast well into the second half of the year.

This is irritating for myself in particular as I hate getting old technology, though the low watts on the Penryn should be good. I must buy a laptop within the next month (that whole 'needing it for work' thing)

The update you're referring to was from 2.16 to 2.2 Santa Rosa. Meaning there were some hardcore CPU architecture improvements beyond the 40 Mhz increase in clock speed.

Clock speed is not everything, just as megapixels are not everything when it comes to digital cameras. People always want to over-simplify.

I'm in the same boat with some of you guys. I won't buy it if it's not a new design. I believe the MBP is a little stale and needs a brand new design.:D

I'm at the point of giving up and buying something else.
I may have to turn to the Dark Side.
At least I'll be able to run 3DStudio Max without worrying about the graphics driver being underclocked.

A little currency conversion

Great - Safari & MacRumors just killed my carefully crafted post by means of some login error.

Well then, I'll make it short. On the one hand, the dollar is really weak with 1.00€ = $1.48. On the other, Apple does sell the standard MBP for 1899€ in the German Apple Store vs. $1999 in the US Apple Store, and the German price is net price + 19% VAT. But do some multiplications and divisions and you'll see that in Germany, Apple still charges 18% more for the MBP than in the US.

So I will probably buy at a reseller, just like I did with my Mac mini (saved me 200€ back then). The reseller I'm thinking of charges 3000€ for a maxed out MBP (including 3yr warranty) vs. 3500€ in the Apple Store. Now I only need a way to get around the insane tax rates that are imposed on us poor Europeans. :D

A lot of rumours agree with you (which kind of sucks for me too). However, is it possible that Apple redesigns the MBP with this upcoming Penryn launch while also making it possible for the Montevina chipset to work with the new redesign? (i.e. redesign the MBP so that it will work with both the Penryn and the Montevina chips)

I'm curious...

Yeah I think people (including me) are finally starting to realise that there isn't going to be a redesign in this update - whenever that will be...

This whole new Count of Monte Cristo thing sounds like it will demand its own redesign. Drat!!

But then will they redesign the MacBook and the MBP at the same time?

To be honest, the MacBook is doing so well right now, there is no point redesigning it until at least Sept etc.
