I am still using my old Pismo. What a great computer. I bought it in 2001 just after the G$ powerbook was released. I dashed down the shop and paid Aus$4,000 when the new machine was over Aus$6,000, by fluke I bought what was probably the best laptop Apple made. I upgraded it two years ago with bigger HD and more RAM and it still performs well. The DVD drive was terrible and the batteries haven't worked for at least three years. Unfortunately it is now classed as "vintage", the G3 doesn't run the latest software, and the screen is getting very very dark. Time to upgrade.
I have been waiting for the new MBP since last July when I heard about Penryn.
A lot of discussion and in many ways I think you are all right. I suggest a release in the next 4-6 weeks for a Penryn upgrade.
Here in Bali you cannot buy a Macbook Pro other than the very base model. They are all sold out. None are coming in from Singapore which suggests that there is no stock all over South East Asia.
They won't release until they are ready and the logistics are huge. They have to run down existing stocks all over the world and they have to have new stocks all distributed and ready to go.
They won't release next week because it's too close to the Macbook Air and they won't release on the 12th because that is the birthday of the Sultan of Brunei's favourite dog (Fido assured me it would be late Feb or early March).
No this won't be a major upgrade but they have to get the Penryn out to keep the Macbook competitive with all the other dark side machines that now have 45nm chips.
Technology companies have to have a constant stream of new innovations so they can keep bringing out new models and keep a carrot in front of the buyers. They would be foolish to use all their carrots at once.
Montevena will be the next generation Macbook later in the year.
