That's far away from sure. I don't know why everybody expects an update with montevina. It's a possibility, but not more or less likley than getting an upgrade now.
it all depends how tight is apple working with intel. And how much money u want to invest. Is it worthwhile to modify montevina to ur needs or do have time to wait for any further chipset.

If they want to optimise a notebook for montevina, then the design is ready by now and they're up to protypes and getting ready for production soon, if one really expect them to be ready in june!!
The process from desgin to production is not gonna happen in a couple of month.

I for one don't believe will be there in june. try september. regardless it would be foolish for apple not to move to the montevina platform. there are major benefits in over design and import laptop features such as reduced power consumption and take advantage of the 1066mhz fsb penryn chips.

the alternative is to wait until freakin' mid-2009 to build around the nehalem processors.

For apple to do anything other than release updates with penryn procs soon, release montevina updates 3rd quarter and nehalem procs next year would require a level of collusion on apple and intels part that is so unlikely it's not worth considering.

although, if apple were to move to montevina early, ahead of other manufacturers, it would allow them to justify ram prices, with ddr3. :D

Well, with Time Capsule supposed to come out in Feb. and with only one Tuesday left in Feb., I think we know what this tuesday's release is gonna be. :(

For those calling for merging these Page 2 Rumors discussion threads:

Can that really be done? Since each of these threads originated in a Page 2 Rumor story on the website, it doesn't make sense to delete them or merge them, because then that particular news item would no longer be represented in the forums. Right?

I can tell you when the new MBP's will come out...

Its one of these dates
Feb 26
March 3, 10, 17, 24, 31
April 7, 14, 21, 28

I didn't say the current one is out of date! If you can wait though, there should be more than jsut penryn involved to make it worth it. For me, just having bigger standard hard drive and a larger graphics memory standard for less price is worth it. Example:

Current midline MBP: $2500 (Maybe as low as $2000 if your a way good bargain hunter)
2.4 Ghz
160G HDD
256 graphics ram

The next line LOWER model will MOST LIKELY HAVE:
2.5 Ghz
160 HDD
256 graphics ram

They're about the same, so you might as well wait and get a magnetic latch, and a few other possible upgrades. PLUS, as a student I can get the lower model for $1800, so if the next lower model is as I predicted, then I'll be getting more for $200 less. THATS A BIG DEAL!!!!!!!!!

NOTICE; THE CURRENT MODEL IS AN EXCELLENT MACHINE, HOWEVER IT MAKES NO SENSE TO BUY NOW UNLESS YOU NEED IT. PATIENCE USUALLY PROVES ITSELF!

and if your someone like me wanting this thing to last all 4 years of college, every scrap of update counts. But regardless, It just makes sense to wait.

Errr because the existing MBP is a pretty powerful laptop and is available with some pretty good deals at the moment. For that extra 5% processing power depending upon the Penryn CPU model Apple actually choose you could be enjoying your laptop now.

Just all seems a bit like badge snobbery to me. I can't have an existing MBP because it will suddenly be way out of date apparently. The current Merom and Penryn are from the same architectural family. The Penryn is a relatively minor update involving a die shrink, slightly larger cache and SSE4. If you're spending all your time encoding then you'll probably notice SSE4 apart from that I'd defy anyone to tell the difference between the current and impending updated MBP.

The really stupid thing is that any PC is limited by it's hard drive speed and then FSB. This even more so with the Core 2 architecture. You'll notice a much bigger bump in speed when Montevina is released.

As for the current MBP being out of date because it doesn't have the very latest generation of the same family CPU in it. Well that's a bit daft. Just remember that by the time you get your Penryn home you'll buying a notebook that will be out of date within three months and will already have an out of date graphics card.

Here here! to patience. Though I need to get one before march 14...

The process from desgin to production is not gonna happen in a couple of month.

First, Apple, has been "modifying" all the previous platforms to use them in current laptops (Santa Rosa included).

Second: most likely switching platforms does not require redesign for the whole laptop. MBPs have had the same design for years through all the platforms changes. The redesign rumor is based on the fact that the current one is several years old and it is not inline with other models of the laptop family.
A complete redesign won't happen in a couple of months, but as that is for the most part independent of the platform or chipset or processor that's inside, thsy could have been working on that for months or years now. Unless they are going to do something like a MBAPro, there won't be any problem to release a Montevina MBP in summer.

hmm....my time frame is getting tight!

i need my new macbook pro by March the 14th....
and since i live in germany apple usually needs some more time to get it here.
mba was announced january the 15th and I saw it at gravis last thursday (21st). but apple said it will be avaible two weeks after macworld. So they needed between 2 and 3 weeks to get it to gravis......

if a new mbp is announced by february the 26th and avaible immediately it will probably make it here by march the 14th. We'll see how fast the apple store is....

wish me luck

same with me buddy.. i'm also from germany and need the new MBP immediatly.

I just read that the iPhone SDK is delayed 1-3 weeks... sound pretty because of this the SDK won't be released next week.. So tuesday is a possible date for the release.

Let's just hope for it..

do you already own a mac or even a mbp? Or are you a windows user getting ready to switch?

do you have any experiences with apple/gravis getting macs over here?

thanks :)

I'm finally starting to realize how hard it is to use an iMac for Final Cut Studio 2. I tried using Color, and when I imported it back to Final Cut I couldn't play it back because of something about my drives being to slow or something. I don't know, but it's lame as hell.

So I should be getting my MBP on Wednesday, and if they do update this Tuesday (which I still hope they do because I would like the newest one), then that'll take even longer. I kind of hope they don't because I don't want to spend hours in the Apple Store editing over there. lol.
