I think it was a mistake to drop SD and HDMI, not to mention Magsafe, and if the new machines bring back all of this, I think Apple will be recognizing that it was a mistake as well. I can't stand having to bust out my XQD/SD reader every time I need to load content off an SD card. Many laptops on the market have HDMI and SD built in.

Tbh I think it was likely Jony Ive who pushed for the removal of this stuff, the crappy keyboard that never worked right, all of that, just to make the thinnest flimsiest possible machine. Jony is gone, and now Apple is bringing some sensibility to the table, along with beautiful design. I'm all for it.
I am actually happy that my MBA just has the 2 ports it does, works perfectly for me, but everyone is different and that is ok ... Monday shall be interesting

Happy to hear that difference between 14" and 16" will be narrowed. Hopefully that means they're bringing the 16" price down and not pulling up the 14" price LOL!

Now the dilemma I have, do I get a RAM upgrade or go for 16". In terms of resale value, in a few years time, do we think buyers will appreciate the extra ram?
Can definitely see them 'splitting the difference' - 14" goes up a bit to ~$1,999, 16" comes down a bit to ~$2,199 or so.

Yes I agree. But let me ask you -- why not add useful ports directly to the machine, if it can be done with few to no real sacrifices? If your Air was the same price, same form factor, same everything, and also had an SD card slot, are you telling me you'd like it less? You already said you own devices with SD slots, strikes me that it would be useful. And it's a small, barely-noticeable slot, not like a big lump or anything.

No, a new charging brick isn't needed. A USB-C to magsafe cable is. If it's a whole new brick, and no backwards compatibility, then apple's just getting greedy.

Ethernet on brick? well, that would mean it's a USB-C connection at some level. But seriously...why inflict wired ethernet on everyone when it's a minority use case.

Well, to be fair, they're doing that with the SD slot too....

because your assumptions are not correct, for one, it would be slightly thicker (definitely for HDMI), the component take up room and thus reducing the size of the battery, and, the price will go up, there is circuitry and components required that no-one (esp Apple) will give you for free ... I get your point, and if a laptop would be my only/main computer, maybe, but for me the MBA is a travel companion/couch computer and the dongle takes neither space nor adds weight when traveling...

I'm so excited for this but as someone who needs both Mac and windows for work, M1 is a pain in the butt.

for me it's portability and ram over screen size. if i need a bigger screen - well at home i do have an external monitor.
Fair, depends on how big the 16" is. I have an UW at home, I'm just thinking of whether I'll appreciate the bigger screen size when I'm on the road. It also depends on the base specs of the 16".

Aww don’t be rude, I feel for the price they’ll charge, they should make them a bit more gaming friendly lol. Love my iPad Pro though. Got my Xbox for gaming, iPad Pro as my main computer and my iPhone.

So as much as it would be cool to see some more gaming potential from these to make them more of an all rounder, I’m aware it’s not the main point of them
Heh just kidding obviously, sorry if it sounded rude, my post record is not very engaging in the "serious" department.

I wholeheartedly agree, but at this point it's more wishful thinking than anything else (bearing by Apple Arcade state and Mac neglecting AAA gaming for over a decade). Issue is complex though, most talented studios ditched Apple already, don't blame them.

I'm actually quite excited for this. Mostly because lots of leaks this year have been wrong. I think they will surprise some people.
