I'm a freelance design professional and I rely on this expensive laptop to earn my living and I've had a worried Apple care seller phone me three times this week to sell £300 worth of insurance for a 6 month old machine that is still, supposedly in hardware warranty and I'm getting these sorts of problems:

What do you think? Any advice? in The UK where the living ain't easy.

I had been having a lot of trouble when plugging in an external display. Color issues, kernel panics every time USB was connected/disconnected and not restarting correctly. On the phone, the rep said they would probably replace the logic board. This is my second Macbook Pro in a year and a half. The first kept having power issues and was finally replaced in April. 4 months old and this one is out already...
Does anyone know if I can request a replacement with a different computer like an iMac or Mac pro?

I wonder if the supposed update in September will see a switch to ATI graphics cards?

If not I think I'll just go for a Mac Pro, I can't really afford to, but I doubt Apple would acknowledge the problem even if Nvidia announced every chip they'd ever made would explode within 20 minutes of use...

I got a Q1 2008 Mac Pro after returning my old MBP three times and, on the 4th return, refusing to leave the store until I got my money back. I'm pretty sure swapping for a different model is not common policy, and they probably just wanted me out of their store (as it was stuffed with potential customers and I was getting pretty loud). It's worth a try, though I'd recommend doing it in person.

Coincidentally, I later swapped the Mac Pro for another (wake/reboot problem), and nearly returned my new MBP two days ago after experiencing what I thought was a hardware problem. I'm usually a pretty likable guy, but I'm pretty sure Apple wants me dead.

^^^ I heard of the "lemon law" that after 3 replacements, they can give you credit back to spend as you please (on another machine).

I've seen people on this forum sell their Apple Giftcards with $2,000 on it - I assume after taking back their computers a few times...

Wow - that's bad. My previous boss' is just constantly locking up - she's going to the Apple Store this week to have them look into it.

Maybe wait until the new ones are out? Then complain enough to get one of those in exchange?

ahhh. That might explain it. I thought it only applied to automobiles though?

Good point about waiting for the new model but need the thing to work to earn plus in the UK where lemon law probably doesn't apply. Not much does except the bit where we get to pay twice as much as anyone else for anything. (Check out Adobe Photoshop etc prices for America and UK and do the conversion. They charge the UK twice as much and THEN put tax on it.)

However, anyone know when a new model is expected?

Plus really like your quote!
Huge Stargate fan and remember that episode!

Is there anything new coming from NVidia about this ?

Currently my Macbook Pro is still running great. It is more then a year old but I bought Apple Care this time. Lucky me I did. I hope it will continue to run great but I am really worried about all these news and that Apple is not commenting and deleting threads on their discussion boards. Thats really a bad thing to do.

Mine is also still running great and I am hooked up to a Cinema Display to boot. Just get AppleCare and you'll have peace of mind for the next three years. If your Macbook Pro doesn't fail within those first three years, it's a safe bet that it won't give you any afterwords.

Don't you also earn over twice as much as we do with the conversion? i.e. $2US for every 1 Pound? But I can see your frustration when it comes to price gouging overseas, that would be very annoying. I guess you live on a very expensive island :p And fwiw I do understand that you pay twice as much after having a look at the UK store. $2600 for the entry level MBP is ridiculous, $700 more than US, plus I'm sure they rape you in taxes.
