I like that a lot of rumours are floating around. Hopefully this means they are being released this week *crosses everything*

Long live matte!

matte vs. glossy is a preference like chocolate vs. vanilla. Neither is inherently better, but many people have a VERY strong preference for one over the other. I'd eat no-name store brand chocolate ice cream before I'd eat even haagen daz brand vanilla. I personally cannot stand glossy in any environment other than a completely dark room. Some people have little preference in screen type, but many people strongly prefer one over the other.

Apple definitely should offer consumers an option of matte or glossy. I will not buy a laptop that has a glossy screen. I know that someone here mentioned that you can get an anti-glare coating to put over your screen, but the pictures I've seen of them have not made them look like they do a good enough job that I'd be happy with. Notice that they call it an anti-glare filter film, not a matte film. In fact even in their own product promo picture on that page you can see insane amounts of reflections coming of of it!

So basically no one knows what the hell these things are going to look like. Every new rumor contradicts the one before it. We won't know until at least the night before the release.

Fingers crossed for Monday that we get a proper image!

I believe many people will be disappointed by the October upgrade, because I think Apple is going to update the MBP only in January... Or at least it will receive "the" big spec bump only in January anyway (quad-core, bluray, etc).

You really have to try it out before you judge. There's a reason why cell phones, gameboys and iPods all have glossy screens; you can use them in sunlight.

Hum. Can you please imagine to yourself a pocket device with a matte screen? It would be destroyed in seconds! THAT is why we don't use matte on gameboys, or iPod etc.

Bingo! That was exactly what I was thinking! Now I can see an actual mockup of it instead of it just being in my

It looks good but that completely black display does not seem to "fit" well with the rest of design. Maybe if the mock-up only had a black bezel just like an aluminium iMac, that would be better?

I love the single button Mac

I love the single button trackpad and the idea of double finger + click to open contextual menu. The area for clicking is bigger, thus easier for lazy people like me.
If the new MacBook Pro is shipped with the ugly split button, I think I will buy the old one.
Single button rocks!

We've neglected to post the image since we felt it was clearly fake.

"neglected" does not mean "decided not to do", it means "forgot to do".

In fact, holding down ctrl-command-d while mousing over neglected, gives a great usage guide.

It's built right into Tiger and Leopard.

Single button is crap. If it has two buttons then I would be very happy.

O'Grady also believes the new MacBook Pro will be thinner and "as much as a half-inch narrower" than existing models. The space savings will reportedly come from a smaller bezel (border) around the screen.

Narrower: YES!

Less taper means less compromise and (hopefully) better heat dissipation.

Ooo... MBA keyboard: IMO, black chiclets on silver doesn't look as pro as the old keyboard. (hopes it grows on me)

Two button trackpad: YES! :)

Smaller trackpad? That I don't get. (prototypes, I know)

I actually think black keyboard on a silver laptop ("pro" or not) looks very good. Do you like the look of the MacBook Air?

Inovation

ive read a lot of these posts over the last day and i agree with a lot of people about the idea that the trackpad will be shrunk. This will be a setback if indeed this happens which i highly doubt unless it is necessary to make the whole machine smaller. i also dont believe i would like tappered edges but this is just a personal choice though tappered edges do look great it might just not be viable.

Though looking at the trackpad and the 'dock' which is depicted in the 'mockup' is actually an extremely innovative idea. I have actually been thinking about this the last couple of months and find it an interesting innovation which could be implemented into even the base laptops as it possesses many advantages over the style and layout of current laptops
If this happens or something similar i can see it being implemented in MANY laptops especially over the world as it provides more room on the actual screen which is essential on laptops. It also decreases the time of opening up applications not having to maneuver the mouse to click on the application rather simply pressing the correct application on the trackpad or possibly somewhere close to it (maybe a little list type screen may be used for this separate to the trackpad). it will just de-clutter the actual screen so that it can be used for the actual applications the are being run rather than all the bits and pieces required to open and search through to open it all.

another idea is for all the folder searching to be done in the same or another little screen near the trackpad so that no application must be minimized to open certain windows while seraching for music/word docs etc. its just an idea but i believe this could be created in the near future if enough interest is invested in it.

Though of course it will need to be created in a way that does not now clutter the keyboard and trackpad as this would just be annoying and defeat the whole purpose.

please post me your comments/ideas or question to 08greigm@marash.qld.edu.au

How is that possible?
Does technology really moves this fast?

If you've ever heard of Akihabara district (Japan) and its hundreds of tech shops, then you should know that Japan's consumer tech is about half or even a whole year ahead of the US. When Western manufacturers were still struggling to make 2-megapixel camera phones cheap, Japan already had a 7MP camera phone on sale.

The 2 inch HD display may be expensive (or a prototype even. I myself haven't heard of it), but it is completely possible.

I actually think black keyboard on a silver laptop ("pro" or not) looks very good. Do you like the look of the MacBook Air?

I like it very much... maybe it's because I haven't seen the new MBP in the flesh yet. I'll buy it (my first Mac :D) whether it has the old keyboard or new keyboard.

hm, i was totally into getting a 13.3 inch notebook. either macbook or MBP.

however if they make the 15 inch MBP by half an inch less wide and tall and maybe a bit slimmer (not necessarily) then it would be interesting again to me.

if the sizes aren't too different (just put a MB on top a MBP and you see that a slightly smaller MBP would already close to a MB in size) then i would go for the most powerful notebook with the best screen even it's more expensive.

it will be an interesting october......

Since when does pro have anything to do with looks? If it gets the job done, then it shouldn't matter. Hell, I'll edit video on a Fisher Price laptop if it does what I need it to do, provided that it does it better than another, prettier laptop.

What do you guys think of the following (i.e., will they exist)

1. Black MBA keys?
2. Glass trackpad?
3. Tapered edges?
4. Quad-core for MBP?

And lastly, do you guys believe that a new MB or MBP will release by the 14th of October? Regardless of any of it's features, if it's the same as current model of MBP with a higher clock-core speed (for the sake of example) or whatever, do you guys see a new model releasing by the 14th?

First post on here, hope this is ok. :D

1 - i dont believe they will use black keys i think tehy will stick with the white i pursonally dont liek the black keys
2 - i think glass trackpads COULD be really good if they are gaurenteed not to break or scratch, this would be the only letdown for me
3 - id would prefer not to but i wouldnt mind it, tapered creates less room inside which could result in less of something
4 - quad-core would be good if they can take advantage of all 4 cores ( hopefully done in snow-leopard) though i still want core 2 duo's for the price not many people need quad-core at all and if you do then well think again, most people only need single cores

The 12 inch PB G4 maximized its space for its relatively large trackpad (shame on you eeePC and co.). Even if Apple shrunk the MBP a bit there is still a lot of space for a multi-touch-worthy trackpad.

I'm fine with Apple tapering the MBP though they should solve the MBP's cooling problems first before aggravating it even more.

I also want the dock on the touchpad (or some place that won't increase clutter). The dock wastes a good percentage of the screen especially on the MacBook's limited resolution. I want that or something that's more sophisticated than the Dock's auto-hide option.

I dont think that there will be any major changes in the MBPs iMacs or AIRs at all.
To be honest I think it will be just macbooks that will get some boosting.
The rest are just fine, and if they do change the MBP and it looks anything like that picture I will be holding on to my MBP for the next 10 years.
