Hmmmm. I think we are having a failure to communicate, to quote "Cool Hand Luke".

I am not worried about the office: it is when "out and about", that is when I, and often others, are not at our office. Rather in a coffee shop, or in a meeting room where for the past 10 years I have never worried about having a dongle for a display...Heck if I am in the office, I type on one of my original 1987 - 1989 IBM M keyboards.....

So, and correct me if my math is wrong, there are three ports to begin with. IF I use one for charging (not the MagSafe), that leaves two, one less than my current MBP if I am charging.

Yet, in the end, it continues to be for me, and I am certain others, about the loss of versatility by having dedicated ports for video out, card readers and MagSafe. As I wrote elsewhere, at first in 2016 with the then new MBP, I was unhappy at the loss of MagSafe, but since then have come to appreciate the versatility. And given the speed bump at the time, I have not had issues with speed of ports - it will always be faster than the last iteration, and we had no complaints.
Fair point. I would still just use the MagSafe for charging as there aren’t any benefits to use usb c.

And even with only two ports I don’t really see the usability in a cafeteria? Usb disks?

I too would prefer to only have Thunderbolt ports and use dongles when/if necessary.
I do like magsafe a lot, but would prefer all thunderbolt ports and a magsafe dongle.
It aggrieves me that I will be paying for a useless (to me) SD card slot and HDMI port and I will likely need to buy a thunderbolt hub to increase the number of thunderbolt ports.
I’ll just have to live with it…

Well, in tight areas, depending upon meeting rooms configurations, lack of space what all the electrical outlet is on and many, many more considerations, the example to charge on either the right or left of the machine is an option I have come to appreciate. And as I have noted earlier, if a colleague forgets a cable, or someone doesn't bring a cable because they thought it was unnecessary, one can always share a usb-c cable with XPS toting colleagues or vice versa.

Yes, thumb drives, hard discs, other devices. There are enough times in my work when I need the ports.

Agree.

It seems a very odd choice by Apple. Yet, it seems consistent with so many changes over the years that just drive me up the wall with Apple.

That is how many other people felt when Apple removed all of the ports and only gave us the choice of 2 or 4 USB-C ports. This seems like a return to more balance.

I am uncertain as to balance or just longing for an established way or indeed an old way of doing things......Our designer after a bit of an adjustment admitted she carries all types of equipment in her bag. So one all encompassing USB-C hub with a card reader did not bother her.

I am just frustrated I have bandwidth taken up by ports I, and most people I know, will seldom or never use, and will pay for loss of versatility. Yet, each to his or her own. And no doubt it will swing the other way the next cycle. Only hope the iPhone will bring back the cowardly 3.5mm jack.

Now I just have to stop looking at the notch that stick out like, well, "canine's orbs".

no need. as stated before. you gain more Bandwidth in these 3 Thunderbolt ports than you had in 4 ports in the last model
2021 macbook pro= 120Gbs/3= 40Gbps max in every port
2019 macbook pro= 80Gbps/4= 20Gbps max output when using every port

We agree to disagree.
