Prettay much.

Having worked in a reseller for the past year and a half... especially having sold a fair number of the Airs, I can safely agree that for most people, most of the time, there isn't much a need for the optical drive.

You cannot be serious, are you? I mean check the top 5 sellers in the apple store, the air isn't even on the top 5. Base on your logic, just because a lot of people buy the white macbook with the optical drive, I can safely agree that for most people, most of the time, there is a need for the optical drive

2.i7 is overkill for you. i5 will do just fine.
3. Would you use the Superdrive?
4. No.

2) Thanks
3) Yes I would...I never buy music online...it's easier to pick up the Cd...and if I do download off of iTunes, I burn a Cd...So the 16 GB SSD installed for what I'm going to do should be enough?
4) Are you 100% sure? I was pretty sure Intel told distributors to use the 0 and 1 port (which are the only 2 that work 100%), and any other ports WILL wear down over time.

Looking forward to the real thing! These specs are making it tempting to buy a new laptop! But wait... what about the iPad2? So many decisions.

Craigslist has been the fastest way to unload my laptops these past years. You get your cash right away, none of that online transaction and shipping headache.

I have also sold a few there, but not without hassle. if you put too much detailed info they flag thinking your a dealer. if you don't put enough info they flag. if they don't like your price they flag.

Apple wouldn't put out a computers with ports that would wear down over time for a known reason.

I doubt they will have just a SSD. It will be for the OS and they will have a secondary mechanical drive for data and apps.

Firewire

I pray to god they haven't removed firewire, and all will be well in the universe.

thicker?! I don't think so

I just don't get the point of making a thinner laptop, I have no such need for a thin laptop (doesnt mean that other people don't though), and would rather have a laptop that can fulfill my need. (Quad core, blu-ray, great graphic card and a great OS)

Ports don't just wear down over time. And Do you honestly think if this were a problem, that companies the sizes of Intel and Apple wouldn't know this and make sure it not a problem? Whatever setup you can get from Apple will be 100% fine.

As for the 16gb SSD that you're asking about, chances are you won't get to use any of that space at all, and will only be using the HDD/SSD option for all your data.

How do the Sandy Bridge i3s compare to previous Core2Duo models? 12 hours of battery sounds great. And now that the 13" has a decent resolution screen, I'm inclined to get it so long as the GPU is decent.

Is it Sandy Bridge i3 or or the existing Core i3, SB might just be for the 15, 17?

+1. My 2010 mbp is going to feel like a piece of junk when I see the shiny new ones.

Why? You own a great laptop. I'm sure it has more than enough horsepower to meet your needs. I use some fairly CPU/GPU intensive applications and I can tell you I don't feel the need to upgrade my 2009 MacBook Pro with its ageing 2.8 Ghz Core2Duo processor.

I did do a clean install on my MPB laptop recently though. I'm not sure if Apple computers are supposed to suffer from the same bitrot that destroys Windows installs over time. But I was encountering a lot of beachballs and generally sluggish performance especially 5-10 mins into a reboot or wake from sleep. I tried all the usual fixes. Disk Utility, Fix Permissions, Reset PRAM, cleaning caches etc. Nothing worked until I did a clean reinstall. Now the machine is running like a dream again.

These new MBPs to look nice. But I don't need one. And I won't be rushing to blow thousands on a new laptop when my existing model is more than adequate for my needs. I used to buy a new Windows laptop every 18 months. I definitely no longer feel the need since I started using OSX as my primary operating system. And that's a good thing as far as I'm concerned. :)

Yes, putting features just so sales people have a longer list of things to rattle down is the traditional Apple way.

See, if you had an option to replace the ODD with a second battery, would that be worth it?
On how many days would you need to carry an external ODD with you vs. on how many days would you need to carry an extra battery (or the charger) with you?
If you would need the ODD twice per year, the longer battery live however once per week, would the answer not be a no-brainer?
Same with storage space, often not having to carry an external drive with you is worth much more than not having to carry an external ODD with you.

I completely agree (assuming you mean it in a cynical sort of way, which is not completely obvious). Apple's obsession with and focus on optical drives doesn't make any sense and I bet they don't have actual consumer surveys or other market research to back it up. I think we have to get used to the fact that most companies, now Apple included, have imperfect product management.

That's a pretty lousy res on the 13".

Sony Vaio Z can manage 1920x1080 on their 13inch model.

Not a bad res?! Yeah, if you have Superman eyes, a microscope, or resolution independence, none of which are a feature of OS X.

It took me a while to get used to 1440x900 on a 17"-in screen (the iMac G5) back in the day; I'm sure my eyes would freak it to see that on 13" instead. I'm happy on one hand that Apple keeps pushing pixel density, but until there's better resolution independence (can I at least sensibly enlarge text, if not widgets and whatnot?) in OS X, I think we're reaching a practical limit here.

Please kindly excuse my stupidity & ignorance.

Regarding that 16GB SSD that holds the Mac OS, I'm wondering how will that kinda "work out" if I want to install multiple OS on the new MBP, given that I keep that 16GB SSD & the standard HDD that comes with it, without upgrading that HDD to a SSD....

Aaaaaaand, what do you planning on plugging into that port? Don't get me wrong, I want it too, but in the short-term, I don't know that it warrants your excitement.

aaaaaaand did you not see the patent that Apple filed for an Integrated lightpeak-magsafe combo adapter where the AC adapter served as a hub capable of taking in USB, Displayport, DVI, Ethernet et al?

This is the start of something big™.

Next OS goes on the standard drive with everything else.

Not necessarily thinner overall, but having a taper toward the front like the Air makes typing much more comfortable than for example on the current generation Pro. I really hope they will get rid of the wrist-cutter edge...

I can't see most of that actually happening.

An option to replace ODD with SSD means either two different unibodies, a MBP with a useless slit in it, or a MBP with a plug of some sort in it's slit.

None of those sound like Apple's style.
