my aunt did the exact same thing! people these days need to move foreward

My mother said the same thing...she's like I don't want that thin piece of isht...it has no CD drive...lol

well my mom just bought an ipod classic and she has a huge collection of CDs she wants to rip.

Also she always loves sharing pictures with my grandmother, who doesn't know how to use a computer yet she knows how to put on a dvd on a dvd player to watch them on her tv.

And I will safely say my mom represents a huge sample of what is considered an average person.

I told my mom an external ODD is 29 bucks on Amazon. She said "oh I feel better now" lol

ODD MUST DIE!!!

Ok I understand people till use it.

But Jeez!!! It is so inefficient! Optical Discs are like Bottled Water. ODDs take a so much space inside laptops. Discs get used like once then thrown away. read/write speeds are slow.

For the people who do really need one, not the people who think they need one, but the people who actually do need one for whatever. should get an external ans suffer their inconvenience for the good of the world

Interesting take.. but don't you think that competitive pressure to provide the access will force them to keep the access available?

compet..competition? As in.......
...........Alternatives?

Hahahahaha.

Nope.

Not the way our country is run. Small ISPs (when done right) may cater to the local scene but the good ones are few and far in between. The giants are free to do what they please. If megaconglomerateISP is the only game in town (which is true for many) than expect low speeds and high prices. IF you are in a better off area that just happens to have megaconglomerateISPs fighting for the same dollars than you may be able to get access to some decent speeds.

Neither matters in the grand scheme of things. All the ISP has to do is march down to congress and say :

Look at this powerpoint presentation I just made on the plane ride here. Folks, this is broadband usage (arrow going up). This is available capacity (arrow going down). If we don't stop this R.I.G.H.T NOW, there WILL be consequences.
DONE.

They can do whatever they want at that point. Crush competition, raise prices, drag feet on upgrades, disconnect 'heavy' users, etc.

or maybe your a pretend buyer living in his moms basement.
Most people on here act like they are buying them and never do.

Awesome update for the 13" if this is true. I held off the previous generation due to the core2 processor and lower res screen. 1440x900 is just about perfect for a 13" screen. SSD for the system drive is genius-- you don't need more than 16gb for OSX, and everything else can be stored on a standard internal hard drive. 3 USB ports is better still. I don't have a current use for lightpeak but its cool if they're including it. Hopefully, firewire is not being dropped on the 13" model-- this is my biggest fear as I still use it for video editing. May have to spring for the 15" if they drop it from the 13" (which may be their plan if they drop the white Macbook).

For those whining, face it you can't afford a Mac anyway and are probably stay at home kids who have nothing better to do than b*tch about Apple products on web forums.

I just bought a MBP in December. I'm guessing this is too long ago for me to receive any kind of update protection; am I correct in that assumption?

Thank you in advance.

FYI:

Current 15" MacBook Pro has an option for a Matte Screen at an additional $150.

Cool story but I don't want a 15-inch nor a high-end 13-inch. I want the base model with a matte screen, that is all.

kthanksbye.

If Apple really does take the system-on-SSD route, they better have something in the OS to make it seamless for the user. Having to deal with two partitions will be hectic for the consumer.

it's "back to Mac". You'll never see the os or the drive it's on. Like iOS. Itll just be there. You'll come to think of the second ( and third if applicable to your configuration) as your first and second drives. The os drive will be out of sight out of mind.

Is it usual for Apple announce a product line(macbook pro) and then make an event the week after (ipad)? (if the rumors are true...)
IMO it seems very strange...not the :apple:way

If the external is significantly better (which it would) and the internal space is replaced with something more useful, like a decent blade SSD/more battery/better GPU/better cooling system/etc, then I would rather carry around an extra drive.

it doesnt have to be that way, isn't it? I mean if HP can put a delurcent graphic card (5830m), blu-ray drive and a quad core on their envy laptop. I am pretty sure that Apple can at least retain the optical drive.

and whats the point of having a thin laptop if it meant you have to bring out different accessories out?

Maybe when bandwidth is free like the library. Otherwise I will keep using those coasters for my disposable media consumption.

No I never said that and your putting words in my mouth...but if a big portion of professionals depends on those features than yes its a must.

And also for accountants, scientists, mathematicians, they are better off with a PC...it is what it is, but a MAC feautures Aperture, LOGIC, and FiNAL Cut, I think its safe to say it's mainly marketed for those PROFESSIONALS even though it can be used for other things.

LOL. I create HD motiongraphics and high end Keynote presentations (with embedded 1080p movies) for a living and I'd MUCH rather have another SSD drive than an ODD I rarely use. If I regularly burned movies to DVD for a living, I'd use a faster external drive than the 8x Superdrive.

P.S. When I worked for Procter & Gamble back in the '90s, I was one of the few people with a mac because there was a mac-only kick-ass statistical analysis program that I could use to analyze consumer test data. So, I don't agree with you at all and you don't speak for all high-end users.

lol, Mac OS X 10.7 won't even have a filesystem!

jk

The MBP ODD is x6?! Seriously? What's so super about that?

Alas, I figured as much. Oh well, still very happy with my new one as I hadn't updated my macbook since 2005, but it sucks for there to be a brand new, shiny one on the shelf so soon after shelling out for mine.

Thank you.

Why not sell on eBay or CL and get 70-80% of your investment back to use towards a new MBP?

If you do plan on selling, you might want to before the redesign emerges.
