I need a Superdrive personally and I don't want an external drive. I also don't know why the matte screen is such a big deal to so many, I've used glossy screens for some years now and it just never seems to be that big of a deal in reality. Maybe other environments than I work in, but I use mine outside, inside, lit, nonlit rooms, etc.

No more white MacBook?

Does that mean entry level Aluminum MacBook will now be $1099?

No, I think it’ll be like in late 2008 and early 2009, when the MacBook was aluminum as well and looked like the MacBook Pros. It’ll just not be as powerful, or expensive, as the 13" MacBook Pro. I think it will save them a lot of money on manufacturing since making two different laptops sharing a common or similar external design will be cheaper than making two completely different external designs.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

Please excuse me if this has already been mentioned (it's a long thread and I'reading it on an iPhone), but could the 16gb SSD be for iOS?
Just a thought... :-D

I wish they could filter anything related to IOS out of this thread.

If they included the external drive for free? Sure! Otherwise who wants to carry an extra drive out so you can do what you can used to do without such hassle?

If the external is significantly better (which it would) and the internal space is replaced with something more useful, like a decent blade SSD/more battery/better GPU/better cooling system/etc, then I would rather carry around an extra drive.

I think they are called preferences for a reason. What applies to you does not apply to everyone.

They will most likely have that config in the stores. If not, just order online.

He's then going to say Glossy or Matte and your going to say.........

Both...for the price of 1 ;)

I'll probably go Glossy...but I only heard 1 bad thing about them and that is they cause eye strain...but who knows I'll check em' out to make sure.

They are both great laptops, but 200 dollars is not a small difference. Also, apple laptops have way higher resale values in the future than any other laptops in the market.

Also, apple laptops are way thinner and lighter than others.

$200 is a small difference at $2K. Also, the Vaio Z has a discrete graphics card and is significantly lighter than the similar MBP.

For the average consumer now it doesn't matter if they have an ODD. However, I do realize that many ppl use it for work or school. I was just stating a point :)

I humbly think that having an ODD right now may in fact matter to the average consumer.

I was at my local BestBuy about 2 months ago & was playing with the MBP 17" demo set when a young mother with 2 kids (I assume they are middle school kids from their height & very youthful looks) came over to check out the Macs. The mother was looking at the iMacs while the 2 kids were happily marveling at the new MBAs. :D One of them called her mom over to check out the thinness & lightness of the 11" MBA. The mom came over picked it up with a "disbelieving" look, look around the length & width of the MBA & told her kids "What? This is not a good computer, there is no CD drive! Let's look at other computers." She then lead her kids over to check out the PC notebooks without even checking the rest of the MB/MBPs! I assume that she must have thought that all Apple computers do not come with optical drives after seeing the MBA without one!

I know this is something you guys may find funny &may probably laugh at the stupidity of that mother but that is actually what really happened that day. :( I'm pretty sure that family is not the only one with such reception to the lack of optical drives in notebooks as of today, even though in time, everyone will embrace the idea of having notebooks without an optical drive. :(

Where in my posts here did I refer to the Macbook Air, directly or indirectly? You are mixing up the posts of multiple people in your mind.

Maybe I quoted the wrong person, but the person I thought I quoted said this (I'm paraphrashing)

"If you don't want an optical drive buy a Macbook Air!"

That says to me that they think the only diffference between a Macbook Pro and a Macbook Air is an optical drive.

Edit: Found it. I quoted a user named MacBallin22 who said

I dont get it! if you dont want the ODD then just get a macbook air right?

This thread blew up fast!

I wanted information on the discrete GPU to be used in the 15" as well as possible i5/i7 options in them. I love the news about the resolution of both 13" and 15" being higher. 16GB SSD for OS is cool, I have a 120GB Vertex 2 ready to be put in as well as a HDD caddy for the optical drive to be replaced for the stock HDD. I'll most likely be grabbing a base 15" unless the 13" high end has i5 or GPU option... I mean what are we paying $300 more for? It has to be a better CPU option if it's anything like previous 13" models. Since there's only one i3 dual core available, it must be an i5 option...

So, how much RAM is in the 15"? i wonder if it will have an hd output. I'm also really hoping for a blu-ray player, but I'm not holding my breath

Not trying to pick a fight, but the idea is that drives are going away and you download hi-res video via the net.

I think what Apple is thinking is, external drives are dying. Everything is moving to on-demand over the net or you move data wirelessly. My take on it is they're right and 3-4 years down the road, DVD's, CD's and BluRay's will be on the way out for good.

So, given this, why worry about providing a technology that's going to die soon and work on giving us what's coming now. Just like they did with Floppies.

lovely story but i have to say that is pretty funny..but i could see my mother doing that as well haha anyway i agree with you..its dying but its not dead yet

For some reason I don't think a soccer mom oops i mean domestic engineer is a good sample population of..well...anything.

Best idea is to try them out in the store. I'm on mine all day on half brightness and my eyes are fine. I'm young and have good eyesight though :D

I think looking at any screen for too long can cause the eyes to strain.

And it just would not be a pro feature to have a display smaller than 15/17". Sometimes one really needs more than 13" and having to connect to an external display is just absurd and takes away from the mobility.

You're very rude for mocking me, I find it disrespectful. Your comment is also irrelevant since a macbook pro is marketed as a mobile device. With a smaller screen you can still take advantage of all of the pro features. Without an optical drive, your at a disadvantage when you depend on those Professional features. See the problem is that most people buy a Macbook PRO because they associate higher price with higher quality, when in reality most of these people don't really utilize these pro features. I know so many people who never use firewire, who don't depend on these graphics, who are not gamers, who are not editors, or photographers yet they buy a high end macbook pro because they think they are better off when they could've been more than good with the base model.

In other words, when you are a TRUE professional then an optical drive is a must because those other features you use manifest upon it. As a video editor I need to burn DVDs, as a photographer I like to make copies for those who I photograph or I'm interested in showing my portfolio and as a music producer I'm interested in making demos and distributing them. Not to mention the other not so PRO things like wanting to watch a movie on a plane that's not on iTUNES.

That's gonna be an awkward first day of class for that boy of yours.

lol very true. I was just kidding.

But I do have like a 2nd aunt some times removed or something like that who has 2 kids, named: Moses and Apple.

Will the new MacBook Pro take MacBook Air's form factor?

Discuss!

why? thats not even worth thinking about?

oh! you meant wedge shaped but thicker? nope still not happening

holy crap...

if these rumors are true (history had convinced me not to believe them right away), then this will be one of the best macbook(pro) updates EVER!!!
