I wonder if a company like the one that makes the Optibay will start making some kind of RAID caddy that connects multiple blade SSDs to a single SATA port, and fits in the ODD bay. That would be cool, if it's possible.

I humbly think that having an ODD right now may in fact matter to the average consumer.

I was at my local BestBuy about 2 months ago & was playing with the MBP 17" demo set when a young mother with 2 kids (I assume they are middle school kids from their height & very youthful looks) came over to check out the Macs. The mother was looking at the iMacs while the 2 kids were happily marveling at the new MBAs. :D One of them called her mom over to check out the thinness & lightness of the 11" MBA. The mom came over picked it up with a "disbelieving" look, look around the length & width of the MBA & told her kids "What? This is not a good computer, there is no CD drive! Let's look at other computers." She then lead her kids over to check out the PC notebooks without even checking the rest of the MB/MBPs! I assume that she must have thought that all Apple computers do not come with optical drives after seeing the MBA without one!

I know this is something you guys may find funny &may probably laugh at the stupidity of that mother but that is actually what really happened that day. :( I'm pretty sure that family is not the only one with such reception to the lack of optical drives in notebooks as of today, even though in time, everyone will embrace the idea of having notebooks without an optical drive. :(

I can see my mom doing this lol.

So, given this, why worry about providing a technology that's going to die soon and work on giving us what's coming now. Just like they did with Floppies.

There are plenty reasons to worry, like the DECREASE -or more importantly- STATED CAPS that ISPs in the United States are starting to implement.

Did anyone not see the spat between level 3, comcast and netflix? Do you (not you, popeye206) people really think that comcast are going to give people fat DOCSIS 3 powered pipes only for them to shut off cable and consume all their media from netflix and iTunes?

NOPE.

ISPs have had their hand in the cookie jar too long to stop before reaching the bottom of the barrel. It's only a matter of time before caps get lower and lower till we are all getting our fix via BBS (granted on SUPER FAST 10Gig Symmetrical FTTH links) with a monthly cap of twenty megabytes. Don't go over it or you'll be called a filthy pirate.

I’d think you could easily find similar stories from a few years ago about floppy drives. Change tends to take a while…

Best idea is to try them out in the store. I'm on mine all day on half brightness and my eyes are fine. I'm young and have good eyesight though :D

I think looking at any screen for too long can cause the eyes to strain.

I like the matte screen on my 08 MBP.... But the employer is only going to allow 2200 for a new MBP, so I might have to go hi Res glossy this round....

okay guys so because this is the fist time ive ever waited for a macbook release this..crazily? lol i wanted to know if they are usually like this. a bunch of rumors and then everyone gets dissapointed? i feel like there are so many rumors going around i dont know what to believe

For some reason I don't think a soccer mom oops i mean domestic engineer is a good sample population of..well...anything.

Your comment sounds fair. :) However, on the other hand, I don't think any one of us (MacRumors forum members) is a good sample population of anything. ;)

Has anyone thought of what a separate 16 GB drive would do to the filesystem? Has it been done like this before? Would a lot of folders on / just be symbolic links, or would just the user folders be on a separate disk, like on OS X Server? /Applications probably won't be on the SSD...

Seems like a strange choice. Maybe there's an OS X update waiting too..

what's your concern? Mac Pro's can handle this, my 2010 13" MBP did this fine with two drives in it, SSD + HDD. OS and applications installed on the SSD while I changed the root directory of the home folder to my HDD. Everything is automatic. Use finder, point to your SSD drive or your HDD whichever you want to go. Applications folder on the dock goes to your applications, if you go to your home folder it'll go to your home folder --> Documents, Movies, Music etc. There's nothing special to it. It's just like you had another drive, like if you plugged in an external hdd. Yes it's been done before. Not sure why you would need symbolic links etc?

These look like Macbook Specs, not MacBook Pro

There's no mention of 17" MBP. Also, no FW800, no ExpressCard which are typical on MBPs (well, maybe not on models below 17"),
Also, it mentions the white MacBook, which has no relation with the MacBook Pro.
The resolution for the MBP should be 1920x1080 at least for the 17" and hopefully for the 15" too.
How about LightPeak? The MBP should have it. I read that Intel is launching it in the next few days.
These are the reasons why I think this rumor applies to the MacBook, not the MacBook Pro.

Any comments?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

I think they should atleast put 128gb SSD so we can install all our apps. 16gb is not enough to hold much apps.

For those who say optical drives should be eliminated because the average costumer doesn't use it...think about it!..A Macbook Pro is not marketed for an average person it's intended for a professional or at least someone who demands these pro features..that doesn't sound average to me. I think average as the basic user who needs a computer for entertainment and not for some sort of production...with that being said MacBOOK air should be as it is and Macbook Pro should remain a PRO...

I can't believe this is even up for debate.

Yes, it is. Resolution isn't the only part of a monitor either. There's also the panel type. Apple uses IPS even in iPads and iPhones. That Sony's probably running some bargain bin TN panel.

The only IPS panels currently available in laptops are in the HP Elitebooks 8540w and 8740w. Apple uses a cheap e-IPS in the iPad & iPhone.

In other words, when you are a TRUE professional then an optical drive is a must because those other features you use manifest upon it. As a video editor I need to burn DVDs, as a photographer I like to make copies for those who I photograph or I'm interested in showing my portfolio and as a music producer I'm interested in making demos and distributing them. Not to mention the other not so PRO things like wanting to watch a movie on a plane that's not on iTUNES.

I find your comment offensive and narrow sighted. As an engineer, I have no need of an integrated optical disk drive. If you're saying that an engineer is not a true professional, there must be something wrong with you.

Then we have scientists, mathematicians, accountants, teachers/lecturers, and hundreds of other professions, who are unlikely to need an internal ODD. Are you saying those people aren't professionals either?

Is your idea of a professional someone with an Arts degree, and ONLY an Arts degree?

I can see my mom doing this lol.

My mother said the same thing...she's like I don't want that thin piece of isht...it has no CD drive...lol

well my mom just bought an ipod classic and she has a huge collection of CDs she wants to rip.

Also she always loves sharing pictures with my grandmother, who doesn't know how to use a computer yet she knows how to put on a dvd on a dvd player to watch them on her tv.

And I will safely say my mom represents a huge sample of what is considered an average person.

Someone is always disappointed... I remember when the 1st MBP shipped and it didn't have a built-in modem and you had some people howling because there was no wi-fi where they travel in the African savanna. It's always whining about minutia. The type of process, the level of cache, truly nerd stuff that affects .0002% of consumers.

This update looks good if its true. Looking forward to Thurs. An entry level 13" is mine if it's all real.

Yes, but a pro needs an optical drive less than a consumer. Think about it -- most of the s/w is loaded up by IT staff. When do pros actually use an optical drive. If they save stuff they email, dropbox, or route it to a corporate backup. Sending stuff to clients? Again more likely to either email or in the cloud.

I can easily do w/o an internal optical drive & use a $49 ext. when I need to load in s/w. I don't use my optical drive hardly ever and I consider myself much more of a power user than the avg consumer.

Interesting take.. but don't you think that competitive pressure to provide the access will force them to keep the access available?

Check out Sager/Clevo. Some nice bang for the buck.
I did take a look at their notebooks before the Sandy Bridge models were pulled. They even had a Core i7 2630QM + GTX 460M notebook on sale down to $899 with a 3 year warranty (labor only). It was still a little too heavy for my tastes.

I do tend to look at HP's and Lenovo's offerings now. Surprisingly, it is becoming increasingly difficult to justify a new notebook. Even with how adamant I am about the hardware specifications.

african savanna haha how often are they there. and lol as in the macrumors people

Please please PLEASE no i3 in the 13.... The graphics is going to be terrible! Not to mention no turbo boost...

No I never said that and your putting words in my mouth...but if a big portion of professionals depends on those features than yes its a must.

And also for accountants, scientists, mathematicians, they are better off with a PC...it is what it is, but a MAC feautures Aperture, LOGIC, and FiNAL Cut, I think its safe to say it's mainly marketed for those PROFESSIONALS even though it can be used for other things.

Unfortunately, that's very true. :(

However, I think that (if those rumors are true) Apple will do well to offer us the option to choose whether we want to have an optical drive or a HDD/SSD in its place for the time being. :) This should cater to the needs of most people. A win-win situation for everyone. :) Techies can have their non-optical drive equipped MBPs while soccer moms can have their optical drive equipped SSDs. :D :p

By the way, what do you guys think about the rumor saying that we will get the option to choose to have a SSD over an optical drive? I mean it doesn't talk about giving us the option to have a HDD over an optical drive (or maybe I read wrongly).... I would like to think that getting a HDD from Apple is going to cost us "significantly" less than getting a SSD from them. :( I hope Apple is not going to "scam" us with their "crazy" pricing of the SSD if we select it over the optical drive. :(
