I'm annoyed that they're not 16:9. I thought all Apples displays were 16:9 like everyone else now.
yeah, hopefully that would change in the future.

on professional machines, the squarer ratio will reign king.

I am pretty sure the world is moving to an all download based society. And everyone will need to have high speed Internet.

Therefore these mbps that will last 7-9 years for most people. The ODD will be all waste of space

I hope so. Installing from a quick usb disk (mine is the Patriot XT which has the 10.6 install as well as some Apple Service Diagnostic Images) to a quick SSD is quick and painless.

Sorry. I didn't mean to say that Air Owners don't need an external drive; that's not a call for me to make. I mean from a strictly system recovery standpoint, the only ones who don't need the ODD to perform the very basic task of reinstalling the OS are MBA owners because of their flash based software, although we could also lump in network admins who have configured netbooting for their mac clients.

Oh, sorry man. I didn't mean come across like I was refuting anything you were saying at all. Just burning time at work I guess!

What is with all the hate towards SuperDrive? None of you rip audio CD's anymore?

Ahhhh.....not in like 10 years. If you need the drive. Get it for $79 externally. Me personally I'd rather have extra storage that I'll use daily vs a odd that I used 3 to 5 times a year. I'll stuff the external suoerdrive in a drawer and pull it out when I need it.

Take out all the damn optical drive out and give us Super drive in the box. We do not need optical drive!

Great. Yet another Apple connector that will fall off my machine at the slightest bump. Display port, ditto. Power cord on my Mac mini, ditto.

Apple, I will say it again and again - I don't want a machine that doesn't have locking connectors.

Yeah.

I guess it comes down to: they can't cater to everybody's needs, all of the time. So, naturally, eventually, the optical drive will no longer be a standard component in these machines. Even the desktop machines, I reckon. That WILL suck for many of us, but it will force people to adapt to other options. Just like the floppy.

I dont think DVD/blu-ray is like the floppy at all, floppy disk is only 1.44mb and not even able to save of the jpeg files, so floppy drive is out in favour of another physical media, DVD drive. Like DVD drive replace cd drive.

And who wants to carry an external HDD with you if you could put a second HDD inside?
Does Apple include a second HDD with every notebook? No. But almost everybody needs a second HDD for backups. Only if you do online backup only, you do not need a second HDD. A
Does Apple include an ODD with every notebook? No. Not with Air, not with some models of the future MBP. Does everybody need an ODD? If you watch DVDs only on your home entertainment center, download all your software and music, you do not need an ODD. A significant number of people will need it but 'almost everybody'? No.

In short, more people need a second HDD than need an ODD. Yet Apple ships almost computers without a second HDD and only a small portion without an ODD.

No one should rely on backing up to a second HDD *INSIDE* the computer. That's nuts. If you are going to have one backup drive, it should be external so that if your computer is lost, stolen, fried, burned, etc. you have a better chance of having access to a working backup.

First of all, kindly forgive me for my stupidity & ignorance.

Wouldn't you want to do backups on a HDD to be stored elsewhere & not on the same notebook? Touch wood, but what if something bad happens to the notebook (that also holds the 2nd HDD with the backup)? Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of having backups?

I was answering a question asking why Apple would not ship an external ODD for all Macs without an internal ODD. I countered that Apple also does not ship a second HDD for Macs without a second internal HDD. The core point was not about internal vs. external, it was whether most/all users would be required to buy accessories and why Apple would not include these almost mandatory accessories. If people complain about Apple shipping Macs without any ODD, they should also complain about Apple shipping Macs without an external backup disk.

Additionally, there are lots of reasons to have a backup: user error, software error, accidental damage, theft, hardware failure.
A separate HD protects against all except naturally that it is always a bit behind if not connected permanently. A built-in HD does not protect against accidental damage and theft but is provides a more timely backup against the other risks.

I personally think when Apple decides to totally drop the optical drive, we'll definitely see 16:9 screens. Part of my reasoning is that 16:9 screens take up less width when compared to its "equivalent" sized 16:10 screens. Based on the internal hardware as it is today & with the probability of having larger & larger size batteries installed to achieve longer battery life, unless Apple drops the optical drive, there is currently no way (with the exception of shrinking the logic board) to shrink the width of the MBPs if 16:9 screens are incorporated into them, unless if you want a MBP with super huge screen bezels (for the top & bottom of the screen).

there is *no* graphics "card" involved

I unloaded my mid-2010 13" MBP this weekend in anticipation of the upcoming refresh....

I'm gob-smacked that anyone would do this - unless their laptop is merely a fashion accessory.

If you can sell it on a rumour, and be without a notebook for possibly weeks - it would seem to me that you really don't have much use for a portable.

In that case, there is some graphics card involved, although I don't know how powerful the card has to be, I've always used streetview in browser only.

No Apple laptop has a graphics card, therefore there is *no* graphics card involved.

None. Not possible. There is no graphics card on any current or recent Apple notebook.

If you need the extra hard drive, get an external drive. Me personally I rather have an integrated optical drive that i use daily vs an extra hard drive that i dont really need. I stuff my external hard drive in a drawer and pull it out if i need some old info from it.

I really hope not. 16:9 isn't good for anything except watching movies, it's way too short.

Yeah, fair enough. I see your point with regards to better physical media replacing crappier physical media. But your logic on the capicity of the floppy is flawed, in my opinion, as it's not 1992, and so on. (ie, files back then were small.) Gotta think on a longer timescale here, methinks.

I definitely feel you and others on the "bandwidth doesn't always come cheap or quickly" thing though. I recently moved out of the city (Calgary), where our connection is through a smaller ISP, and the transfer is based on line-of-sight. So, depending on the weather, etc., I get a better connection when tethering my iPhone. Also, like you've said, downloading a 8 GB game, or whathaveyou, isn't always feasible. It's easy to take for granted an ISP in a city where you can download hundred of gigs per month with no issue.
