Sounds like an awesome machine. I find it hard to believe that it will have better battery life than an iPad given the fact that it will still have a large screen and a fast processor and a conventional hard drive (along with an SSD), but if it does that would be amazing.

That's a pretty lousy res on the 13".

Sony Vaio Z can manage 1920x1080 on their 13inch model.

Heh, my eyes would go bust with that resolution on that size of screen!

As would any legit - well at least in Apples eyes - battery life due to the demand of dedicated graphics.

What dont people get about Sandy Bridge? We are all still 2 maybe 3 "updates" away from the Mac portables we all want and all deserve, for the money we pay. But guess what? In typical *** our consumers Apple style, by the time we get said notebooks they will be obsolete. Looking like my pre unibody 15" will STILL remain.

Do you guys think this is enough of a change to return my current 13" (i'm still under return policy) and get the new one?

Please give me some opinions

Yes... Go for the new one... Just back it up on an external hardrive, and return it, then you can have the new one :D

Do it man! You won't regret it. I love my macbook pro and will upgrade it in due time. But if I had the chance to return it tomorrow and pick up a shiny new model I would do it in a heartbeat.

Another guy telling you to do it! My 13" macbook pro from 2009 is being slow already! :D

The 540M has a TDP of 35W. The 525M, 6830M and 330M all have a TDP of 23-25W.

As for the graphics switching, Apple uses software based switching so it doesn't matter.

Thanks for clarifying that. Definitely prefer the 6830m in that case.. 525m is better than 330m at least but I feel they can do better.

Again with this?
Carrying an external hard drive vs an external ODD...
So if you always need the hard drive you always carry it however if you only need the ODD once in a while you only carry it once in a while...

Questions?

Sure you can say you'll never know when you need the ODD to carry it but you most probably always do need the hard drive anyway...

Anyway since Apple is supposed to offer a choice about the ODD and it doesn't really matter what we say here why don't we talk about something more interesting, like the odds of having lightpeak... :apple:
maybe you can think with another point of view, i am going to use your word and just switch it a little bit.

So if I need the extra hard drive I can carry an external one however if I need the ODD all the time then it wouldnt be very wise for me to not have an integrated optical drive

Questions?

I agree that this argument will become pointless if Apple is giving us choice anyways, hopefully it stay that way.

wow you must have hawk's eyes.

higher res + smaller screen = terrible

Open CL Support

I tried browsing all 21 pages of frothing comments but couldn't get through them all, so if this is a repost I apologize.

All Apple products for the last few release cycles have committed to Open CL support. The Sandy Bridge IGP does *not* support Open CL. Thus, it is more than likely that the 13" MBP will have something more than the integrated IGP. I can't speculate as to what it will have, but as OS X Lion will be leveraging Open CL I can't imagine a machine not supporting that tech months before the release.

That's just my 2 cents though.

But doesn't many people say the current (almost to be replaced) 13" MBPs contains the obsolete C2D CPUs & demand the latest Core i CPUs? :p At least Apple is positively responding to most people's demands by offering the latest Core i CPUs even if it is a Core i3. No? :p

I'd rather have good tech than new tech haha. I just hope that apple sees how terrible it is and gives us and i5 with and extra graphics chip, we all know they can do it, just will they.

I'm new to Macs, this will be my first. RAM easy to upgrade yourself? I'm assuming you don't pay Apple for the RAM upgrade?

I'm sure this has been mentioned / asked in this thread before, but does anyone know of a website with a technical breakdown of the new sandy core i3/5/7 mobile cpus? I'm interested in being knowledgeable about the differences ahead of the launch of the new Macbooks, regardless of what they end up containing.
Looked through the thread and did a couple google's but wasn't able to get anything that highlighted the mobile chips, only desktop.
Much appreciated!

I don't think that's true. I just think that with the Galaxy S 10.1, the TouchPad, the Flyer, and the Xoom, the right thing to do for apple is focus on the iPad in marketing. Obviously, the MBPs are important. Have you seen how many comments are on these things? :p

important to us...but to them it seems the ipad is.

I'll be the first...

Should I buy now or wait for a redesign?

jkjk, I can't wait to get the cheapest i5 15 inch.

We're most likely looking at the i3 mobile and the i5-2520m, which I think are what will be used.

Umm if the i3 in SB is anything like first gen i3 then it will smoke even the 2.66Ghz C2D as the first gen i3 @2.13 already does... the SB technology from what I can tell is pretty amazing. A buddy has an i5-2500k system built and it is amazing. Benches higher than the top i7-950 etc desktop CPU's...

Any support for QM sandy bridge?

I asked earlier, but didn't hear from anyone. Are there any rumors about the QM sandy bridge cpu's?

Without quad core, I just don't see a huge difference between my 2007 mbp 17" which I just updated with a "hybrid" drive. I can definitely see more than 8gb being a big need in the future, but the cpu's don't seem to be much different from the duo cores. On the high end mbp, if I'm spending $4k, I want quad core...

Best Apple notebook update ever, if true. Especially loving the built-in cache SSD part, higher resolution displays and reduced weight. I can't imagine people can be disappointed with such kind of upgrade. If the price point stays the same, the new MBP line would become truly uniquely distinct from all the PC offerings and in a way even more cost-efective.

Do I really need this $2,500 machine? I'm going all out at getting the 17 inch. Is it worth it? I've never owned an apple computer in my life...

All sounds good except for using Core i3 in the 13 inch which is a low end 35W chip. I just hope Apple let me upgrade to the 25 W Core i7 2649M. I hate loud fans on my laptop when I'm doing work, I'll pay for lower heat generation and quieter operation.

Well thats a loaded question. If it's going to be an email, facebook, youtube, and sykpe machine then you dont need to go all out.

Apple loves customers like you ;)

Wrong. i have the 1050 one, and its amazing for fitting a lot on the screen. And for watching YouTube in 1080p.

Are you kidding me?
LOL @ YouTube 1080p.

I can take a 480px tall image and make it 1080px tall.

Even mentioning 1080 from YouTube is a joke.
