Maybe the aluminium is too brittle on the corner? If the base metal is at fault anodising wouldn't fix it.

Anyway, I'm not sure exactly why it's chipping but it's definitely an anodised finish.

If it was painted or powder coated, damage such as this would cause flaking...

Messing up your MBP is going a bit far just to prove a point

Then I'm wondering what kind of coating is on my Aluminum ladder, because it doesn't give me black stains on my hands when I use it.

You don't rub your hands across the same area of your ladder for hours at a time. Also, if the body of the MBP was just bead blasted and left uncoated you would get polished areas over time where your hands rub.

Oxidized aluminum residue on forearms from MBP

I'm hoping to revive an old thread here.

The anodized edges to the right of my trackpad on my two-year-old MBP (a late 2008 15-inch unibody purchased in spring 2009) are worn off, and the result is a black mess on the forearm and palm of my right hand. The bad blackberry photos of the edge and the dark marks don't do either justice, but they can give you an idea.

Since I'm using my machine all the time for work and play, I had resigned myself to living with these aluminum tattoos, which used to be fairly mild. Not so anymore. Now, I look like an ink-stained wretch after just an hour of use now.

These worn edges are, indeed, where my skin/body comes most into contact with the machine, and where there is repeated motion that could add to the wear. I am right handed and I use my right hand to manipulate the trackpad. By contrast, the left side of the laptop shows only a little bit of wear at the very edge, and the resulting aluminum residue on my left forearm is faint.

I'm tired of having black ink marks all over my forearms that don't ever come fully out with scrubbing in the shower. And, really it just isn't a good look with summer sundresses.

Has anyone had any success with the nail polish application, to help limit the oxidized aluminum wearing off?

Jen.

I'm having the same problem, mostly on the right side. I am right handed, and occasionally where a watch on my left hand (not where the damage is). Either way, I usually take the watch off before using the laptop.

The damage just seems to be caused by wear from touch. I can't think of anything else. I take care of my laptop pretty well.

If you skip to 2:51 in the video with the worker turning the unibody, does yours have a metallic reflection like that? No, because it's powder coated. Also if you rewind to 1:30 you see what a solid block of aluminum looks like. Does your Macbook have striations running along the upper surface? Didn't think so either. At 2:31 in the video you see the raw aluminum which looks virtually the same as the raw aluminum in the first image I linked to, further disproving your sad attempt at discussing something you don't know anything about. If you're going to be snarky, at least be correct.

The unibody is not painted, the dull effect is created by blasting it will polymer beads.
