My '07 MBP's internal superdrive is half-dead (read-only now) so I have been carrying an external drive and have no problem at all. But... replacing the superdrive with another HD, and more memory slots? That sounds like a HP Envy running OSX to me :)

Have you tried a cheap lens cleaning disc. Most of the time that is all it takes to get it working again. Slot loading drives are dust busters.

Does anyone know why the 17 inch would be $200 cheaper then the current model?
Apple might want to make it cheaper, and so it may not have its specs bumped as much as the other models will.

My question is why are there 4 models in the space of $500 difference?

To those who speculate about new 13 and 17 inch MacBook Pro models: The new part numbers are tagged as "good", "better" and "best #1/#2". Therefore, they almost surely refer to a single size: 15 inch. Keep in mind that the current lineup of 15 inch MBPs also has four different models (2.53-2.66-2.8-3.06GHz).

I went to the apple store the other day and the sales rep seemed to see the likelihood of a release soon so that in a few months they can do the BTS ipod promo.

I love the (Really) part!

But, seriously, wasn't already like two months ago, when the inventory numbers supposedly came in at Best Buy - I think there was a supposed picture taken by one of the Best Buy employees - and the updates were imminent then?

So what happened then? We didn't get updates. So I am not holding my breathe on this one either. This getting very frustrating though.

But, April 13th might actually be a good day for release - especially if Apple is really at War on some level with Adobe.

Adobe's release of CS5 could have some thunder taken away, by a good MacBook Pro release!

Intel QC Mobile CPU's

As for the new MBPs, I wish that Apple would put out a quad-core processor based MBP. There aren't any mobile QC i7 processors, though. And there won't be until late 2011/early 2012.

Intel currently have Quad Core mobile CPU's in their line

Intel i7-720QM and i7-820QM is rather common nowadays. Hope Apple implement them in the new MBP's

At 45 W they appear to be too hot for the MBP. Sandy Bridge quad-cores will still be 45 W (note they have an integrated GPU unlike Clarksfield) so it may be at least Q1 2012 before sub-45 W quad-core mobile Intel CPUs.

But these processors aren't Arrendale. They are the 45nm higher power ones that would affect battery life more, so I doubt Apple will put any true quads in until the 32nm shrink for the Quads.

EDIT: iMacmatician beat me to it!

Thanks.

If memory serves, when they announce something that is available "today" it is already in the store rooms at the retail locations as well. When they announce that something is coming, it shows up when it shows up, but is available in stores the same day it hits the online store.

I asked a UK Apple Store employee this question and he said the last time the Macbook Pro was refreshed, the Macs were in-store the day after the announcement was made.

I completely agree… it would also provide more room for a larger battery.

"Pro" doesn't mean "professional," it means "highest-end in that line."

The Mac Pro is "pro." Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro are "pro." The MacBook Pro isn't.

Why does nobody predict July?

Hmm. I use logic PRO, and Final cut PRO on my macbook PRO. I earn my money with it, I don't use my desktop computer anymore but do everything with my macbook pro. It always works, does what I want it to do and never let me down. Doesn't that makes it pro?

With kind regards,
Bas

A rose by any other name smells just as sweet.

The Moronic Questions Post...

...from a silly newbie like myself.

Anyway, I'll just be happy for any sort of update on the MBPs, since I've been gunning for one for a while now (the parents hate anything to do with Apple, so it's a hard fight). As far as features go, I think Blu-Ray would be nifty, since there's not a Blu-Ray player to be seen at my house, but I also know it's unlikely. Either way, it'll hopefully be my first Mac.

In the interest of my ignorance, I have a few related questions...

1) Is the "back to school" deal a regular, been-around-for-years thing, or was it just this past year? I want to know if I should aim for getting it now, or closer to when college starts so I can get the special.

2) For a notebook for a design/animation student, would y'all say that a MBP is a good idea, or should I swing for another PC? I just don't know at this point, and my HP has been giving me problems for a while. And I love a challenge (learning new OS, yadda yadda).

Forgive me if I've made an inadvertent faux pas or hacked anyone off. I'm just wondering.

One thing I did just notice, No Best Buys have ANY INVENTORY in the Seattle area. NONE! I searched 10 stores within a 50 mile radius. No MPB's and No Airs. The MBP's also say not available for shipping. It's looking a bit more hopeful.

There's a reason why the Mac mini isn't called the Mac Pro. It has nothing to do with earning money.

Apple did plan on releasing them in March, that's why the Best Buy numbers were there. But the chip shortages and possibly other problems meant it was pushed back to April.

We'll see them this Tuesday.

That's true. But there is notebooks equipped with the 720 with pretty decent battery life and heat emissions. I just wish Apple gets on par with Windows based machines soon...if ever. I really love OSX but I find the performance in MBP to be kind of underwhelming. But the DC i7 should be a nice upgrade though. Anyone have any thoughts on what GPU the new MBP's might get?

Macbook Airs are the lowest selling Macbooks, I wouldn't be surprised if they end up discontinuing them.

Pure speculation, or can you provide actual data?

They've moved onto the Ipad for serious portability.

You must be joking when putting the IPad and the MBA in the same class in this way. Nothing against the iPad, but it is just a completely different category when it comes to productivity.

The NVIDIA 8600M GT (32 SP) is 22 W and the 9600M GT (32 SP) is 23 W, so going by those numbers some possibilities might be:

GT 325M (48 SP, 23 W)
GT 330M (48 SP, 23 W)
HD 5650 (400 SP, 15-19 W)
HD 5730 (400 SP, 25 W)

Using CPUs with different heat outputs compared to the Core 2 Duos could provide room for cooler or hotter GPUs.

For current 9400M models I predict Intel GMA HD, that is if they go to Core i3/i5. The 15" with 9400M might get a discrete GPU.

I've been looking at online stores and the majority of UK based places aren't selling Macbook Pros. Play, eBuyer, Amazon UK and PC World don't have them.

Although PC World does still list the basic 13" model as being the only model available (ie the higher spec 13" is unavailable), nobody else does.

Very much hoping we'll see the 13" come up as that's what I'm waiting for!

Difference this time round, the same models have appeared on more than one retailer's systems. We have Microcenter from the screen, however an employee at Comet reported them a few hours before this story broke. Also we have MR stating that they have confirmed with other sources, so hopefully if it's not the Comet source we have a minimum of 3 retailers where these models have popped up.

Stock issues:

On resellers it becoming virtually impossible to buy the 15 and 17" MBPs from the bigger companies.

The 15" MBP has completely disappeared from the websites for the 2 biggest UK retailers.

Shipping times for some of the 15" models have increased on some of the Apple online stores.

We also have the Taiwanese leak from last weekend, the Aussie Mac World source and a French article where resellers from their are claiming the 13th is the day.

Personally it wouldn't surprise me if they don't get released Tuesday, but with all is going on I expect it will be before the end of the month. We didn't have anywhere near as much noise as this 2 months back.

1) The bts thing has been going on for a while (I couldn't tell you how long, but at the very least 5 years I'd say, so it's unlikely they're not going to do it this year as well)

2) I think the MBP is a very good choice. People who work in fields related to graphic design (so anything from photographers to printmakers to animation producers) tend to like mac. I'm betting you won't be the only one in your school on a mac. Then again, asking if you'd rather take a PC on an Apple forum is bound to get you biased answers obviously. If we didn't think macs are the best solution, we wouldn't be there.

ps: It's always good to be polite, but you don't need to be so apologetic for everything, you know...

Since this is the 5000th rumor of a new mbp coming out, I guess nobody xD.
I do think it's for this month or the next, but maybe this tuesday is too early, too fast after the iPad release. Just my thought.
