1) The bts thing has been going on for a while (I couldn't tell you how long, but at the very least 5 years I'd say, so it's unlikely they're not going to do it this year as well)

2) I think the MBP is a very good choice. People who work in fields related to graphic design (so anything from photographers to printmakers to animation producers) tend to like mac. I'm betting you won't be the only one in your school on a mac. Then again, asking if you'd rather take a PC on an Apple forum is bound to get you biased answers obviously. If we didn't think macs are the best solution, we wouldn't be there.

ps: It's always good to be polite, but you don't need to be so apologetic for everything, you know...

Haha, excellent. That way I can wait til there's a free iPod to sweeten it for the folks. Mom's interested in an iPod, but only if it's free.

I'm aware that this is a mac forum, but I figured I'd ask anyway. There's a few folks that mention their PCs on here, so it's worth a shot, right?

RE: p.s: True, but it can help minimize flames/hate from other folks sometimes. But I'll work on it nonetheless.

The NVIDIA 8600M GT (32 SP) is 22 W and the 9600M GT (32 SP) is 23 W, so going by those numbers some possibilities might be:

GT 325M (48 SP, 23 W)
GT 330M (48 SP, 23 W)
HD 5650 (400 SP, 15-19 W)
HD 5730 (400 SP, 25 W)

Using CPUs with different heat outputs compared to the Core 2 Duos could provide room for cooler or hotter GPUs.

For current 9400M models I predict Intel GMA HD, that is if they go to Core i3/i5. The 15" with 9400M might get a discrete GPU.

HD 5730 would be nice, it doesn't support GDDR5 but have a higher core speed than 5750. I really want a MBP since my last computer purchase went down the drain. Got 4 replacement iMac 27" before I decided to get my money back and took the compensation. I must have loads of bad luck, 2 had cracked screens and 1 had serious yellow tinting and the last had a faulty invertor. Atm I don't have a computer as I was a little to hasty selling my MBA :)

I think the need for an Air will disappear, but not this year and not with iX about. Hard to second-guess Apple here, but it wouldn't be beyond them to make a iPad-like play in the mobile professional market. There have been rumours about Apple looking at very large touch screens, and we've already heard about smaller iPads. I bet they are at least looking at the options.

It would be cool if they turned the air into a convertible tablet. I really like having a tablet for some of my classes and it would help justify the price better.

Pure speculation, or can you provide actual data?

Just look at the dang Apple Store, the Macbook Air IS the lowest selling Macbook. I don't have anything to prove to you, so if YOU care to find out the information is true...do your own research.

You must be joking when putting the IPad and the MBA in the same class in this way. Nothing against the iPad, but it is just a completely different category when it comes to productivity.

Actually, just a misunderstanding...no I didn't mean to compare the MBP to the iPad. Being that the Macbook Pro 13" is an entry level and bottom of the line in the family of MBP is concerned, I wouldn't be surprised if they drop it completely. I am not really convinced they will, but I just wouldn't be surprised. I just meant that they are going to the iPad for portability and cheap department.

So after reading 527 posts, i thought i should share my own ideas about the 13" low/highend:

i3/i5, 4GB Ram Standard, 320/500 GB HD, integrated/dedicated GPU.

Take care:)

April 13th

I don't know why but I really feel like April 13th could be the day. I hate to say it, but I'm holding my breath.

I've been waiting since November for the update and I'm running a recently turned 4 year old Dell Inspiron (2006) that freezes when I open too many programs. Speakers no longer work, disk drive no longer works, i have a battery that doesn't hold a charge and I'm running a windows 7 release candidate that restarts my laptop every 2 hours because it's expired.

I need a new laptop and the switch over to a good mac. Please be April 13th.

Okay, okay

most of you say the MBP will be released on 13th April, but doesnt Apple present their new MBP on an event like they also did with the new Iphone software: Iphone OS 4? Or even with the aluminium macbook pro? As far as I know there is no event announced. How was it the last time as the MBP´s were released in 2009?
I thought this event thingy could be a good point provided that it was in 2009 like this :)

Has anyone else noticed bestbuy lists all the macbook pros as "Not available for shipping" except for the cheaper 13"... Specific store availability is pretty much the same.

Hey all,

Long time reader, first time poster. I'm also a student buying a first computer for school and I gotta say, I'd be pretty bummed without a 13 inch update. I think there'll be one though, even if the i3/5/7 chips don't make their stage debut in the lower end models. To all you students out there, don't fret about the processing power. Any computer with a processor speed of >2.0 GhZ and 4GB of ram is gonna be fine for what we need it: word processing, music, web browsing, etc. Even if Apple decided to put the new chips in 15 and 17 inch models, and max out C2D in the 13, I'd be happy as punch.

To those claiming Apple will drop the 13 MBP? Get real. They sell more 13 inchers than anything else in their product line.

I really, really, really hope the wait is over. Crossin my fingers on the 13th.

cheers,
-sa

I always thought that if it's just upping the hardware and specs, there's not a big hurrah about it. The iPhone OS seems like a bigger deal than just increasing the specs on their laptops. Plus, the unibodies were a fairly huge revamp, right? So it wouldn't make sense to have a single event dedicated to increased specs.

And does anybody know how it was in 2009 ? Has an event for the new MBP´s taken place or not?

Yes, it has been mentioned literally dozens of times over the past several days.

To those looking for a new 13" MacBook Pro...

It seems like many of the people wanting the 13" MacBook Pro don't really need the Pro at all. A plain, old MacBook would do just fine. In fact, if you look at the specs for the current 13" MBP and the MB you'll see they are very similar machines. The new version will be more powerful but probably not amazingly so.

If you really need power, you need the Pro but I've been using a MacBook in my work as a programmer and have found it to be acceptable. The only reason I'm upgrading to the new MBP (when they come out) is that my screen died and I am doing enough demanding stuff like simultaneously running Photoshop, Netbeans, Terminal, Mail, Safari, Firefox, Virtual Box (where I'm running Windows XP, Outlook, IE6 and Firefox), a webserver and database, Macvim, iChat, Preview and a bunch of smaller utilities, that I can justify the need. But I'm currently running all of that on a 2 year old MacBook with 2GB of RAM and it works. Not super responsive but that is more of a RAM issue and a "multiple years of cruft on the hard drive" issue than anything else. I really suspect that most users could easily get away with a MacBook with a bunch of RAM. Certainly if you find yourself thinking "Do I need the MacBook or the MacBook Pro?" you will probably be just fine with the MacBook.

Actually, no...they sell more iMacs and cheapo white Macbooks than anything else in their Mac product line. Good assumption though. If you mean MBP product line though, last time I saw numbers they sell more 15" baseline models than any other MBP.

And does anybody know how it was in 2009 ? Has an event for the new MBP´s taken place or not?

There's never an event...they announce it and then it's available. If they set themselves up for an event or announce the release date prior to availability it will hurt current sales. They just make an official announcement and they are available that day or next day.

I totally agree, 13" is perfect size for people on the move, and it's a popular format for mac. Not everyone wants to carry a 15"...

What I think is that people are selfish, if a product isn't right for them they act like it is a flop.

I do a lot of design work on large images on my macbook and I personally need the 15 inch to be able to navigate, however I DEFINITELY see the merit in the 13" line because it is so damn handy to carry around...

Anyways I have been waiting on a MBP update for quite a while like many of you. My poor little macbook is on its last leg, it has been very "loved" through the years... I almost broke down and bought a current model a few times but I would really kick myself later if I did. I hope apple gives us something soon!

It is unlikely that Apple would conduct a media event for the anticipated upgrade. It's really just a performance bump, not a major redesign.

Apple often just issues a press release and makes the new systems available for sale.

That's a great point of view, and a really realistic one. I'm sure I'll do fine with the white MacBook, as I've been doing for the last 26 months, but I've 2 reasons to upgrade:

The poor quality of the white polycarbonate enclosure, and I really need a bigger screen for video editing (just iMovie stuff, but on a 13" screen is not confortable.

yea engadget had a big story on it two days ago.

Absolutely, except for one thing: memory. Say you want to run one of the virtual machines, or, you want to do some image processing of some type, then you probably want 8 GB. Other than that, the old White Macbook is fine (maybe better even!).
