I completly agree. Im getting one for college and it would be nice to get use to it before school starts. I have a good feeling that the 13" will be updated though.

and i cant wait to have the illumitated keyboard so i can type at night, haha

I think I'm in the same boat as you guys... I'll be graduating with my Masters in May, but I'd hold out on buying one still. Historically, the iPod gets updated in October, so to push the soon to be outdated models, Apple usually runs a promotion for college students in May/June: Buy a Mac and get a free iPod (that costs 200 dollars, or get a 200 dollar credit towards a more expensive model). I have a 16GB touch and want to get a 64GB one, so I'm holding out until then and will hope the old Student ID will work. I'm hoping the 13 inch pro gets an upgrade...

Thanks for the info. Honestly, I have no data on ATI in Mac OS X. I simply haven't been impressed by any of the lousy ATI software I've been exposed to on other platforms. Nvidia on the other hand have a much better reputation in my book -- even if they have bugs (inevitable), in my view they had a good track history of dealing with the issue and providing awesome support.

If they are getting better now, then well, I'm hopeful. I do expect to dual or triple boot, so well, I do want ATI to be good across the board.
nVidia does have the better reputation for drivers, especially OpenGL ones, which is maybe why I hold them to a higher standard and am disappointed with some of the recent nVidia issues in OS X. I'm sure ATI has some too.

ATI does seem to be taking drivers a lot more seriously now, with Cat 9.2 and Cat 9.3 bringing some pretty important features such as Crossfire profiles, Mobile drivers, 3D Stereo support, and performance improvements conveniently just in time for Fermis launch. It was also a surprise that ATI was the first to release beta OpenGL 4.0 drivers given that in recent memory nVidia has always been the first to release beta and final OpenGL drivers to support new specs. I'm guessing ATI sees they have the hardware advantage with the HD5000 series and are now pushing hard on the drivers to gain as much separation from nVidia as the can while they can.

If they do offer the 200$ credit like last year, I'll just splurge and get a 15" pro. With that, the 15" would be about what I plan on spending on my 13" pro right now. I just got a new iPod for my b-day, so I could afford not to get one with my MacBook lol I really do hope they update the 13". I've read the reasons people say apple won't, but their reasons just don't seem to make fiscal sense, to me at least (I'm not saying those people who say it won't be upgraded are wrong). I read somewhere that the 13" pro is one of their best ever selling laptops.

That screenshot is indeed from Microcenter. And after doing some research further into it, and I really don't know if I should be saying much here, but I will anyway, I saw SKU's with titles that included the words MBP and 128SSD in the title. I think I also recall seeing another one with a different sized SSD in the title too. Mods, if you read this, just PM me and I'll see what proof I can get you in the next couple days. Let's just say according to what I saw, I am 100% confident that SSDs are going to be a standard and not an upgrade anymore on this MacBook Pro refresh.

Enjoy.

Oh i will **** a brick if the 13" isnt updated, ill wait till the beginning of august if i have to, but thats pushing it. as much as i love the 15" one i just dont think I'll like carrying that around, and its a little more pricey and for being in college i wanna save the most money i can. haha

Perhaps, but one cannot deny ATi's improvements this time around, I just pray ATi keeps it up from now on with new generation cards

While I acknowledge the speed benefits of SSDs, even a 128GB SSD is too small for me at least. Given that games can be 15GB a pop and the probably pretty common need to dual boot, just games, applications, and a decent sized music collection case already fill most of a SSD without anything else like videos or photos. I'd still much prefer a 500GB 7200rpm HDD. If only WDC or Hitachi would release larger 7200rpm 2.5" HDDs like 640GB or 750GB. We've been stuck at 500GB for a while, probably because everyone's too focused on SSDs.

The only good thing about SSDs being standard, it is included in the price, and if Apple were to generously offer HDD downgrade options, I'd happily move to a 7200rpm HDD and save the difference.

My sentiments exactly on the brick thing lol i agree, I think a 15" would be kind of a burden for college, but I would still rather get that than an un-updated 13" pro. All I can do at this point is hope for a 13" update and pray steve jobs knows what he is doing lol

well i keep going back and forth about the 15", i mean if they raised the price then it has to be something good, but then again idk if i wanna spend that much. because looking at the specs isnt the 15" only a 1lb heavier? idk, ill just agree with you and hope Mr. Jobs knows what hes doing so i can just get an updated 13" :)

and the the thing is ill be fine with the current 13" model, but if their gonna update it i dont wanna have an outdated one. because with my luck ill buy it and then it will be updated the next day. which almost happened 3 months ago when i almost bought one but i came across this site and it saved me :) haha

WHO REALLY CARES?

Is there anyone here who needs; who's work DEMANDS a faster MacBook Pro?
If you answered "Yes", then Apple simply isn't meeting your needs...

...Or maybe they've got you in the upgrade game of planned obsolescence.

It's not even the weight for me, I just don't want that big a computer dimension wise. I want a computer that can fit easily on a desk and doesn't block my view of the classrom/teacher lol
and I agree, y not wait for a couple months and see if a 13" update happens before I go buy an old one at full price

Well if we only bought we needed then the world would be a much more simple place. and its more of the fact that no ones wants to buy one now if the new ones are gonna come out really soon.

Yes. I do heavy duty video/film work, some of which requires working on the road. The faster the machine is the less I have to sit around waiting for it to render. A lot of professionals using the Pro line have the same requirements. Believe it or not there are people who have requirements different from your own.
Apple is not at fault for meeting demands, they can only use the fastest processors available as they come out.

Thats true about the size, never really thought about that mabe its because im so use to my 15" hp, but i do miss my 14" one, that was a lot easier to carry around. but i really do think the 13" will be updated, i mean its the best selling macbook pro.

I have it from a pretty good source on the technician side (think Genius repair manuals sent out ahead of a launch) that these are in fact the updated MBP models, and that they do not include a 13" model update.

The higher prices are due to Blu-ray reader drives (the writers add $300) for each of the 15" and 17" models. He didn't know if it was something that you could down-grade (making it cheaper) but that does seem likely from the days of SuperDrive/ComboDrive options.

Other than that, nothing super special to report - slightly longer battery life, greener technology, newer graphics cards, slightly cheaper RAM modules, etc. - no mention of USB 3.0 or FW3200.

Supposedly these will mark the start of Blu-ray options across the board, with the Mac Pros updated in April/May and the iMacs in May/June. He didn't think the Mac Mini would receive an update, just that Blu-ray would become a new option -- around the same time as the iMacs (I guess they want all the pro machines to go first).

That's what I hear, time will tell.

According to the prices on the image, only the "Macbook Pro-Good" is going up on price, and it's only by $100. Everything else is staying the same or going down.

well if they dont update the 13" but the updated 15" has blu-ray then i'll go with the 15" without a doubt

Ever think that they want you think that you need to upgrade even when you don't?

Posters, lol... Those aren't posters, they're IMPOSTORS! Now this...

...THIS IS A POSTER!

My predictions:

- Macbook/Pro refresh in May (i5/i7, no blu ray, no HDMI, ATI or Arrandale graphics only)
- Mac Pro refresh in June 2010 (gulftown xeon 6-core CPUs)
- Mac Mini & MacBook Air due Christmas 2010 (core i3/i5 CPUs)
- No iMac updates until Q1 2011

Shake hands!

That's exactly what I personally think too.

A 13" laptop is the sweetspot for many many users. Apple know that its their best selling size by some margin and to think they would update the MBP range to current processors and graphics and leave the 13" with old specs is plain crazy. I can only think the list of SKU's is incomplete or something really big is going to happen with the 13" model.

Maybe they are going to join the 13" models into just one again, personally I hope not as that brings the possibilty of plastic being the only option for a 13" apple laptop.

Also people talking about the i3 in a 13" MBP? Surely not, it would have been like them putting a celeron in the base model last summer. The i3 is the current processor for budget laptops and surely not a processor Apple would choose for its premium line.

After 5 years use out of my Powerbook G4, I don't really think that I'm part of any game of planned obsolescence. There are a number of people who have posted in a similar situation to me ;)
