You are absolutely correct! I am a photographer and have been using a laptop for years. I am looking to get my first Mac, a MBP, in the near future. I am waiting to see if I can afford whatever upgrade they come out with, or I will go with a refurbished. There is no "one" computer system that is "one size fits all" IMO, that's why they have so many options. At some point I will probably also get a desktop with a really big monitor to work on my photography, but for now, mobility and ability are the two requirements for me!

You can always add a monitor to your mbp if you don't need the additional power of a desktop. Large monitors are cheap nowadays. Great pics btw on your site. I'm always a fan of fellow midwesterners. :D

First post :)!

I was just wondering, MBP are known to be great for users who work on graphical and multimedia stuff... But is it suitable for finite element calculations? I've been using Matlab and Solid Edge and other programs which use a lot of ressources for simulations and as I'm getting tired of my PC, I was wondering if all those programs are compatible with Mac (I know Matlab is). And assuming I have to run Windows, is there a loss of performance when using Windows on a Mac?

Hey, you can use a dual boot on a mac no problem. Some friends of mine have it too (for statistical calculations) and they're very pleased with the performance. this article is pretty old: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/04/13/technology/13pogue.html

After months of speculation, it appears Apple is finally going to deliver new MacBook Pro systems to customers. The above screenshow shows part numbers that Microcenter has received for new Mac systems. We've since received independent confirmation that those part numbers are legitimate, and that we should expect new 15" and 17" MacBook Pros very soon.

While previous rumors have pinpointed April 13th as the likely day, other reports we've received are less certain of that exact date. Regardless, we feel reasonably confident that the new MacBook Pros will come very soon.

Article Link: MacBook Pro Updates Imminent (Really), Part Numbers Appear

Fantastic news...

It just dawned on me (yeah, I'm slow) that MacRumors can claim the "Really" was justified no matter what... After all, how do you quantify "imminent?" Or, "Very soon."

All relative. Since we've been waiting so long, "soon" could still be June.

we can only hope its tomorrow :)

3Mb is the best sped in my area. And in the middle of Silicon Valley. :( I can't even stream 720p, so I'd use Blu-ray
I have 8Mb/s package with Cablevision, but I've never seen downloads go any faster than 1.2 Mb/s. In fact, If I were to hit 500 Kb/s that would be pretty fast. Most of the time downloads are 150-400 Kb/s for me. Although I am able to stream 720p.
Remember the story about the little boy who cried wolf? I no longer believe any of these rumors about mbps next Tuesday. Not this month... not in May... maybe in June. It's all about the iPad. The 3G iPad has yet to ship and Apple isn't going to release new hardware that interferes with the focus on that.
And when They get updated on either april 13, 19, or 20, I'll laugh at you. If we look at history of past releases, all evidence points towards it being on those dates.
March 27, 2008 - Apple introduces iPhone OS 2.0, a week later, the iMacs are updated
March 17, 2009 - Apple introduces iPhone OS 3.0, two weeks earlier on March 3, 2009 the iMacs, Mac Pros, and Mac Mini's were updated.
April 8, 2010 - Apple introduces iPhone OS 4.0
Oh and look, the MacBook Pros and Mac Pros are due for updates.
One must look at history to infer the future.

The biggest reason for blu-ray support on the Mac is content creation. Many of us have HD camcorders and would love to create media to send to family for use in their blu-ray players. Right now, I have to reduce the resolution on all of my family videos (mostly of my newborn daughter) before I can send them out.

Yes, I can build a .mkv file for use on computers, but most of my family uses macbooks and do not have enough screen real estate to see the entire movie in all its glory.

So, the hope is that once blu-ray players are included in the hardware, the professional software will also provide the proper content creation tools. And with NAB here, the hope was for blu-ray to show up in the hardware alongside an update to Final Cut Studio.

I get what your saying. Since I work mostly with audio though I probably wouldn't want to pay the $200 premium for blu-ray because all my videos go straight to the web. I think it's great to have as an option, however an external one would be just as good for most people I think. Plus, if Google gets it's way and ISPs dramatically increase their speed then bluray may become even less relevant. Also LightPeak/USB3 SSDs in the future may decrease demand for bluray, but who knows what's going on with those standards :p

Weren't blu-ray players common in other laptops when the LAST MBP refresh hit?

Something tells me that "market share" doesn't drive Apple's plans for the future. I'm sure it is in the plans, just not the major factor. :)

I don't think they were common, no, not by a long chalk. They still aren't common, either, IMHO, judging by the mid-range. At the top end though, they are now fairly ubiquitous. I agree that Apple are at least a generation behind the curve in offering them though but that just underlines my point that they can't continue to ignore blu-ray if they want to keep their market share.

The only reason I'm contemplating a Macbook Pro is to try my hand at a bit of iphone development. If it weren't for that, I'd be going for a top end laptop like the Sony Vaio Z which provides blu-ray and Full HD in a 13" package. I don't think we're going to get that out of Apple but I'd expect it as an option at least on the 17".

Cheers,

Time tomorrow

I maybe a bit lame here and this may have been asked before countless time.

If say, tomorrow there is an update. Does anyone know based on history, what time does the store goes down?

Is it, Morning Australian Time or Morning EST, based on historic update (which I don't know)?

I would assume it would go down in the morning (how early I don't know) PST and then open back up whenever everything is ready.

Generally midnight (0000) in the local time zone.

Although I haven't really thought about Blu-ray in a couple of months, it would certainly be something I would have great use for. There is a good stack of mini DV's in my draw ready to be burned. I've got FCSP so it'll be nice to have a go at a full HD work through (albeit 1440), especially authoring a Blu-ray menu.

I assumed we hadn't got Blu-ray drives sooner due to thickness of the unit. Fingers crossed for update tomorrow, I don't know how I'm going to cope if it doesn't happen. Will have to buy 'something' to cheer myself up, maybe LOTR Blu-ray boxset.

I hate to rain on your parade, but when you configure ANY system in the Apple Store the shipping time automatically jumps to 1-3 days. That gives them time to make the custom configuration.

Don't worry, I'm new here so any new piece of information is welcome!
Thanks for sharing!

You sure you're not mixing up your bits and bytes? Broadband is generally advertised in Megabits, while file downloads are usually quantified in MegaBytes. 1byte = 8 bits.

Almost all The bestbuy's in my area are out of stock for all of them except for 2. and the 2 that are in stock are only available at the 2 our of 6 stores.

I concur. All the Florida Best Buy's are showing unavailable to ship and no local stock for any MacBook Pro model.

Long Chalk? That's a new expression for me. Where are you from...just out of curiosity.

The UK. I'll have to check my profile and put that in.

As someone else says, I think the drives were a little to big for the Macbook this time last year. Not a problem now if they can squeeze them into a Vaio Z.

Cheers,

jahman

Ah Ha! That explains it. So do you use the expression "Bob's your uncle..."? I've never really understood that one either. :)

and Fanny's your Aunt

Lets not go into the different meanings of the word Fanny (UK vs US) on here though eh. I nearly chocked on my first visit to america when I saw a sign for fanny packs:eek::eek::eek:

It has to mean something, whenever ive checked on getting a macbook Best Buy has ALWAYS had them in stock, so i think something is coming within the next few days.

What do those all mean? Is there a site like Urbandictionary for British slang?

Edit: nm, I guess urbandictionary includes British slang. The fanny pack might sell a lot better over there. ;)
